Title: net balls
Post by: joeylough on March 24, 2012, 02:19:51 PM
is it just me, or is it the case for everyone that when you bat last in the nets your ball gets taken. I seem to find that if I bat last the ball I was using is missing. which leaves me about 7-8 balls a season down.

now if o lent or used someone else's ball I would always feel the need to give it them back. not stick it in my own bag and off I go.

or is this the nature of cricket?

That is an issue with me, I take out new ball and use it but then some bowlers spot it and ask me to share, I don't know how to say no to them so I share although I want to bowl with new ball as long I can.

And when I'm batting last they throw the ball in team bags and there my money goes down the drain.

First time it happened when I bought £35 ball, argh

I'm lucky in having loads of top quality balls to use and do give away 20+ a year when they lose their shine.

Lucky enough at our club we have a bags of net balls. Most of these are old league balls and Sunday league balls. Both days we use 2 balls with saturday having 6 teams and sunday at least 2. The numbers of balls do go down due to 'youngens' wanting to take balls home, i cant understand why!!?

Good one this... I ended up with a bag of 20 odd ancient balls when discovering some old youth equipment and thought they would be good to use in nets but soon realised they ended up getting misshapen quickly and sounded odd off the bats of teammates... then I started to use old match balls but these used to get borrowed when I was batting (near the end of nets) and I'd have to make an effort to find them again which made me feel stoogish.

So, finally I started to buy new white t20 balls in England at a good price e.g. sports direct which stood out from everyone else's balls so easy to find again even if lent to teammates and a decent quality ball to use in nets. Saying that the more I lend my balls out the less time I get to bowl with a decent ball but I don't know how to say no either....

Funny-ish story about those, lad at our club bought 12 of them for £24 to keep him going, but after roughly 5 overs in nets they go like a ball that is 200 overs old, softer than butter and useful for nothing. Was funny though to see him wreck all his balls in one net session!

yes, I had some similar DF balls 2 seasons ago and they went soft big time. That's why I thought they make excellent net balls  :D

Big bone of contention, net balls.

About 2 seasons ago, my club must have had about 70 balls in a bag for everyone to use and before winter nets started that same bag had about 8 left!

Thankfully it has been replenished now and is back up to being reasonably stocked but players who hog balls in their bag make me laugh - where do they plan on using them away from the Club???

The ones with a bag full tend to be those that never train either, the numpties!

To be quite honest, I have seen the influx of 'old' cricket balls being sold on ebay of late. Got to ask the question, where have they come from!!?

Black dry wipe pen and stick your initials on the non-shiney side. I'm very anal when it comes to using my balls.

I had a bag full of 20 decent balls last season, they all went missing including the bag- wasn't happy

Over the course of a season we tend to accumulate a lot of used match balls for net use, but then this is countered by the number we seem to lose.

I also like to have a new ball in my bag most of the time so that I can have some additional practise against one and the bowlers get to work on their sharpness with the cherry.

seems like it is a problem everywhere. just seems pointless when the are just going to use it at the club anyway.

I agree with the ebay shout. there have been a number on there. many claiming to live just off the back of a cricket club.
