Title: An Enchanting Experience
Post by: mad_abt_cricket on April 01, 2012, 06:35:36 PM
Received one cleft and bat making tools package from Sam (peplow).
Already had planned to spent my one week vacation in the woods shaping this bat.

Today returned back from vacation and had a really fulfilling experience making my first  bat.

I had some difficulties working due to lack of work bench and no knowledge of using the tools and It took me some time to get used to the tools, though loved every bit of the time spent.

The binding of the handle still remains

Weight so far : 2.8
Max Edge : 25 mm
Max Spine : 75 mm

Half an inch shoulder drop.

Appreciate your feedback!

Where do you live? Canada?
Looks very gratifying and makes me think of woodwork lessons at school where I was very average so doubt I could do this successfully.. however your first effort looks great.. interesting profile.. did u have a bat shape in mind or are u experimenting?

Thank you all!

The pictures are from Romania. It is indeed a beautiful country.

I wanted to make a bat with high and long spine and with minimal concaving. Initially started with much bigger edge size but then realized that it would be too heavy.

Thank you Sam, your tools are top notch and service second to none. For sure I am looking forward to the next one but right now just want to relax and look at my first creation :)

Thanks Joe, will soon update this thread with the bat complete with handle binding and stickers. Can't wait for my personalized stickers to arrive from UK. Unfortunately have to depend on someone to deliver it to me here.

Nice effort mate, bat looks very nice..and so does the background...

I like the shape and squareish toe, was it inspired by scat?

Yes the bat is indeed inspired by Scat, I tried my best to get the balance which is immaculate in Scat.

Well you have done a very good job then :) considering its 2.8 will prolly finish at 2.10/2.11 is great for a bat that size..

The photos of you crafting the bat reminds me of some Indian factories where your legs and tummy becomes a work bench  :). You have got great skill to do it with no bench. The photos are very much inspiring. :)

Thanks.
Bat is certainly inspired from Scat, specially toe, splice and the handle.

Though there are notable differences:

Scat has thicker edges and has slight concaving, the spine in Scat is more like a  smooth arc.

The bat I shaped has a much higher spine which peaks nearer to the toe than the Scat and then has a slight slant till the handle. Edges are 5 mm thinner than Scat and no concaving.

Draw knife, two kind of spoke shaves ( rounded and plain). different grades of sandpaper, rasping tool to shape the handle and the shoulder.

whats the difference between rounded and plain?

To be honest, I didn't find any major difference, I felt a little more gap / slant in the blade of the rounded one. Most of the time I used the plain spoke shave and just adjusted the angle according to the bat slope.

Thank you

Can't really compare myself with someone working full time. It is really hard to work without a work bench as the bat rotates during the tool application.
Some videos which shows my skill gradually improved a bit as I worked on:

Having used someone elses bat with a squarish handle, I have to say that it is remarkably comfortable...

Yes, she is normally upset with the bats as they are untouchable and unreachable to her while she loves to chew wood, Salix alba is still out of her taste buds :)

Yesterday finally got the stickers from the contact. It got delayed quite a bit as Joe has delivered it to my UK contact weeks back but had to wait for it to arrive.
Over all pretty happy with the stickers. Joe's service is excellent and he patiently made iterations on my ever changing requests. I had produced him a rough draft on "Paint" and he did a really great job in terms of finishing it professionally.

Would love to hear some feedback!
