Hell of alot of wickets fallen today already. could be interesting to see how the rest of these games play out.

I see the Somerset fans are nowhere to be seen today  :-[ However I feel that could be different when Philander gets the ball in his hands

Slightly cooler, bit of rain in the last few days.  Probably amounts to slightly spicier pitches.  It is still early April after all.

im a somerset fan. tbh no one is doing well today. 2 or 3 teams bowled out for under 150 and plenty of others struggling. lancs sussex game 12 wickets already

Up here in the North-East, facing Onions on a day like this (overcast and has been raining a little) must be exceedingly difficult.  Think the only thing that's saved some batsmen is that a lot of deliveries are too good to even get edges on.

Notts all out for 161 btw.

Surrey all out for 137. Just when you though that Middlesex had thrown it all away, they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and win by 3 runs.

Just come in from a double game of skittles, thought i'd go onto the ECB website and have a look at the round up of today's play.

Pretty much, James Taylor looks to be getting some form back.
Another good innings from Trott, what more do we expect.
Ian Bell, looks to be being beaten by good bowls.
And Somerset's bowling looks a bit lifeless, even with Philander.

As a Lancs fan I'm pleased, however that Somerset attack is very young & the track seems good compared to others around at this time of year.

Would be good to get a win under our belts though.

unfortuntately. hopefully some quick wickets will help this morning. Not easy when we have a depleated attack. Mentioned about looking in the loan market. Whos good enough thats not currently getting a bowl elsewhere?

I'm hoping for quick runs before Hogg and Chapps run through your batting!

These boys have to be blooded some when, might as well be now, Thomas in India but back in a few weeks, both Overtons, Gregory and Merchede are looking like decent bets for long county careers as a minimum, add in Dibble who is also injured and a decent attack forming, Kirby a loss but Hussein not really looking good before injury so sad for him to lose the chance but we'll only see how good the attack is when Lancs bowl.

Andy Miller at Warkwickshire. Everytime he gets a chance he does well, but as soon as someone else is available Warks drop him

3 early wickets for somerset. lets hope we can finish them off quickly. we have a decent batting line up so hope we can make the most of what seems to be a decent early season pitch

well after 2 close games which were rain interupted im hoping this one isnt rained off. disappointing not to win at notts last week so good to bounce back. especially with a depleated team.
still a few games yet to kick off which isnt good. Nice the seasons here but shame its being affected so much.

another rain affected day - looks like 3 games potentially rained off with others reduced. some interesting scores aswell.

Notts finally seem to have worked out what a bat is - well except edwards! 132/1
kent 1/1 - enough said.
durham skittled out for 125 by the only fit 11 somerset can get out- Jason kerr is 12th man and hasnt played first class cricket for 10 years! somerset 0/1 from 1 ball. no durham top 5 bat has scored 50 yet this year. i believe from cricinfo that graham onions is 3rd in the batting averages at durham!

robbie joseph taken a couple of wickets with northants 99/3

worcs slow and steady against surrey 58/0.

who do we think will do well in the CC this year - both divisons? some of the top names of lancs and durham unexpectantly holding div 1 up!

Hopefully Essex do well in division 2. The bowling line up looked quite strong when I was at Chelmsford when they destroyed Gloucestershire.

Who is Jason Kerr? Is he like one of the staff at Somerset?
Why can't they also call up some of the players from the Second XI?

Worrying start for Durham this season.  Some shocking failures, but I imagine the ball is all over the place given the weather up here.  Hopefully a good performance with the ball by Onions will keep him in the England frame, and keep this game interesting.

well onions has started well. 2 for not alot.

jason kerr used to play for somerset but is now on the staff. think he is performance manager or something. Im guessing the 2nd XI have a game or are unavailable for some reason? rather than take a 2nd team player away from a game where they would get experience of playing they chose kerr. more experience playing rather than sitting watching the first team. Im only guessing tho. someone in the know maybe able to confirm.

and technically they have called up alot of players. overton twins, barrow, max waller ( more one day 1st team than CC)

be good to see essex do well.

As a slight side note, I'm watching the coverage on Sky of the Sussex Vs Lancashire game.......Bob Willis is whining away about something, I lost track of what BUT they showed his career stats and I noted that he has taken 386 County Championship wickets at 26...Great bowling average (great bowler!) but 386 doesn't seem that many to me....did he have a lot of time out with injury?

Title: Re: County championship
Post by: Red Ink Cricket on May 11, 2012, 12:46:55 PM
did it say how long that was over? is that just CC wickets or any first class wicket? i guess they played less games than they do now so that may change things.

when he was bowling didnt they have to spend 6 weeks on a boat to australia on tour? not sure boat wickets counted lol. maybe he isnt that old but he looks it.

All they said was 386 County Championship wickets at 26......

Looking at his Wiki page it says he took 899 first class wickets in total over his career

He made his debut in Aug' 1969 and retired in 1984...Thats a 15 year career which equates to roughly 30 county championship wickets a year....I suppose if he is playing for England every summer that could be the case but it does seem quite a small amount....especially for someone as good as him...
Title: Re: County championship
Post by: Buzz on May 11, 2012, 01:02:26 PM
325 test wickets, which leaves 574 first class wickets - if he took 386 county champ wickets, that leaved 188 wickets playing overseas on tours and other first class games.
Title: Re: County championship
Post by: Red Ink Cricket on May 11, 2012, 01:05:01 PM
yeah i guess thats not that good stats wise. im presuming most bowlers take between 75-100 wickets a year across all formats? maybe more? they do play a few more games nowadays so that probably helps with the tally. im sure watching the surrey vs somerset cb40 game the other day they mentioned lewis had taken 800+ cc wickets and 500+ one day wickets. although he was in the england set up he didnt play alot so maybe for those in county cricket 90% + of the time thats the kind of figures you would expect. Obviously the likes of anderson and broad will have a lot less by the time they hang up their boots.

I'm in Newcastle, and it's distinctly overcast here, and has only just stopped raining.  Could be lucky if it holds off for a while.

Surrey all out for 113, only 3 batsmen got into double figures, Pietersen with 11, Edwards with 17 and Rudolph with 68.. RHB's duck wasn't the best way for him to prove himself to the selectors..
