Title: GM Icon - Opinions
Post by: Spanky on April 23, 2012, 08:55:24 AM
Visited Morrant the weekend before last and picked up a 2lb9 GM Icon, had a lovely pick up and was generally impressed by the bats. However when looking in the Morrant catalogue it states the Icon has a hign middle.

What are peoples experiences with the Icon and it's middle placement?

I'm a opening batsman and my home pitch has normal bounce, so normally choose a mid middle. Are there any other bats you would recommend? With all the mainstream makes and small makes on here, choosing a bat has never been so hard.

Thanks

Icon is a great bat and suitable to play for play on any surface, ask Alastair Cook I was at a trade show and he came across to the GM stand from the Gray niccs stand and he loved the Icon could not get enough of it. But in all seriousness a good bat but the smaller brands are very competitive now so choose wisely!!!!

I feel my icon has a mid to low middle. just try bouncing a ball and you will get the feel for middle

Icon is a great bat. Pretty much everything in proportion. Edges are decent without being extreme. The concaving isn’t as extreme as many bats. Thanks to a slightly higher middle it picks up better than nearly anything of the same weight. The middle, thanks to a high spine and decent edges does extend down the bat. Had a 2’9 for a few weeks and it felt like a feather, now have an Icon+ as it has an even wider and longer middle. If you have any doubts and can handle a 2’11ish weight, go for a GM Icon+ as it will pickup lighter.

Not sure if Morrant allow you to tap up their bats before buying. Thanks for the imput so far. Any other bats you recommend looking at?

If they don't allow you to tap the bats, then don't waste your time in their shop. I am yet to come across a retailer who does not allow tapping the bats with a mallet. Some do create a fuss tapping with a ball as it leaves seam marks.

I recommend taking your own mallet as you would be used to the feel. Tap you current bat with the mallet to see how it responds and use the same response/feel yard stick on the shop bats before deciding. Nothing like taking your match bat along to compare.

Spanky, look at the Bradbury Players bats. They are really very nice this year. Unlike the Bradbury's from the past, have little concaving and a mid to low middle. A Bradbury Players would cost roughly £270.

GM are absolutely amazing when it comes to customer service if anything was to go wrong with the bat. Streaky is a star. And for this I would recommend GM bats and the Icon will be just fine - I have used a Icon last season on the slow and low wickets in Manchester and loved it - the most all round bat from GM - long middle.

Seem to be drawn towards the GM Icon 808, seem to be some nice bats in that range.

Have heard of Bradbury bats having weak toes. Thanks for the advice yvk3103, your Aus Gray Nicolls bat looked nice.
