Just thought of this scenario. Its a league match and the oppo are batting. Batsman strides to the crease, and you spot him using a laminate. Do you object or let ir be? Im assuming lams are not permitted in league games, correct me if im wrong
-
Why object a Laminate? Is there something wrong with them or something?
-
laminated bats are not permitted in any form of the game - the bat has to be a single piece of wood.
and the answer is, invite him to remove it from the field of play forthwith, then report it to the League at the end of the game for their sanction.
-
So laminates are multiple pieces of wood?
-
yep - usually a thin face of high grain grade A glued to a lightweight but ugly lump of wood. There are numerous threads about them on here...
-
Depends on whether we are likely to win or not
-
this is funny cos this happened on SAT! ryan was going u cant use that lad lol told umpires
umpires just said get on with it.. so im gonna buy biggest dirtest lam i can find lol
-
I'd report that to the respective League - if nothing else, the umpires need to be up to speed with the laws of the game...
-
I'd create a fuss, then every delivery whisper "cheat" during the bowlers run up, just to make sure.
-
Oooh, naughty. Here's a bigger question - is it ever acceptable to use the word cheat on the field?
-
Even bigger question.... Is it acceptable to cheat?

Depends if you have a good dentist or not...

No, but have you ever turned a blind eye? It's hard to answer no.
-
It's not winning if you have to cheat to do it

In principle I agree, and when I used to play in Yorkshire I was a committed walker, to the extent where I once walked off when there was not even an appeal because, well, I knew I'd hit it and it would not have felt right to stay.
Since moving down South, I've gone the other way to the extent that I now have to be prised from the crease with the crane. I don't want to play that way, but I've seen so many disgraceful displays of deliberate, knowing cheating that I came to the conclusion that I'd accept the umpires decisions but do nothing to help them out. Whether its the side who are heard chatting in Urdu about how noone will know if they count the ones as twos and add a few wides to the score or the batsman last season who stretched to drive a wide out swinger only for the keeper to catch it diving way down the legside who swore blind that the ball must have hit a stone, you do sometimes wonder what the point is!
-
I've never walked and in my opinion the umpire is there for a reason.
I obviously walk if I've hit it to 3rd slip lol

A clear conscience is worth it manor

If you played in Yorkshire I'm surprised you walk, no other buggers do up North lol . Level of cheating in Yorkshire is right up there with the best. We didn't have an LBW given for 6 weeks because everybody knew we were the best team in our division by miles and wanted to do anything they could to stop us.
Go as far as saying I've found the opposite, guys in the South walk more often. I also think the higher the level of cricket you play the more common sense (and neutral umpires) come into play.

Was a little bit upset as i was bowling at the time and could just imagine the ball disappearing out of the ground

I suspect for both of us its a chronology thing - I played there years ago, as you did here, and behaviour has got worse in both. I'd still say that the conduct was better up North on the whole though!
-

I wish I were still convinced by that!

Sounded righteous... Haha

I mentioned the standard of cricket for a reason. I played a higher overall standard in the South compared to the Village stuff in the North. My team are a very talented bunch of proper serious cricketers working our way up the league but some oppo teams are a bit clueless and crap, bordering on footy yobs at times imho. Always seems to be the remote villages outside the major towns!

Hmmm...factual similarities exist, in that I played a lot higher standard when I was younger up North!
-
Having only really played in the South I couldn't compare however I generally find people in the league I play (Middlesex) in will not walk....to the point that sometimes even with a blatant edge to the keeper a batsman will stand his ground and wait until the finger goes up. Personally I don't agree with it and will always walk if I feel I've made contact, there's been a couple where I'm not always sure so I'll stand my ground and see what the ump says.

You're playing in the Middlesex Cheationship then? :D

I had a similar thing when an opposition player seemed to be using a graphite Kahuna. Not sure of it's legitimacy I didn't say anything, was out for about 20 anyway.
If I knew someone was using a laminate I would consult the umpire and ask them to look at the bat. It would be their judgement then.
-
i played a season in australia and cant remember one instance of a player walking, one or 2 still stood when the ball went to first slip. also saw a fair few players still using the carbon backed kahuna which im pretty sure was outlawed a fair while back
-
Personally I always walk if i Know ive hit it, as i know how frustrating it is as a bowler to have someone not walk.
Worst one ive had is someone that got a thin edge to the keeper and was given out by the umpire, He then refused to leave the pitch saying he hadn't touched it and the umpiring was a "complete joke" after a while we couldn't be bothered to argue and carried on but his stumps were shattered 2 balls later so it worked out. >:(
-
Haha! I am indeed Manormanic.... I've played in some games where some of the deicions have been bordering on the hilarious.

Yeah, it does have a bit of a reputation - we merged with another club about seven years ago and they were positively ecstatic to be leaving that league!

im in middx championship and the behaviour of some teams is an absolute disgrace
for 1st 11 cricket in div 1 there are neutral umpires which has helped a lot.
div 1 2nd 11 no neutral umpires
im looking to play elsewhere ive got so sick of it.
dont know what the answer is but it's got very bad indeed
-
Last season in the hertfordshire league one of our players was given out for nicking it behind by a league approved umpire. i was batting at the other end and he did not touch it. batsman wasnt too pleased. moaned for abit and the keeper and slips started mouthing off. as the batsman walked off the opposition huddled up and the skipper called him back. thought that was refreshing to see
-
we've done that when it's blatantly not out ie. lbw given and he smashed the cover off it - we aren't that desperate to win. Alot of other teams will do anything to win, most of the time to cover up their own inadequacies, that's what disappoints me.
-
Just goes to show the convicts were all left over there and all the honest guys sent over here ;)

Get out! I rarely slate other leagues/clubs etc, but the Championship is a really poor place to play!

I'm starting to notice this Motormanic......watching a lad at point claim a low catch that never carried in a million a couple of years back was probably the most galling moment i've had on a cricket field. I clearly saw it bounce in front of him but he got up, launched the ball into the air started celebrating and becase of this the ump gave me out.... I'm not proud of this but I had a couple of choice words with him when leaving the field (the only time I've ever exchanged views with an oppo player not in jest). Shocking sportsmanship.
