Title: How to choose your bat...?
Post by: tim2000s on April 26, 2012, 01:13:31 PM
After a couple of questions from members about bat shapes and sizes, I thought it might be of benefit to create a topic where people can provide advice as to their experiences of bat types.

Having tried many different bats, I definitely have my favourite middle position, blade length, etc, but how do I choose between bats and what's the best thing to use?

As I recently posted, I've decided that my T20 bat is going to be the new Laver that I acquired as it's a monster, but that means that I no longer need my Lekka Big Hitter, a bat that is designed for the format. How did I come to this deecision?

Once all the factors of budget, weight and pick-up have been taken into account, for me it is about nets.... I've used both the above in the nets and both allow me to spank the ball hard, but the Laver gave me that extra bit of confidence and assuredness. Likewise, my top bats all have the same characteristics. When I've used them I feel confident with them, whereas the ones that I don't use just feel a bit flaccid in my hands.

How do you do it?

Now then, are you talking about which of your bats to choose, or which bat to choose before you purchase?

With a new purchase you don't have the luxury of a few nets. And if it's for bats you already own, the unfortunately I've never really been in the position to choose between many :(

Well here is the question...

For me it's which to choose to get rid of, but if it's before you buy, and it's bigger brands, can you borrow from a friend in the nets to try out a style of bat that you are looking at?

carry four or five to each match with me, look at the pitch, assume a nice thoughtful pose...

...the guess...

...then call for the B52 thats falling to pieces after about ten minutes, most of my team mates would point out!

Back in the day I'd go into the shop and cosmetics (stickers and willow) probably got me to make an initial selection of half a dozen bats, and then after that I'd decide which one I preferred the pick up of.

Back then I didn't give much consideration to shapes and middle positions and whether or not a bat suited my game. I'd use a bat for maybe a season, and if I wasn't getting on with it, flog it and get another.

Then I went custom. I had a few ideas about what I wanted, the batmaker in question bounced around a few ideas and I ended up with an awesome bat - now I just ask for custom bats based on that spec, or maybe buy from here if the bat fits that spec.

I basically always bought bats based on how they felt in the shop. I rarely got it wrong. If I could go back to that level of naivety I would like a shot! I think nowadays I complicate things too much! Too much knowledge isn't necessarily a good thing!

Best bat I have used was a Mjolnir so I tend to go for a traditional profile but that's about it really, I don't change bats based on the game format or the conditions (unless it's sopping wet in which case a cheaper bat comes out of the bag!)  and I just aim to have something that is nice and forgiving...

Choosing the right bat can be a case of the least bad bat in a shop or trying to pick out what is the same bat from a dazzling array of choice, either way the main ingredient for anyone on this forum is buying into the belief that it will score you runs.
