Title: Is it worth repairing a damaged toe?
Post by: praguetaz on May 01, 2012, 07:07:42 PM
This is a simple one I hope...

My beloved number one choice bat of the season - a Woodstock Curve Platinum XL with a fantastic middle got damaged in nets last week and I'm gutted.. it's the outside toe and it hasn't quite gone all the way through... the quandry is that i'm in Prague and have a quote of 25-30 to repair from John Newsome and 24 pound postage back.. assuming it'll cost me perhaps a little more to send from here that's virtually 75 odd pounds for a professional repair.. is it worth it based on your own experiences? Did the repair last? OR should I get someone here to do the best job they can and glue and tape it up?

P.s. sent an e-mail and photos to batrepair.com yesterday and a bump today but no response yet....where are you??? Ok.., just heard from Dom in the last few minutes and he recommended sending it to John....

I think you should have a go at repairing it yourself, pva wood glue and some tape and away you go.
if you have a drill,  a vice and some hardwood dowling, about 5mm, you could even pin it too...

The gentleman I bought it from advised never using wood glue but super glue!... Interesting...I was thinking of doing the repair myself with the super glue but need a vice and some cloth repair tape from Salix but unfortunately they aren't too quick with e-mail order replies either...it's been at least 4 or 5 days...

I'll send u the photos via e-mail for a quote and your first impressions... thanks for the offer.. The thing about sending to John is that I'll hopefully get the new stickers too but the photos are on the way...

If you're 100% confident you can do a good job then do it! If not, send it back to John and get a full refurb, it will be like you've got a new bat

Looks pretty nasty that. It would possibly need a dowel in it to really sure it up.

Do dowels affect the bat in any way e.g. add a bit of weight to the toe? Does anyone currently use a bat with a dowel in the toe? How long has it lasted?

It wont really effect the weight,  I have 2 dowels in one of my bats, its fine. Like all repairs like this, its hard to say, sometimes they last a season, sometimes a few weeks!!! Best bet is if its done well it should last a long time.

good luck
Ross

got to agree with ross on this. the wood you remove to fit the dowel is probably about the same as the dowels. wouldnt be noticeable anyway. they can be a very useful repair to keep a bat going but again as ross said they can prolong the life or of a bat for ages or only a few weeks. i would suggest no driving of yorkers for a while anyway

75 pounds, I personally would have a crack at fixing it myself, and i don't think superglue is right might be too brittle (not sure correct me if i'm wrong), glue it up, clamp and vice it, grab some dowell, drill a hole or 2 glue, shove the dowell in and good to go?! ;)
But it depends on  the bat and what it is worth if its like 300 pounds and reasonably new get it fixed professionally

I'd chop about 6 inch off...fits in the bit a little better then lol

but seriously its a bad one that is. you could dowel it but as its about half of the way through the wide of the blade, wouldn't think it would last that long even if its pinned. if you used a hard wood dowel then it would be slightly heavier than the willow removed but not noticeable.

love to see what its like once dean's had a crack at it (pardon to pun)

Well it's on it's way to Dean and I'm sure he'll do the best he can.. it'll certainly be a challenge. It's the best bat I've owned so far in terms of pick-up, weight and how it feels off the middle both with bola and real cricket balls. Even if it doesn't last the season which I hope it does and beyond, I think it's worth a go repairing so thanks again to Dean at Vulcan and everyone on the forum for their advice. Will post photos on return so you can admire his work.

My match bat had a dowel in it all last season and scored me 800+ runs so will def keep your bat alive and performing

Sadly I don't think that will last even with a dowel or 2, you would be better off fitting an inch deep toe insert than a dowel and giving it the GN resin toe wrap which looks dreadful but might be the only way to hold it together. If you just glue and dowel you might find that it breaks again first time out and that would be a waste of your money and Vulcan's time.

Well.. I received my bat back from Dean at Vulcan today and it is a thing of beauty with his custom stickers. You'll find photos of the repair so I'm hoping the glue and tape will do the job for the rest of this season and beyond...
Once again thanks to Dean for his comms and customer service as well as doing the work for free as I know he's a busy man.. a true gentleman...

You can see the before and after pics and I'll be taking the bat to show off in nets tomorrow...
