Hello all,
My flatmate has just purchased a Gray Nicolls Quantum Carbo. 14 Grains, 5 of heartwood and an absolute beaut...but I digress! I have noticed in 3 recent GN's I have handled (including this once) that the blade feels slightly wider than an ordinary bat. On inspection and comparison with my Woodstock it isn't wider at all but it felt so to me. I put this down to the face being flat rather than slightly convex.
So my questions to you all are:
1) Are the faces of recent GM's unusually 'flat' or is this just my imagination?
and
2) If it is the 'flat' face which is making the bat feel particularly wide, would the process of making it so be something a small British bat maker would be able to do? i.e is it just a case of planing the face down or would it require some special tools?
Thanks,
Will

The face of the blade is dependant on the type of press used.....
So if you wanted a bat with a flat face you would need to use a bat maker who has the use of a flat faced press

Of which there are a few in the UK - GN in the UK have one, as do Charlie French, SAF and a few others.
I really like the flat face on the bat - I have found it helps control the slightly off centre shots (in the nets anyway!)
Here is a slight comparison of a flat face bat and a traditional faced bat (flat faced one from Blank Bats and the normal one from Talisman)

I will end up being caught in the gully more often rather than at first or second slip. !!

I have a GN Evo Carbo which is also flat-faced. I haven't used it much yet as it's not knocked in, but the flat face does take some getting used to.
I have a tendency to open the face to over-pitched stuff and drive square, so I'm hoping that will work out ok!
