Title: Bat Help!
Post by: Elsi on May 29, 2012, 03:37:46 PM
I bought a GUNN & MOORE bat off a member of this forum back in February and the bat was brand new when I received it and it still looks brand new!!

However, the bat developed a big crack after I went after a short ball in last week’s net session and it’s totally fudged! The crack has gone right through the edge to the splice of the bat!

The bat has only been used in 7 net sessions and like I mentioned above, it still looks in top condition.

Can I ask someone to upload the pictures on my behalf as I can’t access a photo uploading site whilst in work.

Also, I just wanted to know where I stand. Have tried to contact the member through the website but the user hasn’t been online for the past week!

Have managed to contact GM but they say it’s a matter between me and the seller.

Thanks guys.

Iwan

I would imagine unless the bat is a under a year old then there is no warranty, As for it being between you and the seller then unfortunately the seller isnt responsible as he has sold the bat and as we all know bats are natural products which can break at any time.

Sorry to hear you've had some bad luck though,

if you have done all YOU can to knock the bat yourself even if it says pre-prepared on it
send it back to GM with a nice polite letter, and I cant stress nice and polite enough here.
They will have a look at it for you. They may replace it they may not.

But it's worth it.
My mate had a hero GM le split 1st time in nets and GM customer service sorted him out with another bat.
The larger companies are generally quite good with this sort of thing.Newbery prob the best of the lot in my experience
good luck

I've knocked it in also!

I've spoken to GM and they don't want nothing to do with it I'm afraid!

I think it is better to buy from authorised retailers and if there is problem with the bat, you need to contact the retailer u have bought from and they will then sort out everything for you

If I were you, i'll contact the seller

Tbh the best course of action would have been for the seller (assuming her had bought it from a shop) to act as if he was returning it to GM (i.e. as GM would honour his rights as he was the direct purchaser) though without any refund to you or acceptance of any responsibility.

By all means contact the seller to see if there's anything he can do to provide a receipt or help with the above suggestion (though I fear it may be too late) whatever, but there's nothing he's liable for, unless he knew about the problem in the wood or was acting dishonestly (which doesn't sounds as if it's the case tbf)

Out of interest, was it an Apex? What model?

That kind of damage looks like storm damage to the willow, which unfortunately doesn't show until you use it. The batmakers generally don't carry the warranty over to a secondhand buyer as they can't guarantee the bat is brand new.

I don't think there is a lot you can do.

Ooof!

That's probably the one thing that makes me cross about GM - their bats aren't and simply cannot be 'ready to play'. It's disinginuous and a crude marketing ploy.

I think the GM people would recognise this as a faulty willow. If the guy you bought it from has a receipt / email invoice it could help a lot in getting it replaced.

Dude, I'm sorry that I'm a chap of virtually no influence in this market, and too poor to sub you in a benevolent way.  Someone should surely do something about this?  You would think GM would at least take it in and look at it.  If they can verify it was definitely made by them and has hardly been used I would expect them to replace it too.  Good luck.

looks like a fault that can happen when splicing. i remember seeing someone elses bat on here ages ago that had a similar thing. Brendan mccullums also went like that on an international game on tv. Id speak to GM on here as suggested. just see if they can do anything. they should be able to tell they made it and thats its had little use. its not like its a model from 10 years ago.

I wouldn't replace it, if I were GM. Your contract is only with the seller. Not the manufacturer. A standard warranty also only covers 1yr. The Apex is an old bat, this may be past that.

If you/the seller has a receipt from the original retailer - then it should be returned through them. And will probably be replaced.

I suppose that stance is fair enough, but most punters will only suffer an experience like that with a manufacturer once.  Plenty of competition out there for your money, would convince me to spend it on another manufacturer's product if it were me, and frankly it doesn't inspire confidence in their (admittedly CNC) workmanship and such like.

Here's a question for the batmakers out there, could this frailty have been detected if the bat were handmade rather than by a CNC?

It would be interesting to discover what the reaction would be if this had happened to a pro's bat - while being used by another pro.

they would just get them replaced.pro's using certain manufacturer's equipment is big business.
i'm pretty sure a letter to gm with the bat to someone up top would solve this problem.
If it did'nt as has been said vote with your feet, use another brand and put it down to experience.
There are loads of small custom batmakers where you can get a better quality bat than the mass market ones for the same or less money.
We are a funny bunch us cricketers, sometimes we do want a certain brand for no logical reason.I have only used about a third of the bats ive actually had in my possesion.
I would guess im not alone on this forum for that thou.... :)

Send the bat back to GM with an explanation attached. If they send you a new one then happy days, if not then you will have to find an alternative option. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Potentially. But seeing as GM use hand finishing, it also would've been spotted there.

In the future just buy from a supplier who is approved by the brand. This would have been covered by them.

You take a risk buying cheap bats off here and off private eBay sellers. This one didn't pay off. There's a reason why retailers are more expensive.

As Tom says, you buy off the internet and through the forum from Private Sellers at your own risk. There is unlikely to be any recourse if the bat breaks through either, especially if it is not that recent... But prices reflect that.

This is unfortunately one of those occasions where a flaw wasn't picked up (which believe it or not does happen) and unfortunately you were on the wrong side of it. What I'd suggest you do is communicate with the seller and see if they can get it taken back with their vendor, assuming they have a receipt.

Otherwise I'm not sure what you can do...

it might have been a bad ball (not bowlers fault but a bad ball that can damage the bat especially if it is quite new. Sorry to hear about the bat tho, does look very nice bat shame about the accident.
