Thats quite unbelievable! In our league(middx) you cannot pay anyone i think the suits on the committee might be keeping a close eye on this!! Sometimes we do get pros in the league but normally ex first class or youngsters registered with middlesex.

It's a pretty hard thing to prove that you are paying a pro. Pretty easy to hide as the league usually do not have the right to look into the clubs accounts and even if they did, it's not hard to fiddle. Our club haven't (as we basically can't afford it) but teams in the league who are paying do it without much worry, as even though it is against the rules, how can it be proven???

Yeah a club very near me (which I shall leave unnamed) pays their 1st XI under the cover of 'travelling costs'. Hate how they get away with it, probably more in jealousy since our club's finances are looking dire at the moment :S

A club in Scotland (the now sadly defunct Perth) once had Gilchrist and Langer as their 1st and 2nd team overseas players, the story goes that Gilly was in the 1sts and couldn't hit the ball of the square all season while Langer was blasting a ton ever week but they weren't allowed to swap them over.

Ditto, despite the Wetherby League being completely amateur one club is known to pay most of their 1st XI. However, unless somebody makes a complaint or signs a statement nothing can be done unless the club is caught handing over cash.

Best overseas I have ever seen was a big Indian bloke named Surrindar Dos. Only bloke I've ever seen hit a double hundred in league cricket and apparently he hit 3 in one season once. Back when it was a bit easier for clubs to sign them, but he was mustard!!!

Ijaz Ahmed and Clayton Lambert were both pretty superb to watch mash us all around the park, and I got to play with a very young Mark Boucher which was cool.

Played against Alvin Kallacharan in the league last year, he was fairly good for a 60 year old!

My old club had Matt Sinclair one year - he scored 500 runs in his first 3 knocks, including 2 double tons and a century. Was going to smash the league record to pieces, but them got I'll and missed half the season

Played against a decent overseas player last weekend. Suleman / Sulaman Qadir, bowled decent spin. Heard his father was quite useful as a player  ;)

Have played against Craig McMillan who was a pro over here (NI) for the 2010 season and scored over 1000 runs at over 60.

Also in 2003 another pro scored successive double hundreds and averaged 127 before being called away for the SA U19's. Who? AB De Villiers
