Title: The worst thing about playing cricket in these conditions is...
Post by: tim2000s on July 16, 2012, 11:47:50 AM
The inability of the batsmen, bowlers and fielders to remain upright and instead sliding all over the place. And with the ball not travelling across the outfield, having to stop and turn when running more than one is a nightmare...

The last game I played two weeks ago, we ran a three, which meant I had to throw the anchor twice to turn around.
NOT IDEAL

I'm thinking of buying soccer boots with the blade things on the bottom for fielding

The worst thing about playing cricket in these conditions is............

Bowling left arm spin and barely getting a ball to turn off the straight for the entire season up to now due to sodden pitches and groundsmen doing their utmost to get two games out of one pitch so leaving far too much grass on the tracks..

Oh, and spending your entire time in the field cold, wet and miserable and wishing you were somewhere else...like indoors....warm....with beer.

Try bowling leg spin with a ball that resembles a bar of soap :(

absolute bunch of pussies.

When I started playing we played on this stuff nearly every week. No covers, no global warming, just hard work. So what if you can't play on a billiard table of an outfield and a straw coloured bone dry deck. It's about time the bowlers had something in their favour.  Just wear some proper studs and stick some sawdust down. If you still can't stand up try bowling slower and using the old english virtue of line and length. It's underrated you know, especially on greentops. Batsman whine whenever a ball moves a mm in any direction because all use big bats they can't lift. No point having a 3lb bat when you can't lay it on the ball.

You don't know your born  :D

Trying batting on the bloody pitches!

I was chasing after a ball yesterday, stopped it, turned threw it and in the same motion slipped on the wet outfield and twisted my knee... Opening the batting was difficult, although I didn't last long and got bowled by a ball that pitched on a length a grubbed along the ground

Keeping. cold wet, shocking 2 paced carry. bowlers throwing down a bar of soap which can go anywhere and having to dive around trying to stop it!

and forget playing altogether- the worst thing about these conditions is umpiring under 13s matches in the rain!

what a girl  :D

I bowl left arm spin - 58.3-16-83-15 this season in the league and cup. I'm praying for more rain. Rained midway through our game saturday and the thing was bouncing and turning a treat.

Haha, I've had some tap this year!
Pitches not turning/being soaking wet/outfield soaking wet/ball being soaking wet.

All my excuses for bowling like a (No Swearing Please) :)

At my age I'm using the word 'run' in its vaguest sense, but on these cloggy outfields I've nearly 'run' out of my spikes a couple of times going after the ball!

The only wickets I've taken this season are ones that have drifted in then seamed in as well! The keeper thought I'd perfected my carrom ball... :D

Most of our guy's joy has been had bowling wicket to wicket and letting the very dodgy bounce take its toll... Course, if they could only get the length right consistently they'd be getting even more joy...

Worst thing about playing in these conditions is the weekly battle to get the whites back to being vaguely white again after every match.  My cap is even properly muddy, after a dive and flick back on the boundary at Shenley Village saw me catapult over the boundary and head first straight into a puddle.  Was the second over of the game as well, so I had to field for another 51 overs absolutely covered in mud.

Nice! The second innings of last weeks T20 was played on an outfield with puddles as we had to finish the game. The opposition got increasingly wet and unhappy as the game went on, not to mention cold as a chill wind followed the torrential 20 minute downpour in the break between innings!

played in April when the temperature was 4c in a gale on top of a hill at Whixley in driving rain/hale. Got the game finished no problems, though the frostbite caused a few people concern.

Tim, never gets below 10c in London. Manup.

The worst thing...... Is not actually playing and dropping points against teams you should beat

Not sure what you're fussing over to be honest, I bowl SLA and I'm on 120-18-364-23, including 12-0-33-0 yesterday that was almost literally turning square, beat the bat more than 3 times in every over! I'm loving it, my arm ball is even more deadly now that it kicks on a little after pitching, even coming back in to the batsman!

the worst thing is not playing and seeing your rivals play and pick up points. In our Division, one team has managed to play nearly every single game. They've got 18 points while we get 6 points for those games. We are 16 points behind them having soundly thrashed them.

Agree, but it also requires the right pace to bowl at. Seen alot of spinners bowl too slow on wet decks and get picked off by the ball sitting up. If you can tweak it a little at a decent pace, then these wet skiddy decks are ideal. Im almost bowling leg cutters rather than spinning it. When the decks firm up I'll have drop it a little more on the track and try to slow it down a touch.

I hate not being able to play and net consistently... I honestly don't think the decks are that bad to bat on, I have found the ball seems to be swinging more this season tho

if the deck is good when dry then they tend to be ok when wet. a few we have played on were absolute minefields. poor tracks when wet can be horrific

I think the problem is more for the groundstaff. The squares are getting ripped to shreds with use.

Pretty much agree totally! Bowling flat and pushing the ball through just doesn't come naturally to me...guess that's why I'm struggling...

What I've been seeing is that the naturally quicker bowlers have been struggling a bit - maybe because they usually bowl just back of a length and also get a bit more bounce? The slower bowlers are tending to benefit more from balls that keep low - and I mean as low as a rattlesnake with a belly full of buckshot...
