Hi lads just wondering what has been or is your favourite gray nicolls bat. For me it has to be the old shape powerbow pro
-
Millennium that I used to borrow off a lad at the club, scored a few 50's with it
-
I liked the Sabre that Nasser Hussain used around 1998 that was covered in tape...
-
Old Powerbow for me :)
-
I also have a nitro carbo and is very nicely balanced and pings like a god but my old powerbow was doubtedly the best bat I've had :)
-
Millennium i had was superb still got i think it in the loft although completely wrecked and the scoop for me was a big favourite so cant split them.
-
The last GN I had was a Millennium, it was a beast despite being a KW Harrow bat!
-
My first ever bat was a GN Crusader Powerline some 30 years ago...does anyone remember those?
-
At the Cricket Club I play for, we have one of Dean Cosker's old Powerbow, used it in the nets a couple of times, its an absolute beast!
-
Excalibur, I grew up watching Atherton so I saw quite alot of that bat lol
-
Its all about 2009 model Powerbow :D
-
3*, hey CD?
-
The one that Michael Slater used , Excalibur/ Scimitar ?
-
Never used a GN but used to love the look of Robin Smiths Powerspot/Giant
-
Wasn't it an Elite?
-
Gladius
-
Think Robin Smith used an Elite later on
-
Fair do. Renegade on here had some tasty XXXs from Muelemans too
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=2366.msg26100#msg26100
-
Nitro for me, had my current match bat made up in that shape
-
Dynadrive all the way.
-
Scimitar I had was unreal, also had a couple of very nice sabres
-
A massive megadrive. Under-rated bat as it looked crap, but I had a carbo scimitar break and they sent a pro-performance mega back, gave it a go and never looked back!
-
Great topic! My first Gray Nics was an Ultimate 750, size 6. Was awesome. Also owned a very nice powerspot, a Lara 375 Scoop and I still have my dad's old scoop too.
If I was buying one today I think a Scoop would be my first choice
-

Mega drive or mega power? I don't remember the mega drive in the UK.
-
Thanks jhonny and I wish they still had pro performance instead of ltd edition as a lot of company's use ltd edition
-
Elite LE and Ultimate 1000 LE were the 2 best bats I have ever owned
-
Dynadrive for me....I will definitely be buying the sexiest Dynadrive I can find when they re-release them next season....
On a side note, I get so confused with the labelling nowadays...What the hell are the different grades within each range? Which are the best ones and the worst ones? Is it 3*, 5*, Extreme, Performance, pro performance....I'm lost! Will someone please explain it to me? I keep seeing bats on eBay but I have no idea whether they are midrange, bottom range or top of the range..! Too confusing!
-
Dynadrive for me, only ever borrowed one for a few games but it was a beauty of a bat. It's a toss up between that and a L&W for me next season.
-
Gray Nicolls Longbow 4* with the cloth facing. Bought for £35 and is an absolute gun.
-
I think I had actual sex with my Xiphos once, but i'm not sure.
-
I've never actually owned a GN bat. Always wanted one but for some reason never got round to buying one. Used a heavy Fearnley VR5* for years, then forgot to take it to a match. I borrowed a team mates crappy GN World Cup which was like a twig. Scored my first 100 with it. Makes me think why have I still not go one. Love the look of the new classical retro bats. Reminds me of the GN's I used to watch my dad use to smash bowlers all round the park with when I was a kid.
-
My old Predator 5 star, got it for £90, best bat I've ever had was an absolute gun until the face literally fell off it
-
Mega drive or mega power? I don't remember the mega drive in the UK.
The megapower was a 80s bat with two low scoops like the Sabre a few years later.
The megadrive was a late 90s bat, with a number of long grooves in the back
http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews69455.html#MediaGallery
-
For me, it would be a toss up between a couple of dynadrives, especially one with a super short handle, and a scoop, also SSH from 1983. I've still got a scimitar that i got about 10 years ago, knocked it in and used in winter nets, but never really used in matches.
-
I think I had actual sex with my Xiphos once, but i'm not sure.
Perhaps it was the other way around mate ;)
Was it a 'players' edition??? :D
-
kids!
The Ultimate, obviously! :)
-
Cant remember what it was called but it had 4 scoops on it - circa early 80's (David Gower used one), scored my first ever 50 with it.

I know the megapower well. That's why I asked the question. Been trying to find one on ebay for an age, unsuccessfully.

GN500 Pro-Balanced
-
Some favourites - the old Elite that Robin SMith used when I was a kid. They were mint!
Of ones I've owned, the original Powerbow was classic (and actually had a powerful bow, unlike the odd shapes they've used to keep the name alive in recent years) and I really liked the response I got from a Phoenix - the flat face was quite odd but once you got used to it, I found I had more control than with any other bats I've used.
-

It was this one: http://assets.reviewcentre.com/cms//images/390/197/item69455-jpg-1.jpg
The one with loads of little cut outs. Profile was massive, but I supose when you whip out half the middle, you can make it as big as you want!
-
and the little cut outs used to get so much crap in them!
-
i used to love the "excalibur" and sabre but very tempted to buy a dynadrive :D
-
My favourite from what I've used, borrowed has to be the old GN Powerbow. Up to when they changed it around 2005 I think it was. Massive profile and I never came across one that didn't fly. Used to hate seeing batters walk out to the middle with on of those bats haha
-
My GN nitro extreme from a couple of years ago. weighs 3lb bit picks up like a 2.12. The middle is a beast. Just a standard forward defence often rushes back past the bowler at a rapid rate of knots!
-
The Powerspot and original Scoop bring back fond memories for me, though I was always more of a Kookaburra man back in the day.
-
Oh dear, confession time - GN never really 'did it' for me.
-
I am a fond admirer of the older Powerbow, like many on here!
Also love the Longbow as it is traditional with a long middle.
Quite looking forward to the new Dynadrive too 8)
-
Oh dear, confession time - GN never really 'did it' for me.
When I was a kid lots and lots of years ago GN was "The Only" bat to own if you wanted to be one of the cool kids
-
Ha ha - I was never cool!
-
We had two sports shops when I was starting to buy cricket bats, 25 odd years ago. One sold GN and SS (Stuart Surridge - they had Contours, Jumbos and Turbos, all of which were expensive bats) and the other was GM and Slazenger.
What I remember was that they all seemed really expensive and I ended up with firstly a decidedly rubbish GN Powerspot Tufcoat and then a Slazenger V12 Super Polyarmour which was a lot better, but I was buying to a budget!!! I was always jealous of my mate's GN Twin Scoop and then his Dynadrive, which was an absolute beauty...
-
I can remember back before that, there was a fad for some bats to be 'dipped' (I presume) in some sort of white jollop so you couldn't see the grains at all. I presume it was some sort of plastic? They looked awful.
-

It was either dipped or sprayed. AFAIK, slazenger were the first people to produce a non oil bat. They called it polyarmoured. Other people produced similar products, eg Fearnley had polyplastic. There were two types of covering, clear and the the white/ cream which as you said covered up poor quality wood. Coated bats pretty much died out when antiscuff became available.

Yes. The Powerspot Tufcoat was one of those white coated, relatively cheap bats. It was almost like a white resin tape.
-
I think the ones that I saw were Slazengers, and the coating was really thick from memory.
-
a millenium 5 star or a longbow titanium. both absolutely flew. used to love the wrap around grips gn did aswell.
-
I think the ones that I saw were Slazengers, and the coating was really thick from memory.
The Slazenger ones I always remember were the V Classic and Carribean which nearly always came in White Polyarmour and had Carribean stripes on the shoulders. And I could never find the middle. I also remember the excalibur shouldered V12 they did for a little while.
-
Wasn't that called the 'WG'? - GN had a Vesuvius, (I think) with no shoulders in that era (1984/5-ish). The white jollop started a lot earlier than that - maybe more than ten years from memory.

It was called the WG - also had one of those way back...
-
It was more squared off at the top than the Newbery Excalibur. The GN from memory looked more like the current Willostix Stick. There was a similar shoulderless bat bat called the 'super bomber' - Hunts??
-
All this talk of GN bats has made me go into the garage and pull out my Megapower.... 'richie benaud' edition.
Probably the only one in existence! The sticker was applied for fust a bit of fun about 20 years ago and a tribute to the greatest man ever to commentate on cricket!
Got me quite a few runs in the late 80's this bat did.
I was inspired by Robin Smith as most of us were at the time. It was cheaper than an elite too!
Enjoy the pics

Is it only the old Powerbow that people like? No fans of the new one?
As for my two cents, I had an Evo Extreme last year, and it was an absolute beast, lovely bat - proved to be just a bit too heavy for me in the end though, so it had to go. I really liked the stickers on the Evo, too - shame GN dropped it for 2012...
-
I reckon that benaud beast may need re-stringing there pedaloboy! ;)
Paul - I think that most people still love the older powerbow but I must admit, this season's powerbow has gone back to a better profile after a couple of funny years!
-
i've had a powerbow since about 2005 and its still in awesome condition and performs superbly for a lesser model
-
Perhaps it was the other way around mate ;)

Na it was a PP, goddamn I loved that bat...
-

The WG was reference to WG Grace; the shape was a 19th Century shape. The Hunts County bat with the sloping shoulders was the Calypso
-
My first ever bat was a Dynadrive. The progressed onto my dads 1980's Powerspot(which i still have in the garage as i'm afraid it will break!!) then bought a longbow. Think i'm about ready for a new one. Was hoping the powerspot would be making a comeback but will be buying a dynadrive(still the best bat i've ever owned!!)
-
Kid at the club has a Powerbow Atomic from a few years ago and it goes very nicely. As with everyone else I prefer the old chunky Powerbow shape
-
Athers' powerspot or Hussains sabre get my vote
-
I wonder who made that 'Super Bomber' then? Back to the GN's I noticed a load of well worn examples in our kit shed last weekend. I'll try to knock up a list of which ones they are, might bring a few memories flooding back.
-
the first nitro..
-
gn dyna drive or the brian lara scoop, what bats they were.
-
the dynadrive, the new one looks aweosome as well, rudolph using one in the test
-
mine in the kaboom le i got :D
-
Re: old GN's in the kit shed, in the interim it looks like someone has been removing stickers...
Anyway, the only one I spotted on a quick recce this weekend was a Scimitar - ring any bells?
-

The Scimitar was only around for a couple of years around 2000. Best way to describe it is that it was an update to the GN 500 Pro balance aka 4 scoop. It's a very nice medium weight bat.
-
gotta be either the legend, scoop or dynadrive for me, especially the new models
-
My oblivion was awesome but it broke in less than a season.
The Quantum I'm using at the moment is really nice but the oblivion has to be the favorite.

Yeh I've got an oblivion players coming at the end of the week, hope it lasts more than a season ! ;)
-
It should mate.
I seem to break my bats after a season anyway. Just something that happens to me...
Quantum is holding up well :D
-
I've had my nitro for 2 seasons but it feels like the handles going
-
The old GN100 and Scoop (circa late 80s), best bats I ever owned.
-
Hi guys,
i got two Gray Nicolls cricket bats of the older version. One is the Powerbow 5 star and the other is the Ignite 4 star.
Both have BSG on the shoulder and BPS on the handle written. Does anyone know what that means?
thanks a bunch,
-
Favourite Hookes Hurricane Twin Scoop circa 1985. In The garage sits a GN Scoop 100 I thin and a Record.
-
Excalibur or Old Powerbow shape - just wish I could find someone selling them!
-
Oblivion extreme pro, 3.3 went like a gun. But as with my npbiggest kahuna, when it finally died, they stopped selling it and the replacements are not liked.
-
I had an Ultimate 750, I think this should be the bat they bring back next year! I've got an Optimum 1000 Megastrike which is unused!
-
Vintage wise nothing goes past my Scimitar but currently my favourite bat is the X181 for performance but love the looks of the new powerbow gen x
-
I had a Mike Atherton power spot back in the day.
A very cheap model wrapped in some sort of all over tape. When the bat was done, I un=wrapped the tape and the inside was full of saw dust.
-
Kaboom. Original though, new stickers are too bright for me
-
I had a Xiphos, I still love it even though half of it is missing.
-
Millennium
-
Scoop 2000 for sure!!
-
I posted earlier in this thread that the Oblivion was my favourite but the Maverick I'm using is slowly changing my mind, the E41 also looks wonderful in terms of shape and stickers!
-
Always liked the powerbow from a few years back...
-
Crusader Ace.
I will 10, it was my first bat.
Edges about 10mm with a spine of around 30.
It was tiny.
A nudgers delight.
-
Legend! Can't beat the classic shape/stickers.....although they've got way to expensive now
-
I had an old powerbow that was my best bat ever.
Pretty fond of this though..

The kind of bat that makes you want to play cricket. Major bat crush !
-
And to think I was going to sell her, now I'm in love <3
-
The Legend. Although the price is somewhat intimidating....
I did like last years oblivion stickers too.
-
Not a big fan of this years stickers.
Liked the oblivion from a couple of years ago, and before that the Powerbow (2006/07 shape)
-
My first ever bat was a GN Crusader Powerline some 30 years ago...does anyone remember those?
I had a GN Crusader, but the Extra Special model, i.e. natural wood, rather than the Powerline non oil version
-
The old 1990's powerspot or dynadrive for me.
-
When I was younger it was the Ultimate or Powerspot. Recent years probably the 2010 powerbow
-
Not a big fan of this years stickers.
Liked the oblivion from a couple of years ago, and before that the Powerbow (2006/07 shape)
I agree with you too. Don't like the stickers from the 2014 batch.
For me it's missing that stylish and classic look that GN are known for.
-
And to think I was going to sell her, now I'm in love <3
And to think I sold her! :(
The GN bats that are made in Robertsbridge from 'players grade' willow I have noticed to be a notch above the off the shelf ones I have seen. (Probably are off the shelf ones just as good, The Ashes edition bat I have made from there is probably one of my three top ones, along with the Meulemans XXX and the old GN Phoenix. I think the Phoenix edges it, just because of the fond memories I had of using one. (Scored my first six with one!)
-
It was the sabre or the lara scoop for me at school
-
Have not used a GN but have a couple for sale and the Oblivion Players Long Blade looks and feels like an absolute gun.

-
Just got the oblivion e41 Le and it's great! Not quite a legend in feel though
-
had 2 powerspots my first two proper bats handle broke on the first sent it back and sent me the updated model that then split from the toe upwards the top half of the bat i still have and is used as a catching bat (saved me a few ££££ looking at the prises they want for them) for coaching kids and has now been christened baby bat by them :) :o
