Title: Time to contribute to the forum
Post by: buddyb on August 09, 2012, 09:51:41 AM
So, I have been bat making for some years now, and researching into the history and traditions to the craft. I thought I would see what you guys think of my latest bat I have made and designed the stickers for. Have been trying to get an apprenticeship, but like all things on this country, no one is interested.  Let me know what you guys think of the bat and design. I will be upload some more.

look good, any chance of some profile pics and from the toe up.

how much of the process have you done? raw cleft or part made?

Looks good though, how long have you been making bats?

sure, I'll go and take some. I have been lucky enough lately to go to an established manufacturer to splice and press my bats at the moment, although I source all my clefts and handles my self though.  I've been making on and off for 2 years now, but on and off since I was at uni whilst I was researching.

I am a big fan of those stickers and the bat doesn't look too bad either!

nice size. decent concaving but still looks chunky. nice shape too.

is it me or is the spine straight all the way along? could just be camera trickery or the stickers playing tricks on my eyes.

what are the specs then? weight, edge and spine height etc?

Thanks guys, I'm still tinkering with the design, a few minor things need correcting. Mainly in the printing side of things. It's 2'10 and harrow sized (I'm pretty short). Edge is 30mm spine is max 60mm. Spine is straight, as just checked it, the stickers reflection is making it look like its not.

Cheers, They have came out pretty well. Was originally meant to have a slight lip onto the edges but the printers printed them too small. Although it would probably look better how it is now.

Thats a nice bat mate, assuming you have made more as you mentioned on and off for 2 years, have all of them been similar shape/profile or have you tried a few different ones...looks lovely

Thanks mate. I made about 20+ experiment and proper bats trying new ways of working, taking them to net sessions and getting feed back from people. I played a game last night and one of the opposition guys was using one of my bats... didn't like the fact he was dispatching our bowlers clear over the rope lol. quick fire 70 n/o in the end haha.

The bat looks lovely! Especially the stickers, but lovely shape to!
Is it possible to see some other bats?

Thats great mate, you must feel proud to see your baby in action, even though with opposition team. If you have pics of some of the other ones you have made i am sure everyone here would love to see them..

Bat wise thats a darn fine effort. Label wise i have to say its the first time for a long while i have been pleasantly surprised. I really like the simplicity of it. The front label in all honesty needs a little more impact but would say really well done but that's me being fussy. Nice job  ;)

I have a few other pictures of one finished bat for a friend and some pictures of the making process of others. Yea was good to see one of my bats in action and scoring some runs. Beautiful ping as he hardly hit them, although I might be a bit bias as I made it lol. Design wise I can see your point, it is rather 'plain' at the front, but when designing, I felt the design should speak for its self and not have something that tells you its by so and so. With all branding its the design you associate to a certain company, so when you see it the bat from a distance, you think, ow thats kookaburra or GN or GM. that was the logic anyway.  :)

Last one to prove I actually do the whole process and splice the handles myself. :)

Great to have another budding batmaker on the forum, welcome mate!

Btw, the profile looks a lot like a Solitaire to me, albeit with slightly chunkier edges.

Stickers look nice as well, but I agree with one of the the other posts that the ones on the front could have a bit more oomph ...

thanks skips. Might have a look at the solitaire bats and see what there profiles are like. Got a couple more bats I am working on atm with a different profile and shape to the toe (a little more flatter). Those were a batch of test prints to see how they came out. I've got about 10 other designs I want to incorporate into the design. :)

I do have some left over... depending how much you'd pay ;) lol. They are printed by a specialist manufacturer that deal with cricket bat printing. Gray Nics, Mongoose and Chase also uses them. Unfortunately you have to buy in bulk and get a load printed at once, but I used my skills in negotiations and managed to get some 'testers' printed. :)
