Title: Full tosses how to deal
Post by: pacman75cricket on August 19, 2012, 09:34:20 PM
I was batting well yesterday hitting my drives 40 out of 50 creaming the ball down the ground until full toss I lobbed up to cover.

Has happened a few times now, am$ I trying to hit too hard ?

Should I just place it more rather than trying to hit it as don't seem to get under to clear infield.

Dont try to hit the ball to hard and concentrate on timing it( hopefully along the ground) should run away if theres any pace on the ball.

Seems ok on low full tosses just knee high ones out side off stick.

I've been bowled by 2 full tosses this season - both trying to spank the cover off the ball!!
Was particularly annoyed last time (just 2 or 3 weeks ago) as the bowler was buffet! So I have been telling myself to not get carried away with a full toss ever since! And in particular trying to tell myself to play ALL full tosses defensively!!
Anyway, I must have listened as I got 2 on Saturday - the first was played defensively for no run (probably should have been a no ball but wasn't given) And the second was thigh high/knee high on middle and leg. So I just played it very straight intending to simply play it along the ground back to the bowler! But because I wasn't trying to lump it one, I must have timed it better as it ended up being a straight drive all the way along the ground to the boundary!! So from now on, any full toss will be defended with a straight bat and if they go for no run, then at least I am still at the crease!
They way I look at it now, I just play it like any other ball......along the ground!

I would say just try and play your natural game... Don't try and over think it

I agree with the Hosk, I would just play it very straight, and if it is on or outside leg stump, either flick it or open up and hit it over mid-wicket/cow. :)

As per the advice from ajm90 I think the main thing is really not to try to hit it too hard, just time it and it'll go anyway. I play pretty cross line anyway so I tend to hit to midwicket or cow but generally it's ok as I don't try to blast it.

A full toss is usually a run scoring opportunity, I feel they should be treated as such

Full tosses outside off, slap them on the floor through cover. Do it very wristily to keep it down.

See ball hit ball.  Doesn't matter whether it's a block for the straight one, slap for the wide one outside off or flick/pull for the one on/outside leg

I find full tosses that are wide outside the off stump are the hardest to play.  I got out to one last week, spooning one up to deep cover.  Didn't have the same problem yesterday, as the full tosses I was getting were all on the legs, which I find a lot easier to clip away for runs...

I will take Joe's advice, and play the off side full tosses more wristily next time...

would you try and drive a ball that had pitched and was knee high?

I suspect you might be going out to meet a ball that might be better played from the crease or off teh back foot...

You almost need to play the ones outside off like a tennis forehand with a bit of topspin to keep it down...

you certainly have to make a conscious decision to either go down or go up and over rather than hitting the ball flat.

Grr fell into the same trap as Mr Hosk on Sat. - threw the kitchen sink at one and bottom edged it onto the stumps - and yes - in retrospect it should probably have been a no ball on height. Probably not given because I had a dart at it...

alwats difficult for the umpires if you go out to meet the ball, isn't it?

hit it into a gap or smash it over cow corner

Got 2 full tosses in a row on Saturday - first one despatched for 6 over "straight cow",  2nd one hit in same place, but off the splice and caught.

More annoyingly, the fielder was out of position after the 1st one, so it went straight down his throat.
