A few weeks ago a certain Mr. fattus asked me if I would be interested in making him a shoulderless bat. I thought it would be a good challenge so jumped at the opportunity, I was given a list of requirements and off I went.
Anyway, I'm a man of little words so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Looks really good what's the pickup like.
Remember Slazenger doing a shoulderless bat years ago.
-
The pickups really good, nice and balanced.
-
Handling your own bats now?
Looks good. Da Phat Cat is going to have bats coming out of his ears soon!
-
Phwooooooaaaarrrrrrrrr!!
I smell runs there!

-
epic ryan haha top work pal !!! :D
-
Hands off Sim-Dog, she's all mine!
I shall name her "Thunderstick"
...or "Bertha"
...... depends on how I bat!
-
2.9oz finished I think, it looks like it's fairy chunky for the weight.
Ryan tells me it picks up well, but then as a consumate salesmen he would!
-
what's the edge size / spine height ryan?
-
It's all about size with you isn't it Henry?
It's a wonderful magic wand, meant to be wafted by a wizard like me!
-
us tailenders need all the edge we can get!. I was just curious as to how much ryan has had to compensate for the lack of weight up top to balance the bat.
-
Spine is about 50/55mm and edges are 20mm at toe and shoulders and 30/35mm at the widest point.

-
Cheers mtate, fitting? Handle and splice??
yes mate
-
It actually came spliced but I'm in the process of making a new jig so it will all be done in house :D
Obviously ive had the trim and set the handle. I've also had to cut the blade to length, cut the toe in as well as the shoulder drop.

Unlikely that big man especialy in your hands ha ha ? sorry couldn't resist
-
Ooooooooooohhhhhh - get her!
-
lol i did read a topic saying something like your so bad all your kit was for sale big lad ? and you still not been up north yet.
-
This is true my well-upholstered friend, it was. I have since decided to not be such a big girl and am going to give it another try after a winter of seeeeerious training!
Hoping to come up late Sept / Early Oct to see Granny Kelso - will keep in touch.
-
Hope you'll be netting with us in Basingstoke sometime Brucie baby! Local pub or bar for a jar to discuss techniques after too! 8)
-
No beer or burgers for me!!! I'm strictly a diet coke and grilled chicken kind of guy now!
But yes, I'm up for the next one - need to practice the old bowling at some point though!
-
Just a quick note to say that this bat has arrived with me. It feels lovely, a nice light pick-up, and very smooth finishing, it taps up well with an old ball too. It will not be to everyone's taste - but i love it, and it feels nice in the hands.
A word on Ryan too - he's been fantastic and has kept in touch all the way through the process, he''s been keen to pleae and has matched my specs excellently.
All that remains is the boring issue of knocking it in and seeing how it perform. If it turns out to be a 'right-goer' then I shall have no hesitation in going to Ryan for a bat again.
-
He didn't knock it In for you ? :o
Mine came knocked in...
-
Cheers mate! Thanks for the update, i'm glad your happy with your new wood! It's always hard making something for someone so far away...we got there in the end. Let me know how she plays!
Johnny, it only came knocked in because simmy abused it prior. That lad's an animal!
-
Outrageous!!!!!
Hope my other bat comes knocked in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'm sure it can be arranged sir, although simmy does my knocking in...so it's up to you ;)
-
haha bruicey lad i offer a knocking in service but sadly its only the edges!
-
That I can do myself - the inside edge mash is my speciality.
-
have you hit a ball in anger yet squire?
-
Not yet Obi-Wan, it is still in the preparation stage.
-
Lovely bat fletcher !
How much weight did you take off the cleft by removing the shoulders
-
Thanks, I'm not really sure as didn't weigh before or straight after. My guess would be a couple of oz
-
Having met up with a few of the guys last night for a bit of a net and test of some kit I managed to get my hand on this bat.
I can't honestly compliment Ryan enough, the balance is tremendous. And for a shoulderless bat of which I am a fan (i have a few) this is by far and away the best example... eclipsing the James laver "paddle" bat i had made.
It took a while to even notice where the wood hade been taken from to get it to work. Certainly not obvious if you are simply looking to see how much had been scooped from the back of the bat.
I didn't have a proper net as Bruce is still knocking the bat in but in terms of pick up, balance and quality of finish. This was one of the best examples of care and attention to detail i have seen from a young batmaker. I'm not often surprised, even less so "pleasantly" when it come to cricket stuff these days but will tip my hat in this lads direction.
You can feel the effort and care thats been poured into this and if he continues to work to this standard then these earlier effort may just be a bargain.

Love my RK - planning to sell all other bats and keep mine as 'the one'
-
I did have a little pick up and waft around of the shoulderless bat as well and it did feel very nice.
But I was too busy testing other things to pay too much attention to it!

i want another one of them lol
-
Bat looks lovely, but for the shoulderless model the stickers need either a redesign or a quick trim.
-
i think this was just a one off mate not really worth a sticker redesign

In the flesh so to speak it looked near on perfect. I'd pay to have a bat from him.

Should have got the scissors out and got creative then ;)
EDIT-Just seen Marcus' post, in that case I'll let it fly, they just looked a little odd in the pictures, as the rest of it looks great.
-
Thanks for the kind words Marcus. It's always nice to have positive feedback. I feel I've still got a lot to learn but hopefully on the right track!

I'm making myself one over the weekend, having seen the tempo I feel the need for a "big" bat :D
-
Hey Ryan - it's not about the bottom - it's about the shoulders!
-
I'm more a bottom kind of guy Bruce :)
-
I have heard this about you.
-
Great looking bat mate!
