After declaring I would not be buying any more cricket gear, I seemed to have bought more gear than ever over the last month or so (bats, pads, gloves). I picked this bad boy up from GCCC on Sunday. Went in to have an older bat sent away for a refurb and I ended up picking up this is a BAS Pride - It is Grade 2, which I imagine is due to the Heartwood but that doesn't bother me. As it always goes, I didn't even send the older bat away which was the reason I went in, lol.
Was looking at the GN Legend, Bradbury Players, GN Ultimate, BAS Shadow and this BAS Pride - after deliberating which one to get, I just couldn't resist (although the Shadow looked immaculate and was beautiful off the Malet, but was too heavy at 2lb11oz's) as it looks great, felt really good of the Malet and had a really nice pick-up. I could have easily splurged and bought the more expensive ones, but couldn't justify spending upwards of $600, so this was a nice buy at $299 considering I have a lovely Blenheim Cambridge and another beauty which I will be picking up tomorrow morning.
Comes in at 2lb8.9oz's on my scales, but feels no heavier than 2lb8oz's. Has 33mm edges and a medium bow. I count 19 ruler straight grains without a single blemish on the bat.

Blimey....that looks decent!! :o
Grainlicous and if it's anything like every BAS bat I have ever used, then it will go superbly too!
That is a superb buy I reckon! Well done fella!

Indeed it is :D
It feels like it will be a cracker, am really wrapped with it. Plenty of time to knock it in too considering I'm out of action till November at the earliest I reckon.

What GCCC store?
Acually very good value for a piece of willow like that (hard to come by in Australia).
Enjoy the New season :)

Underwood in QLD - only my second time in that store. I usually go to the one in Albion (which I have been to many times), but I am actually much closer to the Underwood one.
I know what you mean, most of the bats look pretty average, which I know isn't the most important factor, but at the prices they charge you want them to look good too. The Shadow was even better IMO, had 12/13 perfect grains and only a tiny bit of heartwood, plus it tapped up really nicely too - but it weighed 2lb11oz, which is too heavy for me.
Cheers, hopefully I wont miss too much of the season - get my cast of on Monday :D (broken foot). Are you based in Australia too?

Great looking bat, the stickers look a lot nicer than most of the BAS bats I have seen in the UK too
-
I have to get either a BAS or SS for next season :).. just not sure which to go for but after seeing this little stick BAS might just have edged infront of SS..
Nice stick

are the newly branded BAS bats going to make it to the UK?

I have had a few SS and a few BAS, and in my experience the BAS bats have been consistenly high performance bats. The SS are decent but given the choice, I have found the BAS bats better.

Next Year
We have received bats this season from BAS but with old stickers or Plain.

That's lovely mate, only think I'm not fond of is that big ass ugly edge sticker :).
Looks a belter!

Have to agree, apart from the edge sticker which looks like an afterthought, it looks a cracker

Yeah, was thinking it looked pretty ordinary. Will more than likely remove it.

I was surprised too, but I suppose a fair few people don't like the look of the heart wood, but I don't mind it at all, so to me it is a beauty.

I really hope you oil this bat langer, looks a lovely stick but me thinks it needs a drink...plus the grains will really look class :)

I'm not one to oil the face of bats, I just put the anti scuff sheets on the face then oil the remaining exposed areas :D

If it works for you then great... I find if more than a third of the face is Heart wood its better to give her a drink and then knock it....we all have our own ways and beliefs :D

Nice looking bat that one.

Out of curiosity, why is it better to give it some oil on the face if more than a third of it is heartwood?

Call it my superstition or make belief but if HW is harder/older wood that is more brittle i assume oiling it would soften it a bit and reduce the chance of cracking sooner, I just find it knocks in better too...atleast thats what i have convinced myself of...I think this calls for all bat gurus to put me in my place :-[
Also multi grainers are usually from older trees that are low on sap so oiling helps retain that in but so does a scuff sheet...
-
Yeah I noticed a surface crack on it already, so that's what was making me think about oiling it. I asked for a scuff sheet when I was there, but forgot to actually get it, so when I was having a hit with it at home a small surface crack appeared.
Still leaning towards the scuff sheet, but not too sure if I should oil it as well now lol
-
I would definitely oil it, just aply oil to a rag(not too much 5ml?) and then use the rag to polish up the bat, do it 2/3 times (using smae rag and reducing the oil applied to the rag each time), applying oil to the rag and then bat should make it very hard to over oil.

Hey mate, how does this thing go? I actually had a look at these a couple of weeks back when I was picking up a Masuri at GCCC. All were super multi-grain loaded bastards. In the Maddocks Sports catalogue it says all the BAS Pride bats are guaranteed 12+ grains. Not a bad shape and pick up as well when I had a swing, top buy.
-
That bat is a beauty, very hard to get this quality BAS Vampire in the UK

who do you play for in Brisbane Langer?

Haven't given it a go and will more than likely sell it. Taps up pretty good, it's just that I really like my Helios.

Nice, how'd did you find your time over here? Uni are basically our rivalry club, usually good games against them. BBC hey, I work near there, just at Coronation Place (directly across from the Toowong shops).
-
was really good played a few second grade games but mainly threes but thought the cricket was great and loved brisbane. toowong's a pretty nice area i though and BBC was a good place to work. the main oval got a bit destroyed by the floods the other year i hear.
