just looking for some training drills and different ways and advice on how to play the short ball better! help would be appreciated!
-
Footwork is important (as always). Back and across is what I get told to do when practising. Dont be afraid to wear a chest guard.
-
bowling machine around 60-65mph at the head does the trick after a few hours ;)
-
Tennis ball to start with convidence
Then change it to real balls all short pitched
Remember to keep your eye on the ball
-
i agree on the footwork part

I had a friend of mine serve tennis balls at me. He was a pretty good player and hit me in the head a fair bit, it's quite a fun exercise to be honest. That being said you do have carefull with this as tennis ball can get through between a grill and peak!! It will make you're eyes water!

This is the best way to learn. Work out what you can hit, what you can get out of the way from and what you can defend.
It takes a while but is worth it.
then move on the the bowling machine

I love the sound of this! Sounds like a Woolmer-esque training method.
Perhaps to really get your eye in you could ask a golfer to drive some balls at you from 22 yards.
As someone who prefers the ball the faster and shorter it comes my advice is -
1. Fear should not cross your mind. Get a lid on and be prepared to wear a few sometimes, No one has ever died from a bruised chest/arms. If you want proof of this YouTube 'Brian Close'.
2. Certainly at the levels I've played at, you almost always have more time than you think. That said, stay with the shot and Get a feeling for the technique, this is where the bowling machine is good. Do not use the short ball as an excuse for a wild thrash
3. Always watch the ball as far onto the bat as possible. You stand a much better chance of hitting the ball, or avoiding it if that is your intention, with your eyes open.
Best of luck!

This is a nice video in which Hayden talks about the pull shot at 2:49. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPTIPyxrYeI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPTIPyxrYeI)

get down on you knees and get some throw downs.

If your down on your knee's and practising, surely that wouldnt make a different atall seems as when you accualy playing the shot in a game or nets etc.. you havent practised moving your feet into the correct position to play at the shot?
-
Thanks for the advice fellas!
-
Start with slower short balls, build up to faster speeds. When pulling/hooking stay offside/inline of the ball. Watch Ponting or Lara

Off-side? An awful lot of pull shots are played to balls on the off-side of the body
-
one technical point which helped me was to turn the back foot to face the bowler, allows you to get more chest on and hit the ball at arms length. Saw Cameron White do it today and he smacked it!

I am not sure I would advise this as it will square you up and make you a bigger target... but find a method which works for you.

I've got a coaching book (a very old coaching book) which shows both feet pointing towards the bowler for the pull shot! I tend to be back and across and swivel on the shot so this is close to where I end up but to get there before the ball reaches you I've always thought was a big ask
-
Vaughan and Ponting always used to roll and swivel with the ball catching it on the way up and almost always looked to hit it for six. Vaughan down under in 03/04 was a exhibition in pulling the ball.

If you look at the foot position of international players when playing the back foot pull or hook shot or back foot drive that should help you out. Just copy the top players, it works for them
-
Practising with hard, short throw downs from a tennis ball is definitely one of the best ways to practice. Back and across with your feet is definitely the best, but also try and keep the mindset that, within reason, and with good footwork, you can pull on length as much as line. Try and play the ball out in front of you to let it get too big on you to stop top edges/facial rearrangements

If you get into the right position, you'll find instinct will play 90% of the shot for you to avoid getting hit in the face.

Cricket isnt an exact science like mathematics, it is more of an art so i wont say that keeping your backfoot sideways is wrong. I use the method of turning my backfoot towards the bowler/cover to open up the shoulders, keep teh head forward in the shot, get a better sight of the ball and allow the hands to get higher and come from point to square leg at arms length. I was thaught htis by Gus Logie and Desmond Haynes fover an 8 week period as i was struggling opening against 85mph. It worked for me and i often see the top internationals doing it so it must have some credibility ...

there are countless examples of the back foot pointing down the wicket when pulling and hooking.
-
every single one of those pictures is from after the shot is played.
not getting into position, which is more important.
nice shots though!
-
and some very nice bats .... apart from Gordon Greenidge ...his bat wouldnt sell for £50 on here!!
-
All those are from after the ball has been hit, I'd say it's almost impossible to keep your foot parallel with the crease as your whole body swivels playing the pull shot, so those photos don't necessarily show how they have their feet to play the shot
-
A while ago, I was taught it was all about footwork when playing the pull. Now, I just see ball and whack ball. I don't bother thinking about what my feet are doing. If you try and complicate things, like thinking about your body/foot position, you end up not focussing on the ball and either miss it, get hit or get out. If you see it banged in short just belt it out the park!
-
This would have to be the first time in his entire career Sehwag's foot movements have been used in an educational and training capacity.
-
Off-side? An awful lot of pull shots are played to balls on the off-side of the body
What I mean is that there is a temptation to get the left leg outside leg stump and swipe across the line, which isn't good. The further across your stumps you get the easier the pull shot is.
-
Nice little drill here about how to practice leaving the short ball. you can start by using a tennis ball and then move to a cricket ball. Do practice with your lid on as it helps you get used to how you are balanced as you watch the ball

i need to practing hiting the short ball not ducking no body in our league is quick enough for u need to be able to duck
-
Simmy's a large target, I can see it being tricky for the thrower to miss him lol
Might of been mentioned but a tennis racquet and tennis balls from 15 yards are pretty good. I got Ryan to fire bouncers down at 60-65mph with the bowling machine last year at Headingley. Wore a few but really helped after a couple of 10 minute sessions. It's as much about getting your feet and body organised to deal with the ball as much as anything. I found that I could let pass or hook the stuff over the top of off but when it got tight into my body I had to move towards off and pivot on my back foot and follow it around to avoid getting hit/hook it. Helped alot as in one game I got a surprise bouncer and I instinctively hooked it like a tracer through mid wicket. Previously I would've tried to duck it.
