Title: Virat Kohli
Post by: bigbenh99 on September 19, 2012, 02:49:46 PM
Kohli using a Nike-stickered bat which is sporting "TON" stickers on the edges of the bat vs Afghanistan today. He's wearing BAS gloves and pads that I can't see the branding of (think they're SS). Does he not have a sponsor or what is going on with the mish-mash of kit?

My guess is multiple sponsors.   ;)

It's pretty unusual isn't it for someone to have multiple kit sponsors? I'm assuming it's because he's earmarked as future India captain so companies are chucking money at him even for as small a part as gloves?

Nike and Aero are distributed by the same company in the UK I think? Might explain the Nike bat and the Aero pads look?

Same as Tendulkar with Adidas, (who have sponsored him for years before they made bats) Dhoni/Yuvraj with Reebok.

Also Raina is using a Chavidas bat and SG/SS softs, I'm pretty sure the Indian's couldn't at less the amount they earn in the IPL is probably miles more than what they'd get for a Kit sponsor.

His bats too are of TON...

How do you mean by that? That they don't do softs?

Noticed Yuvraj using an 'Adidas' bat with TON on the edge, same with Dhoni's 'Reebok'. Do the main sponsors just not really care that they leave those edge stickers on? Surely anyone who knows anything of cricket would recognise they aren't using the bats that the stickers claim they are?

They were covered in Ton even when he was with SG. Devilliers was using a Kook stickered SS ton bat in the IPL lol. IMO its just clever stuff from SS as now everyone knows who uses their bats. Everyone should brand their bats.

Tendulkar has used Morrant Pads with Adidas logo's inserted or stuck over where the Morrant logos were.

Is that 'TON' on the side removable? I mean is it a sticker or is it carved into the wood and painted? As if it's stickers I don't understand why they're never removed. Ravi Bopara did this earlier in the year when he was using a bat stickered as GM (I think?) but had 'TON' on the edge

its burnt into the wood!

Burnt like 2-3 mm in the wood

Oh right, I misunderstood when The_Bird said "Everyone should brand their bats" I didn't realise it was an actual brand! I thought that the players had just become lazy when removing stickers! But yeah it is very smart from SS to brand their bats, as it's a very intelligent form of (presumably) free marketing!

You would have thought that the only cost would be a few free bats. What I dont understand is why there sponsors let them do it.

Also why not use the sponsors bat if its supplied to you.....maybe SS throw in some cash with the none stickered bats, so the player can add his sponsor stickers.

Yeah that's what I mean, I think that's really innovative marketing, I don't know of any other company that brands their bats, and it's very shrewd business giving high profile players some free bats, even with other companies stickers on it's still HUGE exposure for them, and anyone who knows about cricket can tell that they're using SS bats
