Title: To all bat makers! I'm after something special...
Post by: toby176 on September 21, 2012, 03:10:36 PM
Hello all bat makers, custom companies and forum dwellers.

As I will be taking up a summer job and shall have a bit of surplus cash lying around, and what else to spend it on but a cricket bat or two!  :D

I am after something really special, cleft wise! And I have a shape in mind... In fact, on paint!

The spine is a little out, but it was really just to show the flat face!

As money is not an issue, I'm really after something not to short of perfect. Something that really performs, looks good and is light/big! The holy trinity.

And to compete with a Bradbury Players X which belongs to a friend of mine who, despite my H4L still believes his bat (and off the shelf bats) is/are better.

I will be doing a fair bit of research and taking my time on this bat, so I apologize if this post is slightly premature!

So to all those bat makers out there, if you have a really special cleft lying around or happen get one in, comment or drop me a PM and I'll get shall be right on the reply!

Thank you one and all,

looks similar to the SAF bat Andy was talking about today, or the new tempo h4l I think.

those blank bats are good too!

Does look similar to all three of those shapes!

Does the Tempo not have more traditional edges? And I have always liked the look of Blank Bats... Hmm :)

It would be awesome to see that shape BB! I'm sure I will soon though.

I plan for this bat to be quite chunky! :D

Ohh right, I live in Australia!

I'm after 2.8 ideally, but perhaps 2.9. with 37mm+ edges and roughly a 70mm spine. So a low density cleft!

GM Icon + Original. Get the flat faced version and get a bit lucky with the weight and that won't be far off.

The reason I have gone for this is that over here, the GN XXX is just massive. With dimensions very similar to that, if not bigger. So it can be done..

2.8 with 37mm edges and 70mm spine... that's almost impossible without either seriously heavy concaving or a very very dried out cleft - the problem with these options is that they aren't actually conducive to a good bat. You either have a bat that potentially won't last long (if it is dried out) or a bat that has a great middle but nothing either side.

I've lived in Perth and have never seen an XXX with these specs! But then you did say a special cleft I suppose...

How long ago did you live in Perth mate?

Perhaps a bit off the spine.

yeah but that spine is only about 55mm lol if the edges are around 40mm lol a 70mm spine is like a destinction

Says the edges are 45mm.
I said that the spine height is up for compromise, I do understand that a 70mm spine is a bit unrealistic!

Why these specs mate?

If you are only 16, the chances of you having already found the absolute perfect bat for your style are pretty slim.

I am 29 and have only just the last few years settled on the perfect bat for my game.

The bat you want to those specs comes with serious compromises...... I'd be trying a few other things.... If you are a touch player and want to use a light bat, I would go a smaller bat..... Best light bat I've ever had is a mongoose, nothing imposing about the shape, but middle goes the length of the bat, is so mobile it feels weightless, and still pings brilliantly if you time it.

You don't need an enormous bat.... Particularly if you are looking for a 2.8 pound bat.

Well I fancy the shape.

What compromises are we talking bout here mate? I live in Australia and have a H4L with a slightly rounded back at the moment but is a fraction heavy and the middle is a bit high as I tend to drive a lot. I am not a touch player but I don't just slog, somewhere in the middle.

Really? Do I not need a big bat? I think that it would be nice to try a big bat, as all other bats I have used haven't been real big. And wielding an imposing bat is a nice feeling, and potentially a confidence boost for myself. I like the look of flat faced bats with big edges, and the spine was honestly a bit of a guess as to the size, I really just want edges that are around what I specified (37mm) and a spine as big as possible but without this incredible amount of concave. A 60mm spine would still be a big bat. If I'm buying a bat, which is an expensive thing especially from here I would like something that like that and it'd be nice to have such a bat from a forum brand.

I dont think that bat profile will suit a front foot player who drives the ball  :o

It's cool bro, just trying to give you some advice..... Some guys get caught up in the "bigger is better" mentality and it doesn't really suit their game. I know I used to.

Fair point, but we generally play on tracks with a lot of bounce, and seem to hit the ball a little way up the blade when I drive...

And Trundler, I know. Sorry if that came of rude... Its really just something that I've been thinking about for a fair while now.
I really just wanna give it a go mate.

If you hitting it high and drive are you hitting the ball on the down stroke otherwise it will be coming out quite high every so often?

As someone has pointed out that XXX only has 55mm spine. And also you're looking at £400+ for one of those if I remember correctly, so it won't come cheap. It also was a bat used by an overseas pro, suggesting he probably got a 'pick' of some of their better clefts. Not saying its impossible (well its impossible for us at Blenheim but I'm sure you'll find a batmaker who might have a go), but saying I think you're demands are a bit unrealistic at that weight.

On a different point, I've played good cricket for a while now and have never really come across a serious player who cares massively about their 'edge size' - its much more about feel. Sure they like to look down and see a big bat, but they're not that fussed. On the odd occasion a player does care about edge size they don't care about weight...just food for thought. I lived in Perth for 10 years up until 2006...

Sorry mate I'm unsure if I entirely understand this question? But by down stroke do you mean when I connect with the ball, is my bat angled backwards as opposed to being vertical?

To Blenhaim, know what you mean mate. Two of my team mates have bats just like this, but I do get that it sounds crazy. If I go for a bat with a 60mm spine, then I'm sure something around that will be possible.

I feel I am a tad misunderstood in what I'm trying to say... I really just want a bat that is as big as possible in that shape! As for feel its hard when its online, obviously. I wouldnt say I'm really super fussed, it was more of an indicator as to how I am imagining this bat..
Ohh okay mate! Did you find it a nice place?

Yes angled backwards as the ball will need to hit the ground fairly early to stop being caught

Yeah 60mm spine sounds much more feasible, as the concaving won't need to be so drastic to keep it in the 2.8-2.9 weight range. Perth was great, loved living there - a fantastic place to grow up.

Good luck finding the bat, I'd love to see some pictures as it does sound a flipping awesome bat!
