I have had an RPC this season which seems to have ruined everyother bat for me , used a Screaming Cat (from Dan) over the weekend which felt very nice but not as good as RPC.
Have you had a bat that has been heads and shoulders above anything you have ever owned?
-
Not sure I'd say head and shoulders above, but I have a Newbery B52XL that, whilst having a face for radio, has a middle that is basically the whole face and just feels perfect in my hands. Any time I'm out of nick, out it comes and I seem to feel better immediately.
Only problem is, its falling to bits and all attempts to copy it have failed!

BAS Vampire Blaster.
So stupid to have sold it - guy in my club is still using it to smash sixes .... :(

That must be heart wrenching!! I noticed a crack on the shoulder on by RPC that I was told was a "coning" crack fortunately it hasn't gotten worse but for a week I was really really disappointed, not because a bat might be dying but because THE bat was dying :(...

Gm hero 909. The whole face was the middle. My sg cobra came close.

Can you buy it back?

I to Had a SG Cobra which so far has been top of the pile. But it had a full season use where as my D&R and SAF have had a few nets and only 5 matchs between them.
Where did you get the Cobra from?

I've had chance to come to terms with it now, its a full year since I was able to use it as my match bat, now I just use it for the odd game when I need a bit of extra confidence.

A very unimpressive looking Newbery Mjolnir for me! 2.10, wavy grains (think it was the middle of the range one?) but it just flew. I still own it but I've lent it to a mate at my club who has hit 3 ton's with it (more than I ever did!) It's worth saying that it was the last bat I kept for more than a season. I used it for 3 seasons before lending it out so maybe it's a good example of how a bat can develop over time and, in fact, we all need to hang on to our bats for a bit longer! I'm trying to thin out my bats a little so I can actually use the others I have more and see if they develop like this one did...

Mate got the cobra from india for me. cost me about £100 about 7 years ago

Thats a very valid point, I think procricket also mentioned that somewhere, we need to give our bats some time. I am sure my other bat(s) would get a little better as i use it more...
-
GM Purist 808, 2.10, used it 3 times and got 109, 65* and 114.
Having said that my Icon isn't all that far away, will be gutted when that goes!

It's tough when we're all basically hanging out in the equivalent of a sweetshop where we're constantly tempted by new blades but I do wonder how many of us (myself included) ever really see the full performance of the bats we own....I'm going to make a concerted effort to do this but I reckon it's going to be tough. I have 7 great bats currently and I am going to thin it to 3. My Chase, CF and one other to be decided.....everything else is going to have to go! Wish me luck!! :D

A few years back I went on tour to Sri-lanka and my kit got "lost" on route. Had to go to a tiny back-alley cricket shop in Colombo for new gear and picked up a BDM Dynamic Power for about £80. Wonderful wonderful bat.
I think your bat preferences change with age and you carve your own technique but at that time it was perfect for me. Broke my heart when it snapped, still don't have the heart to throw it away. I think only a viking style long boat furneral would be good enough for her :(

have seen 2 BDM dynamic powers with broken handles in last 2 weeks
Great bat but poor handles

I was going to say that I probably play enough cricket that I do but then, I break a lot of bats so probably break a few before they ever get to their very best!
-
I've still got my ancient Newbery Excalibur. Used it for about five seasons and it did seem to get better and better. Mind you, I didn't spend as long in the middle as some of you guys.
-
The HUnts County Insgnia that I gave to a Cricket Charity in 1998 as it had developed a terminal crack from the toe 3/4 of the way up the blade... Should never have given it away :(

It broke everywhere by the time I had finished with it lol. I think it's 2/5ths tape and excess scuff sheet now.

Had a Dukes Pro Century jumbo shaped bat. Was around 2'10 and a little bottom heavy with a big oval handle. First time I used it I gave some trundler the charge. He push it wide of me and I lunged almost slicing across the ball, only to see it fly 80 yards for six. Scored 700 runs @ 70 odd with it before the handle went. When people say they don't remember you hitting the ball that hard you know you have a good stick!.
I've been lucky to not have many poor bats. Managed to lose a very ordinary Hunts Mettle, had a GN Millenium that was a bit of a twig and I've been done a few times on pickup/weight but rarely performance. My GM Icon+ at the moment seems as good as any bat I've had.

Can you buy it back?
He won't let it go...
-
Screaming Cat Series One period.
-
Newbery series one I had and is still in the corner of my bedroom at my parents house.....set the standard and since having tried many bats the Scat S1 which will take some beating (but will soon be retired)
-
Bad memories with that Series One Newbery
-
Haha went like a good in that's for sure before the inside edge went :(
-
Hopefully my new Newbery Mjolnir...
but other than that, definitely my size 4 Purist 606. When I was tiny (I still am I guess), this bat just flew despite having the muscle mass of your average carrot.
-
My match bat this year, Hattori LE.
The whole thing is honestly a middle!
Hopefully the Laver is going to top that :)
-
Salix pod which is now 2 years old and it is a reall gun best money ever spent. People make a good point as it really does seem to perfrom a lot better in the back half of the season so i do think it took a season to reach optimum perfromance.
Someone once told me that once it reaches this level it means it wont last much longer??
Anyone got an opinion on that as i really hope not.
-
I don't think this is true as mine has been going well for 4 seasons now even ith various cracks etc around the toe/edge.
Think it maybe our own perception that biases this a little as your seldom in great form from the off but likely to be (hopefully) finding it more towards the middle of the season.
-
I had a kookaburra diablo that i used as a match bat for quite a few seasons, that was better than any other bat i've ever had and I doubt i'll ever find one as good again. Really opened up after a while, the middle was beautiful until it snapped :(
-
Ive heard a guy from kookaburra talking about their bats on interview and he def said optimum performance means the bat is about to 'go' so its then time for a new one.
This forum is a complete nightmare for buying bats im trying to stick to just one for all of next season
-
yea i was told this from a person in the trade as well. Shame that as soon as it really starts to ping the higher the chance for it to break seems to be
oh well lucky im going to see Matt and get my first H4L next week :D
-
Think I have been pretty lucky - my GM Hero 808 is still going strong after 3.5 seasons, and before that I had a CA Limited Edition that was also a top bat. Looks as though the H4L that I was using at the end of the season is also going to be a good un :D
-
A Gray Nicholls Elite LE back from the early nineties... David Boon used one so I had to as well.... Aaahhhh the good old days
-
I had a Saurav Ganguly's personal SS TON Limited Edition bat. But then the bat gods took it away from me. It got lost in UK customs when I sent it for a refurb. I don't think I need to say I have yet to pick a better stick than that.
-
I went from a TT SPS to a H4L 666 monster at the start of this season. I thought the TT was good but the Monster is fantastic!
