I think mr saf is implying he makes his bats from scratch unlike other mortals!!

I've seen some of your posts so not surprised... :D but as a of way explanation, we are in the fortunate position that we can make from scratch, so completely handmade. So not just pre-shaped and sanded and has a sticker on it....

We dont mind those that shape original shapes, we all have to start somewhere... We dont like stickers-r-us though

But re-stickering bats is an art form in itself.....
@micheal acc
Use the items wanted page as I think you might be after a bat, just a hunch
;)

I sort of agree with Mr SAF. Maybe the "Cricket Manufactures/Brands" Section should be split into two individual sections "Batmakes" and "Branded Bat Companies"
-
I do agree that bat makers and people who put stickers on there bats are different. BUT some of the people who sticker there bats have a lot of input into the shape and design of the bats, where as others don't they just pick stock shapes. I think there is differing categories under the 'i sticker bats up' some just get bats willy nilly and sticker them up, others specify shapes they want making and have far more input into the bats. I'm not saying this is the same as making a bat completely from scratch, but surely it's better than someone who doesn't really care what shape bats they are and just wacks stickers on them?
-
There are actually at least three different categories!
The first is the person who gets bats and applied their stickers
The second is the person who get part mades and shapes and finishes them
And the third is the person who makes the bat completely

most important one is the person who shows up with a wallet full of cash to spend it all ;)
But realistically though if as a batmaker you have 2 streams where you make your bats for a company/person and supply unstickered and other stream is where you sell for your own brand. Does that make the bat supplied to the company/person any worse/better?

Yes you are right.... I think it is the people that say they make them and just sticker them
-
I think there needs to be standardization where stickers read
Made by us in UK/India
Finished by us in UK/India, Made in UK/India
Supplied from UK/India

I'm very cynical about this I guess! Why would a batmaker sell off the best of his stock of willow to another company to sticker up as their own? Surely he would keep the best stuff for himself?

I get what you are saying but then SG/Kooka are a good example, similarly SS, Protos etc etc. I am sure there are UK brands that supply other brands as well, TK is one but excluding him.
If as a brand you sell 400 bats a year but have capacity to manufacture 600 why wouldn't you sell extra 200 so some other brand for a smaller profit?

So that once the customer sells their stock they come back for more?
-
So he'd sell off the best stuff to someone else? He wouldn't keep it for himself?
Nope, don't believe it. ;)
Especially as I have read on here that sourcing the best quality willow is getting harder and harder and as a result willow prices are going up...
-
Maybe not the best, best stuff, but he'd be a fool not to send out stuff of good enough quality to maintain a business model.
-
I do wonder what the likes of SAF do with their proportion of lower grade clefts beause they don't "do" a G3 or G4 model at all...

You are assuming that all willow comes from Wrights. There are other suppliers who may not have the same supply terms.
-
I know one chap who uses a lot of his crappy clefts to heat his kitchen with.... ;)
I'd imagine they are very crappy though... :D

SAF only buys G1 and super best so you can guess the supplier, they sometimes get down graded it is a bit wood afterall... They get offered as G2's

actually my knowledge of willow suppliers is pretty minimal so I really can't! sorry!

As I said, I'm very cynical but this is the thought I have in my head when I am looking at stickered up bats. I always think I could get a better bat by going directly to the maker.

I dont buy from JSW. I have a great relationship with the willow supplier I buy from which is the most important thing for me. No point in naming them because the bat makers on here will know who he is and the last thing they need is people calling them asking for prices on clefts or asking for 1 cleft with no real commitment to buy them.....

hahaha :D.....
Actually those are going to be kids bats for some friends of mine, if I gave them some shinny stickers on those as is they'd be happy... Saying that my son is complaining that his bat needs sanding after it left out in the drizzle so they aren't all magpie's
I've seen tidier workshops too :D
When people turn up I get them on find the pencil duty..... I'm always losing that and the spoke shave... I tidy up when I cant find the drawknife!!!!
-

hes obviously far too busy to clean up or doesnt have some kind of cleaning/tidy fetish!
im with andy on this one. playing find the pencil and spokeshave is fun, its when it gets serious when your wading through shavings or cant actually find your bench that you really need to tidy
