Title: B3 bespoke
Post by: roco on October 19, 2012, 03:45:10 PM
B3 bespoke

Right I've been on look out for something new and interesting and looked at a few brands and asked a few friends about this and that and the idea of a b3 came up so got in contact with b3 to find out more info, after speaking to streaky I decided to delve deeper into the bespoke bat

After booking a Skype chat (a first for me) we chatted about the weather etc then got on to bat designing. He explained about how they put specs and desired weight into the model and can match that to the density of willow needed to make that shape in the exact size and weight required , so after discussing things we came to a shape ( altering spine heights swell heights toe thickness everything really)  density etc,he said he would pick a few clefts with the required density and let me choose between.Last thing was to take particulars and book a collection date as i wanted to visit the factory but as a cnc engineer by trade I did not need to see it machined I preferred to pick up the finished article so  signed off but have to say it was a very informative and pleasant chat and no pressure or rush put on anything so seems a very professional but approachable company which is a great blend

I got given a choice of 4 clefts so asked advice of a few people I trust as I was shown clefts and told what weights (to within 1/4 oz) they would come out at in my shape due to density and picked one which gave me desired weight

Ok so went up to the factory today to see the b3 team and when I got there streaky was hard (loose term) at work so I popped my head round door and was warmly greeted and a brew was made toot sweet

I was guided round factory with the usual machinery apart from a cnc up the corner and some beautiful clefts about then was escorted into the show room where my little friend was waiting

On to the bat

Specs ordered

2lb14-3lb
1-1.5" long blade
Mid middle
Big hitting zone
No concaving

Got

2lb13.5
1.3" long blade
Mid middle
40mm edges
68mm spine
No concaving very full booty
19 grains slight heartwood to outside edge

After gripping up (streakys limited edition Guinness grip) and choosing stickers I chatted with streaky and Russell about all things cricket (Russell is as geeky as us when comes to equipment) I even managed to damage the roof while bouncing ball on the bat (sorry again) so taking that as a good sign

Summary

Well all in all a fantastic day out and service a way through and fascinating what they can do with there computer model to create stunning bats even the finishing has improved so much from first week (procrickets only downside ) so shows the guys learn quick and listen they also have 15% off all top range bats till Xmas so with kit on rise its not a bad option

Any questions feel free to ask
Ok enough waffling by me on to pics (I'm no simmy Pete or cover drive so no lip)

Nice intro and a lovely looking bat (not sure about how well those stickers have been put on) but a lovely looking bat. Almost GM Halo in shape, perhaps. but bigger, I suspect.

you have done really well there!!

do they have examples in the workshop of the different shapes, sometimes it is hard to picture how a bat might look on a computer...

I contributed to stickers not being right as I was distracting but only back one rest fine haha

Yes they have examples of different shapes as have about 15-20 made up to do just that I even broached them about being a sponsor if only for a bit to come on and explain process etc if there welcome

I was very adamant that I wouldn't show much interest in machine made bats since I started buying handmade ones, but I am really quite intrigued now. Most likely not going to purchase anytime soon, but the selecting of clefts being based on willow density is quite interesting. It's around £300 for this bespoke option, right? If you would spend around that much on a top end GM, I don't see why you wouldn't go for this option IMO, afterall you could specify so much more!

Really nice looking stick, I hope it goes well for you Roco! 8)

I hope it serves you well Roco :)

This cleft is indeed gorgeous, you won't ever get this for £290 I'm sure!

willow cleft based on density. Forgive for appearing a bit thick but wouldn't you want the lightest cleft on most occasions?
Title: Re: B3 bespoke
Post by: roco on October 19, 2012, 04:35:58 PM
No as he offered me lighter clefts but would have made this size bat in 2lb12 and too light for me so I chose heavier cleft

You ask what specs you want in what weight and he works out what density that will take and may like with me offer a few clefts with varying density and tell you what weight they will come out at them you choose

Nice looking bat Roco, looks like you need a bigger rubber

Cheeky boy mike some of us just can't fill them ;)

It's a Guinness grip

I'm starting to see the halo likeness but I designed this on the computer without thinking of that but its turned our a nice shape due to full back

Haha

Guinness grip? I was expecting a black grip with a white head?

Is the bat flat or dome pressed?

My apologies, I thought the white bit was the handle, hence my comment about the small rubber

Yeah but only 1 will be used as font like flitting between

1 match 1 spare

So tough choice as both pick up light for my bats anyway haha

Maybe when you use it you'll get possessed by viv himself at the crease, wouldn't fancy being a bowler if that happens!
