Well after a good chat this morning with who I'd consider to be a decent mate in the bat making world i felt inspired to have a day behind the blade again.
As some of you know i'll be soon making bats for my own company but have made a few personal bats each with ladies names starting with Edna, Gertrude, Joan and so on...
Well I think this could be my last personal bat in Mabel, an old school classic with my own twist. I'ts a way of saying thanks to the guy that got me making in the first place and the chaps that encouraged me to do more. And as a mark of respect to those that can... no talk of edges please, this is all about the performance not who's the longest in the shower. 8) ;)
So here she is... Mabel. 2:10 slim and plenty in the rear. I'll get some clearer images up when we see daylight again.

Bit Reflex? Or is the profile more traditional, couldn't quite see

looks nice mate, lovely grains, is there any benefit to a square handle????

I stand by it, in that every bat i use (aside from the spartan) has it... It keeps the bottom hand that little bit more passive, but when you need to grip and use the bottom handle you have massive control. It was simply the shape that my hand made with forefinger to thumb... it got used on a lot of bats and even the bat that won best on test at AOC last year... i think they called the two tier style unusual but comfortable.
I will say it took a while to get the dimensions spot on, but its just something that very individual... Not really marmite but it's changed how i grip and set up bats now.

Couldn't honestly tell you, as i have never seen one in the flesh. But not my intention... if it hints at anything its an original distinction. The edge style and toe is different though.

Nice profile.. How is the pickup, the sweetspot seems pretty low.. More like M&H original low ?
-
lovely work. there is a bit of a old skool distinction/mjolner/reflex going on, but that is a complement!

Mabel looks a very nice profile :)

You'll have to get rid of that spartan then ;)
Looks to have a nice fat beep cool old school

This was the proper distinction, before trends in edge size spoiled a very good bat and all the names had to change to accommodate the influx of perceived bigger bats. the original low is still very concaved, as some will know im not a huge fan of taking wood from the area a player hits... unless hit of the edge a lot? :D all the spin in the world will not convince me otherwise. i do like some new bats and progression is good... but the cricket bat first and foremost is a tool to get a job done.

The pick up is ok, not a featherweight but it can from a decent density cleft so the finish weight should have always been around 2:10. the nature of the style means it'll pick up at its weight but in flow and swinging it fills you with confidence... One of the lads here can test it and im more than confident that it'll perform admirably.

Thanks Buzz and Pacman, its appreciated as always...

Ha ha, you're a good man Roco but that Spartan will never ever be sold... plus its really nothing as a bat other than its sheer size. I might make you a bat one day and i reckon it'll get your attention! I can build one bigger than the Spartan. :o ;)

You have my attention dear sir
Just like a lump me although I'm using light 2lb14/15 bats at mo I've found after weighing them
-
I love the edge profile. Big edges are a waste of good wood, put the muscle in the swell. Great work.

Yeah thats not to far off my old match bat at 2:14... but i can and could make you a lh/lb that has a sensible ish pickup and balance at around 3:5 to 3:8 that would be as big as my Spartan but not so compromised. It's all in the future but if you ever want to go down that route just look me up.

Well I think you know what got me fired up to make her... cheers buddy!

M-Dog, bring Martha along with you when we hook up in November - I shall bring Shoulderless Sharon (she's square too!) and Ugly Betty II and we can have right old slappy time!

Do you want me to bring some biscuits too? ;)
I may have one or two bats you won't have seen before to have a play with.

Thank you very much and also thank you to all those that commented and PM'd interest.
Mabel has a new owner now and seems to be over the moon about it too.
Once again guys I really appreciate the comments, you'll be seeing a lot more of my work throughout next season but a little more modern and progressive. Probably not everyones cup of java but if you know anything about my work its function first... no compromise.
Cheers guys.
