Title: Sponsorship Company, what connotations does it have for you?
Post by: Cover_Drive on October 31, 2012, 06:31:38 PM
As we all know Gray Nicolls and Gunn & Moore are what I would call prodigious because they are one of the oldest, eminent and so on.

When I see a player who has been sponsored by likes of Gray Nicolls and Gunn & Moore the first thought that comes to my mind (assuming I have no background information about player) is that "This player must be a classy and a superb batsman"

For me Gray Nicolls and Gunn & Moore are highly esteemed brands because they have sponsored worlds great over the years.

When I see a person sponsored by Boom Boom first thought that comes to my mind is that "Oh he is a slogger"

What does a company sponsoring a player symbolize to you?

BoomBoom is the same for me lol I think it's because of the Afridi connection.

GN - Class, with Cook and Strauss being bat's I've seen using them.
Woodworm - I used to associate with Freddy so more slogging.
GM - I remember seeing Tres and Vaughan using these when I was growing up so a bit of a mixed bag really, the class of Vaughan and the hard hitting of Tres.

Robin smith with GN and Alex Stewart with a kook bubble are my best memories. What I'd  like to know is, do they make the brands money? I'm sure makers like mat at H4L won't mention figures but I wonder what getting Mr Mahmood use his bat did for his firm and more importantly his reputation.?

And yet, in parallel, Graeme Swann with GM, Bres and Jimmy with Slazengers and other eminently less well skilled batsmen with others...

I'd associate Gower with GN, especialy the four scoop, than OC. He only used OC for the last couple of years of his career.

Yep, Gower with GN, Botham with DF and Gooch with SS. To be honest GM always reminds me of my school days when the the school bats were all GM 'Cannons' (anyone remember them?

Not quite on topic, but as a bowler, as soon as I see a guy with matching Pads, Gloves and Bat, I instantly assume sponsored and raise my game slightly!

Ashes 05, KP had a woodworm, and I also think Freddie did to.
Ian Bell has just gone from Adidas to Kook.
KP now with Adidas.
Cook and Strauss GN
I grew up loving GM, will always have one, but now I'm with Laver

Once a player is truly established I think it is purely down to the money, what might be interesting is what did they use on their rise?
And also what would past players like Beefy play with now?
Willowstix Spitfire / SAF Hades / H4L Tempo hmmmmm.....

I'd love to sponsored by SAF or Laver

i definitely agree on the Boom Boom. Though havent seen many people using their bats in our league (Essex).

have to admit, when i see people using the high priced GN or GM, i tend to automically think they must be good players. however, that is not always the case!

personally, have always held CA close to heart. ever since Inzi first used one.
