i prefer a normal bat tbh!

but if i had to choose it would be the laver & wood

Laver and Wood I'm guessing don't have the longer handles in stock so their blade is 19" compared to the Mongoose's 15".

Similar but not an exact copy, with the science and work that's gone into the original Mongoose I'd choose that rather than an attempt at an imitation.

Yeah I spose. The Laver & Wood is no Mongoose tbh. But the Laver & Wood does look nice ..

from an aesthetic point of view it would be the l&w.

With all these different bats being brought into the game i think the game of cricket is getting worse as the technology gets better cricket is a traditional game wich in my eyes should be played with normal equipment.

They both just look like fielding bats to me.

I made one on Saturday it does funnily enough look like a fielding bat, it caused a bit of a stir at the club and almost everyone held the bat lower down the handle....  Not used it yet, Nets tonight, I'll see if the splice stays in  ;D

Am i right in thinking that it is possible to get two bats out of a single cleft with the 20/20 bats yet still charge astronomically high prices........i am suprised they didn't think of this earlier!!!
i am very much a skeptic of this new bit of 'technology' - Norb, have you followed a similar design to the mongoose and laver, or have you added your own special twist?

I'll measue a cleft when I go and take some pics and let you know

I'm pretty sure you can't, although you could get cheaper clefts which maybe had knots at one end or chunks out of them. Or even order shorter clefts.

I dont think so either as I made a 19inch one

fair enough, i stand corrected! But i still believe this is an expensive gimmick - having said that, if i went out and scored 50 or 100 with it i am sure my opinion will change, it will be interesting to see what type of feedback these bats get when they have been used a little more extensively in the professional and amateur ranks.......let us know how you get on with it at the nets!

I thought the idea was it was meant to have a long handle?
Title: Re: Lavers "mongoose"
Post by: SAF Bats on June 01, 2009, 02:55:28 PM
? Total Blade length is 19inches

edit: I think I know what you are saying.... It is a normally spliced bat but edges taken away so the handle is thicker because of that...

It is a normal mens handled cleft shaped into a prototype mongoose copy I did on saturday morning as I wanted to see what it was like! And yep I make San Andreas Fault bats...

Do you think the bat is as powerful as it says on the tin ;) is it worth buying? Played with it yet?
Title: Re: Lavers "mongoose"
Post by: SAF Bats on June 01, 2009, 04:29:39 PM
Not yet I'm using it tonight in nets.... Thing is mine is different because it is spliced conventionally therefore the wider handle area at the shoulder... If I've still got a handle in the bat after nets tonight [:D] I'll let you know... As I'd imagine everyone is going to want to have a go.

Have a word with James and see how his is done... Also have a word with the guys at mongoose and go with whomever you feel most comfortable with.... Both guys will reply to emails by my reckoning.

Norbs, how did it go?  And how popular was it...
Title: Re: Lavers "mongoose"
Post by: SAF Bats on June 01, 2009, 09:53:23 PM
Ok, popular yep we had a hoot, but heavy you swing and it feels like it is going to dislocate your arms....  I'm going to fiddle with mine and see what I can do to sort it out a bit....

One thing though you are drawn into the big hits and defence seems to go out of window.... we found it is best start off with your normal bat, get your eye-in then change....

Ps: handle stayed in :D

good news about the handle......never doubted your bat making abilities anyway! I thought this might be the case regarding defence......considering, in my part of the world anyway, that the wickets are hard at the moment and there is a fair bit of bounce i find myslef using more of the bat than i would say on a lower slower wicket - meaning the smaller 20/20 bat would be harder to use for us lesser players!

If you get your eye in with your normal bat and then play with the cut down one then you barely notice the difference you just play your normal game.  That said if you get a ball that bounces up you tend to have slog at it a-la baseball.  I must say though it was great fun peppering the out field from the nets.  I'm quite luckly as I've made one, admittedly it is different, but at the right price a fun bat to have in your bag and yep you could potentially use it in a match... I know mine is going to be in a local T20 tonight if the guy gets a run out with the bat.
