Inspired by a debate in an other thread, which players did you really not rate when they got picked for International honours, but then pleasantly surprised you by turning into one of the first names on the teamsheet.
I'll start with Paul Collingwood, who I thought was a great one day player, but wouldn't cut it in tests.
And I'll add Mark Butcher, who when he first came into test cricket as an opening batsman I though was a bit pants, but given a second chance at number 3 I thought developed into a very solid performer for England.
And then I'll go with Craig White, who I thought was a poor choice in his earlier career, but at the end of his international career actually looked up to the job.
Who else?

Not so much when they got picked for international cricket, but a few overseas players who have been very unimpressive for their counties...
Vernon Philander when he was at Middlesex was pretty woeful.
Imran Tahir is still spoken of reverentially at Yorkshire for the abject horribleness of his two performances for us.
Paul Harris at Warwickshire was another - could not believe it when he jacked in a Kolpak contract beause he was going to play tests!
Much as I like the bloke, Matthew Hoggard seemed a terrible selection for England at first. Of the current side, how many people really expected Trott to do what he has as well!
-
on todays performance faf du plessis!
-
agreed. seems to be a South African thing!
-
King of Spain
Made a career out of not turning the ball and being handy with the bat. At least Ash turned 1 or 2 in a million unlike Paul Harris.
I suspect KOS biggest strengths, eeking out limited ability, good organisation and common sense, may lead him to England Coach or running the game one day.
-
Alan Mullally did ok I guess
David Warner saw him a few times in 07/08 look anything other than a test cricketer a bit more like Clayton Lambert type but he has grown into a fine test match player
-
this topic is crying out for a "totally overrated that never came good" alternative!
-
oooh, that could be fun. Can I start with RAVI BOPARA!

Clayton lambert
Alan Igglesden
Mark Ealham

Oh and
Carlton palmer
-
The aussies have a bit of a knack of it recently.
Nathan Lyon looked very average at first but seems to be settling in to a reasonable bowler.
Clint Mckay looked awful the first few times i saw him bowl but has a good one day record
and who honestly thought Shane Watson would make such a good top order bat
-
Xavier Doherty stealing a living
-
And yet at the other end of the spectrum they have the boy Khawaja!

I'll raise you Beau Casson and throw in a Bryce McGain there!
-
Spin twins I always thought it was us picking naff players but looking at it
Kamran Akmaal as a keeper
-
Oh and
Carlton palmer
I'll raise you a Geoff Thomas . 1 on 1 with the Keeper in an International and he hammered it in....-to the corner flag lol

But Joey Barton and Chris Powell will still be worse...
-
what about Mick Lewis
-
It good to talk like this proper forum stuff
We need a worst international eleven thread
-
Tredwell for the better this time. I think he's average and still do, but he's never let England down.
He's also miles better than Lyon. Lyon was outbowled by Clarke yesterday. Clarke didn't need the "Jeff" mystery ball, he just turned the thing!

Don't hate Geoff! Absolutely cracking bloke, and a Palace hero to boot. Not to mention all his charity work for Leukamia research...

Not hating him, sure he is a lovely guy but as an England international, bit of a fail :-(
-
How about an Ashes - worst England XI vs their Aussie equivalents!

Most palace players that have played for england have been... Although Wilf Zaha needs to be given a go!
-
I think Swanny has probably exceeded expectations - and by a vast amount. Came in as support spinner and became indispensable.
-
Hashim Amla and Mohammad Hafeez.
-
Nick Compton... not good enough for Middlesex 2's and now touring with England...
-
Monty - Never thought kid got anything.
Well costing us(India) test matches - probably series here. :D
-
I'm surprised nobody has said Kevin Pietersen! I've followed him from when he was at Warwickshire but we released him as we has Troughton and Bell at the time....
I always new he was class but some may have doubted him
-
after the Sherminator ashes, not many would have predicted Bell's record to date

I still think he's rubbish. Probably the most overrated player in world cricket. Alongside most of the Indian batsmen obviously! ;)

I wouldn't say that he was over rated at all. Can play all 3 formats at the highest level.
Opens in ODI's, Can bat from 3-7 in tests, Not a bad record either.

Ian Bell's first innings at the Oval in 2009 was a proper knock. Set-up the match just as much as Trott's 100 in the second.
-
What ever happened to jeet
He would put a good Indian case across
Yuraj is borderline
-
Nick Compton... not good enough for Middlesex 2's and now touring with England...
played for Yorkshire Twos last season!
-
Dilshan was a crap spinner batting at 7,8,9 when he started. No one could've predicted his career. He batted below Russell Arnold....

But not a record that should engender comparisons to the greats of the game....if you listen to some people they think he's a cross between Bradman and Tendulker with a bit of Lara thrown in. In reality he's a run of the mill middle order international batsman who, not for the first time in his career, is struggling for his place in the side.... :D
