Title: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: Buzz on December 06, 2012, 07:14:46 PM
Hello - this is the new homer drool thread

We are a custom bat forum and up until recently have been clean faced bat snobs. I would like to bring a little of that back.

here are a few examples of what I want to see more of please:

Join the fun please.

If I don't think the bat is up to it I may arbitratily black mark the picture (at the suggestion of Mr Custom-Bats himself ;))

this thread should be, in investment banking terms, the flight to quality.

nice start, I am a big fan of the bradman.

3 bats i wont be forgetting anytime soon. Had the pleasure of owning and using that Legend for 2 and a half seasons. Handle finally went this Summer and sent it to grays for a thorough refurb. Sold it to a cricket acquaintance the day it came back.

I particularly like the really battered and loved bats which still have lovely grains showing. most of the bats floating around this forum don't get used enough.

No it's a 5* Hattori from Matt I got around 18months ago. Apparently it weighed 2.5 before it was dressed and in my opinion was very close to being graded LE. Matt told me at the time he didn't want to let it go ;) You can safely say I'm pleased with it.

I may have missed the whole Hammer chat, but that really is rather expensive for a newish brand. It doesn't look that good either. Sure they are lovely bats, but just seems a bit...dear

Forgive me mate, I was looking at the couple behind the platinum and assumed they were all the same price! Sorry, the one at the front looks nice, but just expensive considering when you look around the gems you find posted on here for a lot less. Don't want to turn this into a Hammer knocking thread, just thought I would comment Paul

The look decent sticks, and I like the branding a lot, bit pricey for my tastes, but then being on here leaves you completely spoilt, I've picked up a few crackers for sub 120

I imagine your prices are driven by the client themselves, but you seem to know a fair bit about the cricket retail business, so if you think you can shift them, you probably will fella :)

Lovely looking bat that one.

I think Marcus's (M77) stunning decals add around £75 to the value, if not more.  Top drawer stuff - I've seen a lot of bats, and a lot of decals, but none better than these Platinum ones.  For those who agree with me about how stunning they look, how does this affect your perception of the price?

Difficult comment this, because while a bat with beautiful branding does make a difference, nothing adds that much for me.

As the blank bat guys have shown it is quality of product that gives me the best value.

I love the branding on many bats, chase, gm, salix, Newbery, choice, h4l and more, but it is the bat which matters far more for me.

Personally I don't think stickers (decals) should add any price to a bat at all, it's all about the quality of the stick. I do like the front sticker on the Hammers, very clean looking and not to busy, not personally a fan of the back, but I know a lot of other people would be.

This was quickly snapped when Asad posted a picture of it as a Christmas present for the youngest brother, who is just starting to play cricket. Gave it a little drink as it seemed pretty dry, and will scuff it up and wrap it in time for Christmas. 8) Check out how straight the grains are on the back too, it really surprised me that this was a 250, as it responds really nicely off the mallet too! The finishing isn't great though, but it might just be like that for the lower grade Kooks!

Haha sorry about that Dave! :-[ It does respond nicely off the mallet! A nice crisp clean sound which I am very impressed with. I will be scuffing it in the next 2 days after the oil has seeped in and dried, then I'll test it out with a ball. 8) It does have a LOT of concaving, which I suspects is what gives it the feather-like pick-up and weights for the size!

I've got a Powerbow Strauss LE from 2012, i considered not using it, but its such a weapon that it became my Saturday match bat.

Supremes are the top bat mate ;) - Good enough for Richard Levi!

LE is the second bat down, only about £20 cheaper than a supreme which is a bit of an odd price point, we've sold the 3 LE's we got this Summer. Might have more coming in Jan/Feb, but may just stick with Supreme and the 3rd best bat, the Fireblade as the price points make more sense to me.

No worries mate, the info B&S have out there is pretty ropey/contradictory/out of date, part of the reason why i'm trying to persuade my friend to let me get more involved with handling the UK side of things.

Supreme is indeed their best bat, we sell it for £230.

Thank you, I'm not in a position to comment as it could and should be viewed as a bias. I'll simply say i feel pretty proud of them and I have had no complaints so far from those that already have them.  :)

Title: Re: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: manno on January 01, 2013, 01:01:47 PM
Thanks guys, yeah shes a beaut and yeah an Aus Legend.

From memory i asked for :

- mid middle if that makes sense
- slight bow
- 2.8-ish
- 16+ grains

I also got an off the shelf which i sold before using (youll see that if i start my thread). But what i got with the custom which youll see is a slightly different profile than the stock legend. Anyway, enjoy!

Heartwood is generally harder wood than the lighter wood.

willow is very much a soft wood.
Title: Re: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: essexarsenal on January 30, 2013, 08:46:00 AM
Heartwood is the darker section of the middle of the tree where the sap has moved out towards the outer section. It makes no difference to the bat in itself but due to tighter grains being popular it is more commonly found now as the inside cut of a cleft will generally have more grains.
Title: Re: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: lukemannionzimbabwe on January 30, 2013, 03:03:14 PM
Does having heartwood on a bat affect the performance ?is it that red colour on the bat ?
Title: Re: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: ajmw89 on January 30, 2013, 03:41:52 PM
It is the red colour.  Supposedly it is stronger/more durable, so is ideally suited to being on the outside edge of a bat.

Actually I think heartwood is more brittle, not harder. So it should be on the least used edge if that makes sense.

Pretty sure thats the opposite of what most bat makers say. Heartwood I have been led to believe should be on your outside edge due to its hardness.
Title: Re: The Homer Drool thread.
Post by: lukemannionzimbabwe on January 30, 2013, 05:13:32 PM
Is it harder on the edge so you don't nick it ? Do you think bat makers use it as a ploy ?
