Title: Favourite Childhood Bat that you never owned?
Post by: ItsJustCricket on December 18, 2012, 12:06:38 AM
Interested to know the ones that got away...

What were your favourite bats from your childhood that, for whatever reason, you never actually owned?

I would say mine was the Kookaburra Bubble...

I started playing "hard-ball" cricket in 2009, prior to that I played tape-ball throughout my life.

So if you consider 2009 as my childhood then its Gray Nicolls Powerbow (amazing profile really!)

However, my actual childhood was spent playing tape-ball cricket and then there was this Wills King bat which we (me and my brother had). It was amazing but then I broke it after getting bowled thrice on three consecutive deliveries, that day still haunts me as it was lovely bat! I'm remorseful when I think of that day..

Have to agree with the Bubble as my uncle had one and it was an absolute gun, just wish kook went retro and redid one or the Gold crown as i would buy both in a heart beat, also really liked the Gray's sabre and millenium but the kook's were top for me, worst bat was the school gray nicholls powerspot with the poly face i never realised how a piece of wood could kill a ball dead know matter how hard u try to hit the ball

I didn't own that many bats as a kid, I had a slaz v500 - the claret and blue one, pretty nice bat and was still going strong for a bit of garden cricket until last year.

I always wanted a massive hunts bat when I was younger, a lot of other kids had them and they were huge compared to my slaz that I had.

Gray Nichols Dynadrive - this is about to change...
Slazenger V100 5 Star - with old school stickers as used by Viv Richards, then Mark Waugh
Duncan Fearney Magnum

These were all bats that were around when I was at school. Loved the Dynadrive, though the V100 looked classy, but when I used my mate's it was terrible and another friend had a Magnum. It picked up like a railway sleeper but went like a bishop in a brothel.

Surridge Turbo 333.  I would say a Kookaburra Bubble, which is the bat I would most like to see released as a Retro edition now, but the Turbo was the doggies when I were a lad!

I think I owned most of the bats I wanted as a youngster.

GN100 Scoop
County Clipper
GN Powerspot Classic LE
GN Elite LE
GN Ultimate 1000 LE

The only other bats I remember admiring were the SS Jumbo & Turbo

I copied my favourite player back in the day... David Boon

It picked up like a railway sleeper but went like a bishop in a brothel.

played a village game a couple of years ago when on holiday with the Missus and had to use kit from the team store.  In amongst which was a Magnum that weighed about teh same as your average railway sleeper and was the colour of straw that had been trampled in mud....

...never seen a cricket ball fly off the face as well though!

One kid had a GN Scoop 2000 at our club when I was a junior and I remember being amazed when I first saw it. One I also remember wanting was a Hunts County Clipper which went really well.

I tried to buy one of those in about '98 but Hunts had stopped supplying them because the honeycomb kept cracking and falling out.

Surridge Turbo 333.  I would say a Kookaburra Bubble, which is the bat I would most like to see released as a Retro edition now, but the Turbo was the doggies when I were a lad!
Another mate (who was our opener) had one of these. I remember the toe getting wrecked on a wet pitch. It was another like the magnum, railway sleeperesque in pick up but amazing performance.

It was the Dynadrive for me, which I've now rectified! I had a V12 and a DF magnum, both went beautifully.  Prior to that I think I was using a G&M with green and blue stickers, but my memory doesn't go that far back! :(

Loved all those bats. One "top end" bat I did manage to own was a Symonds Tusker Grand Monarch. A local sports store was selling it for AU$100, when most top end bats were going for AU$250. So I snapped it up. This was the model used by Mark Taylor. It too was a railway sleeper that packed a punch.

my bro had a kook big bird model. absolutely massive and weighed nothing. faced cracked up pretty quickly but it flew until the day it died. lasted about 5 years then we turned it into a middling bat.

i had a old gm cannon, bottom heavy but pinged, also went through a GN phase with a stonker of a 5 star millenium, a rapier and a carbo longbow.

I'm pretty sure Viv Richards used this when he first went to Slaz, before the V100 5 Star came out.

I wanted a Powerspot because that what David Gower used in the late eighties. By the time I got to own my first 'proper' bat he'd moved to Open Championship, so ended up with one of those, but it wasn't the same.

I did finally get one later in life, but only after they'd added the red arrows to the graphics on the back, so again, didn't feel the same.

Maybe your memory is a little hazy, or they fixed the issue, because i had two Modulus' between 2002 and 2005.

I remember trying to buy it (and more importantly where I was living at the time) and the supplier spent a long time on the phone with me regarding the issue. Presumably they fixed it, but my attempt was definitely when the Modulus was in its early years. They probably did fix it. The supplier ended up sending me an (much more expensive) Insignia because they couldn't get the Modulus from Hunts.

How did you find it? I have never been able to source one in good condition.

I live about 20 minutes drive from Hunts, so i always go straight to them. Most of my friends at school had one (or an insignia) before we discovered the joys of online retail (with no cricket store anywhere near us until vitas cricket opened 2 years ago, hunts was the only option) and we all hopped on the gray nics bandwagon.

I really liked it, really nice pickup, much smaller than the Dynadrive (the new one anyway) in terms of profile, it was a tocuh players bat, Insignias were for the guys who gave it a slap.

I still have one of them somewhere, but its in terrible shape!

I had my Insignia for ages. It lasted for 9 years, but I gave it to the Courtney Walsh Foundation in Jamaica after it developed a crack that stemmed from the toe, 3/4 of the way up the bat. It weighed about 2lb10 and was absolutely lovely. That's my one I miss :(

Hunts have the Caerulex as a 'retro' offering, but i've told them on a couple of occasions to get the Insignia back in the range. Might get them to make me one as a one off, not sure if they'll have any stickers left, but the shape alone gives you a strong indication as to what it is.

humm I had three original caerulex's (sorry for posting this twice in quick succession) the new one was Tim2000s, they were lovely.

I have thought about this for a while but the only bat I really wanted was a GM diamond, but I got a Maestro instead, so I can't complain!

My first bat was a Gray Nicolls Crusader Ace. It weighed nothing, had edges no more than 5mm. A real nudge and nurdle bat.

My fave bat as a colt was by M&M Maestro. I recall seeing the ad's "Contoured edges" and drooling. It was a machine. I kept it way too long and was still using it playing in the Army alongside my SS Turbo.

I was obsessed with Dynadrives as a kid but never bought one. Used a mates all the tIme instead! This probably explains why I have 5 or 6 retro ones in the garage which i would love to restore to their former glory!

I was a bit of a proto CBFer in those days, would buy a bat then sell it on when another one took my fancy - probably spent all my paper round ££ on bats, and all my mates had my old kit! Had a Kook Gold Crown and matching gear (Alec Stewart clone, without the talent!), DF Attack, GM Diamond, Powerspot (which was awful), V100, Maestro, Newbery Cobra (beast) and a few others I think.

Ok here's a bat which I bet not many folk would have heard of, a Duncan Fearnley Classic. Basically a big colt. I had one of these.
what I really wanted was a Fearnley 405 or a Rapier as I loved the sword sticker on the spine.

I reckon for me it was quite a few,

Kookaburra Bubble, probably because Alec Stewart used one. Although I think these were made by Crown Sports especially for Alec.
Millichamp and Hall Signature
Gunn & Moore Autograph, as used by the likes of Steve Waugh, before I realised that these were probably millichamp bats.
Gray Nicolls Optimum, as used by Robin Smith.
