Evening guys, i was just looking through my clubs averages for last year and got my thinking about all my innings of last year and that moved onto my best innings and then my best shot so thought i would share and then we can all remember out best shot of 2012.
Mine was league game in July against Bromley when i sent the highly rated off spiner for 6. What made it my favourite shot was that he was bowling really tight to well set field so i watched and played dead bat to first 5 balls of the over then played inside out and put him over cover for 6. What made this even better was this onr shot seemed to put him off a little and he then bowled a few loose balls to allow us to tick score board over and eventually win.
Anyone elsa care to share favourite shot of 2012?

got to be putting our mouthy slow left armer into the sightscreen in a club day...

Having not had a 50 for season & half dispatched straight six to bring up 50, went on to be 98 not out(robbed of 100 penultimate ball signaled 4 ambled single but fielder says not gone). Pitch was a s***hole i was swearing getting hit on gloves.

Last year was my first proper season playing for a long time and so i never made it past double figures, which is a good learning curve as i intend to train and practice more and more.
My best shot was a punch of the front foot through cover past 2 fielders who just stood and watched it rocket between them, reason it was a my best shot 1 it was only my 2nd four of the season and two most important their left arm seamer took 6 of our wickets in the game.
small mercys but atleast i backed myself to play the shot,

can i ask what the things i need to learn are in regards batting longer to make the scores like yourself is it a training thing or just getting plenty of time in the middle

It's been a concentration thing for me plus lots of net practice. I used to be a fairly useless batsman, in 2006 and 2007 my average was 6, with a bit of work my average for 2011 and 2012 was mid 30's :)

A couple spring to mind that I can't choose between in amongst all the horrible ugly shots I've played. Hitting a fellow forum member for a big 6 over midwicket out of the ground onto a garage roof. Hitting a big 6 over square after playing and missing a lot and taking a bit of stick, their team told the bowler to drop it short - I told them they asked for it when it went for 6.
Maybe the one that I think I'd like to replicate was actually a cover drive in pre-season nets, it was one of those shots that just felt so good and given how I bat cross line a lot isn't one I play well. Ideally I'd like to hit more like that and less over cow - definitely something to work on in nets, high elbow and all that. In my mind I was Ian Bell for just one moment - then I reverted to normal.

My best innings was a first team game against a side who at the time were flying high. Their left arm bowler was swinging it in really well and I was just leaving, defending and punching him through midwicket. Eventually their capt realised I actually like lefties bowling at me and changed to a 'spinner'.
After an over or two of sighters I preceded to sweep him down the legside from outside off stump. This forced their third man 9he was bowling an off stump line) to move to Fine leg. Of course, all I did was played a reverse sweep. This was jeered by their team. A few balls later I did it again and eventually they moved a few fielders around. This had however knocked the spinner a little and he put a flighted ball down on middle to leg.. It went right over his head for 6 in a really well executed lofted drive. Best connection I had all season. Although I played other better looking shots etc I class this as my 'best' purely because of the situation and working a good spinner around the park and causing their capt all sorts of problems. Very much enjoyed.

Are you anywhere near the Cheltenham area? I've got my own bowling machine and I net at least twice a week so would be happy to have a joint net.. 3 or 4 hours (so about 1400 balls at least) training that one shot should set you up quite well!!

Playing a mens game when i was 15, their opening bowler was bowling rapid and had cleaned up both our opening batsmen. Fourth over i was in he bowled one right in my 'slot' full and outside off. Sweetly struck it back over his head right into the side screen for 6! Went on to make 58.

Thanks for the offer, very generous but I'm in Sheffield so not really within travelling distance. I'm planning to have a few coaching sessions pre-season to help get rid of the bad habits I've got. To be honest though I think most of my issues are just with shot selection and not watching the ball closely enough.

Last game of the season - 98* needing 4 to win and smashed it straight over long on for 6!! Won the game and brought up my 100 - happy days... :D

Playing for my Sunday team a kind of Kevin Pietersen flamingo flick over mid wicket for four. It just pinged of the bats middle and flew for four. I just felt in really good touch that innings.

Coaching will help of course. If you really think it's shot selection and simply watching the ball these things are more mental than anything. Just play the percentages, know what shots you are good at, bad at etc. Don't play anything you are not comfy with until you are on say 30 runs+. Just stick to what you know and if the ball isn't in those areas, leave/defend etc. Even in the ECB prem leagues bowlers aren't that good that they don't get bored with you easily defending and leaving and will stray into the areas you want them too. So the lower down you go in the league system the less patient and basically worse the bowlers are... more shots for you to pick off!

That was my worst shot of the season! One week I had just got in and a bowler bowled a low ish full bunger.. great I thought... easy runs to get me off the mark.. went to KP it right through midwicket and missed the bloody thing.. stumps gone..walk off..
Out to a crap bowler who produced a crap ball... Not chuffed but hey, crap happens. I hit him in the away game and his economy was 13 in the 3 overs he bowled before being 'removed' from the attack :).

This thread is perfect for those who love to talk about themselves ;) haha.
My best shot was off an away swinger, half volley which should have gone gracefully through cover, but I decided to hit it over cow

Always wanted to do that! we play a certain club every year (Sunday friendly) and there fat popus captain turns up in a new flash motor. We play time every year and apparantly as a long standing tradition they bat first. Bat all the way to tea and then normally for half hour after. Average score for as long as i can remember is 160 in about 4 hours. which gives us about 20 overs to get it. Now this may not seem like much of a problem except that fat pompus git is a bloody good slow left armer who bowls they whole way through. >:(
One day i will get his windscreen or even better on to bounce into the front bumber, CRACK, then rebound through the windscreen lol :D

If you applied that rule I think 90% of posts would fall foul of it :)

Wasn't against bradley stoke was it :)
-
My favorite shot was an ugly pull over mid off, terrible looking shot but it went miles :D
Worst shot was leaving a ball that jagged back onto middle, then doing it again the week after :(
-
facing a highly rated swing bowler (apparently) late cut through slips and gully for 4
-
A leg glance that I timed the pants off, over mid wicket and one bounce for four.
Plenty of lovely cover drives in there as well, but I'll got for that one

Whereabouts in Cheltenham do you net procricketer?

Stuey. He hasn't been seen since due to the embarassment.
Think we were all asleep by the time you got one of the square that day....

Cheltenham Leisure Centre on Tommy Taylor's lane. Indoor place. It's not too bad, bit bouncy but it's better than anywhere else I've found. I take it your close then?? My training partner has just let me down so I'm off for a 2 hour net and will use my auto feeder for the first time.. winner.. gonna see what the random mode is like :)

Away against Aythorpe Roding, the bowler was a young left armer who clearly rated himself. He was fairly sharp on a good deck and insisted on bouncing me when I first came in. After a couple of bouncers he pitched one up which I proceeded to stick straight back over his head for 6. Probably wasn't the best idea because more bouncers then followed lol

Opened the batting for the 2nds and had this huge guy about 6ft 7 chucking down some rapid deliveries which were swinging everywhere. Later in his third over, he bowled this shorter delivery which swung win so I moved to off stump and just flicked it over square leg for four to bring up 50. It was like a lofted leg glance. Went on to make 65.
