Title: Why do you have to bone a bat ?

I saw James Laver doing it in a video and beach cricket (attempt) to make a bone in an article :D i was wondering : Why would you bone a bat ? in James's video it looked like a finishing tool ... may an imformed individual please answer my question ? :3

It add a smooth finish to the wood surface as well as compacting it down

ok thank :) what do you mean by compacting it down ? as in a sort of mini knocking in effect ?
