Evening guys, i was at my dads house today and he gave me his old Duncan Fernley Magnum to get a refurb. I looked at this bat and it got me thinking. This bat was purchased in the very early 90's i reckon and it reminded me a lot of todays bats, quite chunky edges, minimal retro decals etc
So with retro bats making a huge impact in 2012 and the comming season what do you think will be the next must have like the Magnum was for my dad. Or the next big thing for us bat nerds?? We have seen huge edges, carbon handles, flat faces, retro so whats next.
Any ideas????
-
I dpn't know, but I'd like to see this Magnum, mate ;)
-
will get a pic up asap mate but i have no camera at present (lost on new years) >:(
-
For me it has to be handle technology
-
I think trends might go back to more traditional profiles ?

I'm definitely saving up for a custom bat-making day with you guys...
-
H4L tempo for sure!

100%
-
agree about the traditional bit although i'am against it.
i think drying technologies have possibly reached there peak size for weight ratio.
-
I don't agree with going back to traditional profiles as such, more of a compromise using larger edges but less concaving.
I used my mjolnir in the nets on sat, and although the pickup and middle were excellent any off centre hits caused major twisting in my hands.
Switched to a b52 and it was all gravy
-
Matt,
This is just a query - if traditional profiles are becoming the new vogue, what was the thinking behind dropping the Excel?
Thanks
-
Good question , I felt it wasn't a popular shape ,most buyers want a big profile . However I can still make it if required and may make a come back in the future if trends change
-
More CNC?
-
Odd profiles like the Newbery Tour, Boom Boom Arrogance and L&W
-
Its going to all be handle technology again! Once people get their hands on the Laver handle we will see a rush on them.
Failing that its going to be something like "carbon fibre gloves". Not quite a gimmick but not far off it!
-
better softs - newer materials that are lighter, offer better protection and are thinner.
more "retro bats" - the Kookaburra ridgeback/bubble
performance enhancing extras such as scuff sheets

Talking of which, Kieron, got any more of that "special" anti-scuff?

interesting..... You'll have to explain how this works tomorrow :)
-
Yes will do Adi.
-
I suspect it is effectively scuff sheet as laminate, but will await what Kieron has to say as i could be totally wrong...
-
Nothing wrong with them scuff sheets
-
It's the extra thick scuff sheet and the glue that performs in a similar way to a laminate. A few on here have tried them with some positive results.
-
Tim did you notice a difference in performance with the scuff sheet?
-
I haven't tried it yet. Just put an order in!
-
I have tried them thank you keiron
They play ok they are different bat played well not sure it was the scuff sheet thought but they are a quality scuff there double thick and decent
-
Yes agree Dave. At worse they are excellent scuff sheets but some have noticed a positive difference in performance.
-
I was always under the impression the thicker ones were detrimental to performance? They are spongy and absorb some of the energy. Plastics etc may have changed/improved though, so maybe they work.
-
It's a stiffish plastic not soft and spongy.
-
I expected things had probably changed.
-
So we have a few ideas of what will be the next big thing but which company do you think will be the first to bring something new and extreme to the market place?? Retailers may know this better but who d you think would take the next big risk??
Ie the Kookaburra Menace. Bloody awful IMO but I know there have been quite a few threads on this bat but I don't know of anybody that has bought one yet.

Would you consider a water resistant bat no different to any other bat an extreme innovation?
:o
-
If you could make a fully water resistant bat that would be excellent but hopefully there will be no need for it in the coming summer months
We love in hope lol.

-
Is that the things I'm making or the material chosen?
Obviously it's each to there own :)! If everyone liked the same thing then it would be fairly boring place.

That would be something! But a little beyond what i have learned... but i demonstrated (earlier than expected) something i had worked on to Custom Bats today. If the application can be made viable it'll be pretty cool not to fear a summer shower and watch the water run from the bat.
