Title: Decisions,decisions.....still undecided...any help much appreciated!!
Post by: ewan68 on January 10, 2013, 01:04:59 PM
 ???
Hope some of you can help me out...??
Am looking to buy a new bat and with no decent shops locally as well as MUCH better deals available online I have been
scouring the net for a while....
My current bat that I am replacing is a Bradbury Sterling that has developed a crack across the vack at the bottom of the splice..
With so many bats to choose from I am hoping for some really insightful advice to help in the decision making process.
I play for Tattenhall 2nd XI in the Cheshire County League and as of last year have become what I would describe as an 'aggressive' opener!
Style wise I like to score quickly and am happy to play off both front and back foot and all round the the squar, though weakest on the leg side from fine leg to mid wicket(am not as good as this make me sound!!  lol)
Am looking for a nicely bowed bat with big edges and plenty of willow weighing in at about 2lb 10oz
The sort of bats I have been looking at are SS Ton Limited Edition,CA Test 12000/15000,GN Maverick,Adidas Incurza Elite,Adidas Master Blaster Elite various 'custom made' and many more independent batmakers
Would be great if,taking all of the above,I could get some guidance that will help me make a final decision....
Thanks in antici......pation!!!
Ewan

your discription is screaming H4L or Bulldog at me, something with a mid level middle.  Not sure entirely why. As ever if you go for a custom option - the businesses on here have great deals and make lovely bats - choose the stickers you like and contact the firm!

welcome to the forum. I hope you have a nicely full wallet as it is about to be emptied as you buy 4 bats and 3 sets of new softs because you can't decide which you like the best ;)

Hi Ewan,

There are many boutique brands on this forum as well as ourselves that can make a bat completely to your own specifications at a cut of the price of the bats you have mentioned above. I would suggest emailing a couple of brands with your requirements and then you can see what they have to offer.

Buy them all and sell the ones you don't like on here! (once you reach the required post count of course)
In all seriousness, pretty much any custom brand on here should be able to give you what you want so, as buzz said, just pick the one with the stickers you like!

The SF Platinum is my favourite demo bat from our demo selection. I use it in our net more than customers who are trialling bats do!

SF profiles sound like the sort of thing you are looking for. Depends on price though mate, we have some lovely lower end SF's in stock right now for a great price.

I'd get a H4L tempo which is 2'10 in the shape off the old M&H distinction..... Not big edges but a lot off wood behind it

Hi mate buy a Salix. Either a strike of Falx that have been discounted heavily online or but the new wasp or torque range. You will need a little extra cash but the new pressing they have with there flat faced bats this year is exceptional. Always always get a quality product from Salix and always are gun bats.

If not H4L on here make some lovely bats if you want a forum sponsor. These are in my opinion great bats.

B&S come strongly recommended, you will not be disappointed!

The only SF's are those ones pictured in grade 3 at the moment, looking to test the market with them so only made a small order.

Hmm, well I am going to go against the grain and say that I think Blank Bats are the best, The one I have is an absolute gun, they ping from the word go, and as far as I can tell are absolutely bulletproof in the way they are made, fantastic bats, and all really good value for money.

Have seen numerous pics on here (plus Matt Prior in the recent test series in India) with bats that have 'TON' on the
sides/edges but are branded Reebok/MRF/Nike etc and in Priors case blank...
Are these all SS bats in disguise?
If so,would that suggest that they make pretty decent bats???

H4L 666 monster sounds like the bat for you mate - I can't recommend them enough. This is just a personal view but I'd never go for a mass produced bat. Since talking on here and seeing what quality comes out of the small company English bat maker I don't see the point.

The TON bats are SS bats. They offer very good bats to the pros they sponsor - in the IPL they almost cornet the market!
SS bat (like SG) get tens of thousands or more of clefts! So they will get superb clefts, decent clefts but also some not so good clefts - law of averages!
I have had a few SS bats and mine have all been decent. But there are other bats which I have found suit me better!
I think it's more about which bat or profile feels right for you! As long as the bat is pressed well and balanced and finished well, then it should perform.
But it's that feeling of confidence that a bat gives you when it feels perfect for you, that's the bat that's right for you fella!

There are lots of bats I could recommend for me, but they may not be right for you!!
I would agree with some comments on here though - H4L could make a bat in front of you and you could lift it and feel it at different stages so that it feels perfect at the end of the day. So all I would say is, if I were you...I would go visit somone like H4L who will make the bat for you!

Hi there - out of the bats you have mentioned in the last post, I would personally choose the Adidas Incurza Elite!
The one I had was light at 2'9 and not big edges, but it had a large middle and was crazy responsive!!!  :o
But don't dismiss some of the custom bats on the forum as there would be a lot of brands who could offer you a real gun of a bat! I can offer you advice on what is right for me, but to find out for yourself what feels good, it's best to contact a few to see what feedback you get?

I dont want this to come across in the wrong way but you need to try and make your own mind up.

There are numerous 'custom' bats makers on here which will produce you a bat just as good as any of the major brands you have mentioned. Have a look at all the different profiles and shapes available and pick one that fits your requirements - by the sounds of it your looking for something with a fairly 'mid' positioned swell and big edges.

My recommendation would be H4L but they are one of the only brand on here i have bought from so am kinda biased.

echo the above.
if you care more about the quality of how it's made and the quality of willow than the stickers or how it looks go for a smaller batmaker on here.
there's quite a few to choose from...

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the bat makers on here. Just find one you like the look of, or better yet try and find one near you so you can go and have a look and a chat with someone who knows cricket bats.

Reviews on here say they are all good basically, which is because they are. So just keep having a look around until one grabs your fancy.

I'd go to Jake. Online stockist can be unreliable, and once you add import duty, plus courier handling fees it won't be a bargain.

Am trying to get the best bat I can at the best value....but just find it hard to qualify/quantify.
Do I bite the bullet and spend £250+(more than I should),somehow decide on the best one around the £200 mark(more like my budget) ,find the best genuine bargain or take a chance on a cheaper option?

In my opinion (and the opinion of a few other guys on this thread) a forum sponsor is the way to go.
You can actually have a chat/dialogue with the guy who will be making the bat. That way you can get one as closely suited to your game as possible, rather than trying to pick a pre-made bat and make it work for you.

From everything I have read and experienced on the forum so far, the sponsors on here are great and willing to make you a high quality product for a great price.
You really can't go wrong with a custom/hand made bat.  :)

Is there nothing In the used section that's any good for you? Heres two that stand out, Bulldog pedigree plus £150? L&w bradman profile £160? These are absolute bargains.
Title: Re: Decisions,decisions.....still undecided...any help much appreciated!!

Or even my own for sale thread?

http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=20677.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=20677.0)

Kookaburra Blade 950 for £220 + FREE B950 Gloves is a particular bargain.

Online stockist should be describing the SF bat as a Players LE if its genuinely a grade 1. There would also be an indication of it being that model if there was a little black sticker with the words 'players LE' below the word 'Platinum' - but as there isn't, i guess its not such a bargain.

Ewan, the B&S Fireblade is still the bat i would recommend to you above all the others you have discussed with me. £180 for a 2013 Grade 1 cricket bat that wasn't made in Asia is not to be sniffed at.

Hi Ewan, I don't mean to be rude here, but you've asked about multiple bats in this thread without seeming to really know what you want, other than that you want to spend £200 roughly on the best that you can get.

You've provided everyone with the following information:

My current bat that I am replacing is a Bradbury Sterling.

Which suggests that you want something with a mid to low middle.

The reality is that you can spend ages poring over various websites and calling up many retailers, and still deciding on what you want, when the basis of the responses to this thread is that you will probably get the best value for money by speaking to one of the batmakers on here, identifying with them the profile that suits your game best (possibly send them profile shots of your Bradbury if that has served you very well), and getting them to make you something similar.

There are two questions I would ask you.

1. Are you desperate for a medium or well known brand of bat? Your considerations all seem to suggest that the stickers are quite important to you.

2. Do you have a good reason for not engaging with a batmaker who I am sure will serve your purpose better than online stockist ever will?

Thanks to everyone for all their comments so far(even if a couple are slightly pointed?!)
To try and answer a few of the questions/queries,I would like to clarify a couple of things....
As mentioned,I cannot see a 'for sale' section, but even if I could,I do not wish to purchase a second hand bat(don't think I need to explain that any further?)
I am not totally hung up on label/stickers,however,if 2 bats seem to offer virtually identical properties at the same price then I would prefer the one that is most aesthetically(sp?) pleasing.
The reason that I have looked at a number of 'branded' bats is that it gives a point of reference.
I am more than happy to go for a bat from one of the lesser known brands, and have looked at most of them(all the ones on here included) but am just struggling to guage exactly what to do..
How,for instance do I compare a Blue room to a Shark to a Fat Bat to an H4L to B&S etc
Added to that,my budget has a bit of flexibility which in turn make more choices available, hence the uncertainty...
Thanks,
Ewan

Following on from the link to Lukey Sports(Salix Pod),googled it to see if good deal and got this:-

If I was buying a brand new bat and had a flexible budget I would look no further than this opportunity right here. This is an incredible deal normally reserved for the pro's!

Thanks, but not sure what the costs involved might be...rather suspect that my 'flexible' budget would not 'flex' that far?!  :-)

if you're really unsure I'd guess that the best way for you to go is to take a trip to a shop and hold a few bats seeing what picks up and feels best for you...

I'd definitely rcommend a Blue Room bat, Rob will make it to whatever spec you want and for around the price you originally said £200. I've got one and am very happy with it.
Another one I've read and heard good things about that you may wish to consider is a Redback bat. Their Paradox bat won the Wisdens best bat a couple of years ago.

Based on what you said in your first post describing your batting style, my first thought was H4L 666.

If I was you I would contact Matt at H4L and see what he can do for you. Have not heard a bad thing about his bats and my H4L 666 is the best bat iv owned.

Thanks for that,as you will have noticed,a few people have recommended the H4L....but having been on their website I don't think I could stretch to that cost or justify it...
I did mail them in case they could offer  any discount but only offered me a toe guard and scuff sheet..:-(
They do look lovely though!

thats still good of matt to offer a couple of extras regardless of the cost of them. to be honest its a bit rude asking for discount from a company you have never dealt with. Why would you expect a company to discount their product for someone who sends them a random email? if you were a long standing customer then fair enough but he sells plenty at those prices so how does that benefit him?

i see no harm in asking for a discount. there is nothing rude in it. he has a budget and based on recommendations from people, he tried to get a bat in his budget.

there are bats available from matt for his budget but hes obviously trying his luck to get a higher grade bat for the price. IMO i think its rude to ask for discount on a something which is a set price. You dont go into Tesco's and say i only have £1 for something. i dont want your economy version, i want your tesco finest version but its too expensive. will you discount it down? Quite simple, if you cant afford it dont get it or get one within your budget.

Just to confirm other supermarket chains are available.  :D

In response to 2 of the  posts (Red Ink and the one after it)...
I agree that it is a bit cheeky to ask for a discount on a first transaction, however I would not call it rude!
My comment about not getting a discount from Matt at H4L was in no way a reflection him, their bats or on how nice I think they look!
As people will appreciate I,like most people, want to get the best bat/deal that I can for the budget that I have set!
If being a bit cheeky got me a significant saving then it would be worth it.
On that note,I have had replies/messages from various people that have had deals/discounts from one or two of the sponsors on here(including H4L).
Hopefully I will be able to finally decide and purchase over the next couple of days, seems the perfect weather for it!!>> ;)

No harm in asking for a discount! Although the best discounts tend to be offered rather than asked for!

As for bats, I would have a chat with Vitas about which one they think would suit your game. They've got the sticks in front of them so take the opportunity to tap into their knowledge and let them help you decide. Only heard good things about B&S bats so I'm sure either will be great....

Whilst I understand where you are coming from,I do not agree with your analogy at all!
This is a one off ,budgeted purchase within a very specific market, more akin to a house(I know....)
When purchasing a house you would very rarely offer the asking price and generally rarely pay the asking price!
By contacting someone direct I was just investigating the possiblity of discount so that I could make a balanced decision.
If discount had been offered it would have been remiss of me to have NOT looked into it.
Every business has the option to discount or not, depending on whether they are prepared to lower their margin in order to secure the sale!
Again,I must stress that none of my comments are a negative reflection on Matt or H4L!!!!!!!!

I completely agree with the house comment, as ive purchased one myself and an ex estate agent i know how it works, hence my comment on set prices. Houses are not set prices, they are asking prices, which its common knowledge and openly acceptable to haggle and offer less. Buying any product whether its bats, shoes, computers etc etc they in general are not open to negotiation. Yes its up to the brand if they choose to offer a discount thats up to them. maybe its how i read your comment that you "only got offered a scuff sheet and a toe guard for free"  :(. maybe rude wasnt quite the word but its more than cheeky to request a discount on a product because you cannot afford it. Anyway thats just my opinion.

I don't see any problem asking for a discount. It's a fair amount of money you will be spending with them, and if you get a discount and decent service you'll be more likely to spend money with them again. It's up to the retailer to decide if they want to offer anything...

I think a bit of fuss has been made over nothing here, there's no reason why you couldn't walk into Tesco (other supermarkets are available) and ask for a discount. They would just say no. If you're buying a TV, you'll probably ask them if they can throw in a Blu-Ray player at a discounted price of for free, or a TV stand or wall mounting thingy.

You don't ask, you don't get in this world...

I hope that this amounts to no more than a bit of banter.....don't want to be ruffling any feathers! :-[
There appears to be 2 schools of thought on this and no middle ground?
The question is not whether I can afford to buy any particular bat but whether I can justify the cost?!
That is why I came on here,to get as much advice as possible in order to make the most informed decision I can.
As is evident from many posts on this forum, unless you are in a position to purchase multiple bats the process of deciding which one to get is a really tricky one!!
Final point, there seems to be a culture of 'word of mouth' on here and many bats seem to be purchased on the back of one sale, hence a one off discount could lead to greater sales....
Anyway, moving on from this....any further advice would be great...
Thanks,
Ewan

Can anyone point me in the direction of some decent covers(preferably without a bat manufacturers name on it!)?
Thanks,

You can't host photos on the forum, doing so would be server intensive, the website would crash and would cost the admin loads in hosting costs.

Upload them to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or photobucket.

From there copy the direct link of the image and paste it in between image tags

These are image tags:

[img.] insert direct URL here [/img.]

but wothout the dots.

This bat has a Vitas sticker on it as requested...and today I have received 3 CBF stickers.
I also have on order a set of the Ayrtek stickers that Tom was selling on here plus a pair of Top Gun logo stickers (I know...) on the way...
Any suggestions as to where to place them...??!! ;)

I also have my Bradbury coming back to me this weekend so the stickers are to be 'shared'!  :)

I wouldn't be putting the Top Gun stickers on the bat... Invitation for "banter" when you get that duck!!!

Sounds like you should have bought a GN Maverick...
Gave it some serious consideration...but my love of individuality meant that I was unlikely to go for a GN......
