Hello all,
I am new to the forum and would be grateful if anyone could give me a couple of tips on my batting. I find that when I attempt to cover/straight drive quite often I feel my bottom(right) hand choking the grip and taking over, often leading to me miscuing the shot or not getting the power I should.
Are there any quick fixes to maybe stop my bottom hand being so dominant?
Thanks in advance!

I always hold the handle with my bottom hand with just two fingers and my thumb. Not sure if you could give that a go.
-
I've got an indoor net later so will give it a try, thanks mate
-
Try even 3 fingers an a thumb mate and see how that goes. Make a conscious effort to keep the leading elbow up nice and high so you can show the full face of the bat

I have the same issues, and have been working like mad on it.
I've just checked my grip, I use the following and it works for me, full use of thumb and index finger, and the tips of my middle and third finger, with a very relaxed grip, I find the power i need in drives can be generated without gripping too hard.
My coach had me playing with just the top hand last week for 10 mins:(
If you fully grip with your bottom hand, the mechanics of the joint make it difficult to play properly.
Good luck, and just try things until you are comfortable.
If you are netting you may get a whole heap of different deliveries, so I would use the opportunity to get some proper throw downs or ask the guys to pitch it up for you.

Yep yep that's what I meant about 2/3 fingers, I only really use the tips too, have done so forever and has served me well. Cover drive/straight drives are my strongest shots.

what about putting a thick spiral half grip underneath bottom hand?
I used to have the problem but my fix is not ideal (i broke a finger and ever since then have never had an issue)

At times it feels like I'm almost wrenching my wrist if I really try and go for it, ideally I'd have a go on a bowling machine but we don't have one at our current net facility. Thanks for your suggestions fellas I will look to try and have a more relaxed grip and if that doesn't work then I'll look at having a half grip at the bottom of the handle.
I think in the main that this problem stems from me having a golf background before getting into cricket.
Any more suggestions would definitely be welcome as I really want to sort this out lol

sounds like you are trying to hit the ball too hard. you have to "time" a drive, not smash it. think Ian Bell or Michael Clarke.
-
Had the intention of trying out a few suggestions tonight and then the weather ruins it and nets have been called off! Always next week I suppose...

Happy to see your post because same issues with me. Will give a try to some useful tips given by our expert members.

I have the same problem. I think trying to concentrate on usin top hand only is the way forward

There can be a whole host of reasons why the bottom hand takes over and without seeing any footage hard to know exactly which one it could be! for many the grip is too far removed from the orthodox V or O grip and this results in the hands competiting against each other. sometimes the bat path can result in the bottom hand taking over, for others falling over results in the bottom hand 'shovelling' the ball over mid wicket - and of course there are many many other reasons besides!
If someone bobble feeds the ball to you - can you hit it straight back to them with both hands on the bat? andthen with just top and then just bottom hand?
-
occasionally I do find myself falling over to the off-side a touch.
I'm not too sure actually, I'll give it a try at my next net and let you know how it goes.
Glad it's not just me who has this problem!

grip tighter with top hand and grip less with bottom hand an oval handle at the bottom will help as well

If your feet and head are in the right place at the right time you'll find that naturally your bottom hand will adjust and you'll play it with a a couple of fingers and thumb of the bottom hand holding the bat. If you're not quite 'there' and are looking to force it then there's a tendency to lean back and the bottom hand takes over.
Get a mate to feed you some throwdown half volleys in the nets and concentrate on leading with your left shoulder and keeping the ball on the deck. You'll find the top hand does start to take over as it should....

Try a sqush ball in your bottom hand glove, it will soften your grip to what some have suggested. Might sound odd but it does work. Good luck.
-
Yeah I heard about Gilchrist putting half a squash ball in his bottom glove when he got a ton in the world cup final against Sri Lanka, does sound strange but I suppose in theory it would weaken your grip with your bottom hand.
-
Pretty good insight. I have the same issue. I do really good with cut and pull.
Will try to align the Vs better and use couple of fingers and thumb of the bottom hand to hold the bat.
-
The squash ball trick really does work.
I used it for a fair few games last year when I felt my bottom hand was strangling the bat and it really helped.

Bat with soft hands

All these suggestions are good. Before tinkering with your grip etc try getting your leading shoulder around more and bending your knees into your drives. Your bottom hand can ruin things if you are front on or stand up as you hit it. If you get this right you can use as much bottom hand as feels natural for power.
