Title: Has anyone used a 3lb 3oz+ bat? Please tell me about your experience?
Post by: wasted_talent on January 23, 2013, 10:17:36 AM
Was just wondering if anyone had ever used a bat weighing more than 3lb 3oz? If yes, did they find the bat performed better due to the sheer about of wood on it? or does the weight not make any difference at all?

My heavy bat is 3lb2 long blade

A heavy bat has no benefit unless you can use it freely

A few people have had a hit with my bats but few can swing them effectively

Yes with the weight you get more wood so you don't need to lift bat up as high but if your slow with it not much point

More mass = more power with the same swingspeed.

However, for me I prefer a lighter bat to get more swingspeed. Heavier bats are more powerful due to the mass of wood, however if you can't use it - it's pointless

I had a 3lb 4oz bat that was destined for Ronni Irani, before he retired. Upside was anything you put effort into cleared the field. Downside was the pain the following morning from using such a monster. Used to feel like my arms had dropped off. I've also noticed a slow down in bat speed, anything above 2'12 in my case. That said the 3lb 4oz bat had a traditional profile and beautiful pickup which made it feel a little lighter. I eventually had the guys from Kippax shave it down to 2'13-14oz and they left the middle untouched. They shortened the blade a half inch and shaved the shoulders/handle, that was it - 6oz gone!.

I used to have a 3lb + bat, which when facing bowling on a slow, low wicket was awsome! Head down, swing through the line and watch it sail! Came a bit unstuck on som quicker wickets with a bit more bounce though!

If you're strong enough, use one mate. It's all relative. More wood on the bat obviously, but if you can't control the bloody thing then no point using one.

got a 3lb 4 B52XL, which absolutely flies.  Wierd thing is I never really notice the weight, only the lack of it when I use something too light!

thank you all for the reply
i think i'd only look to use it on slow wickets or when there is not much time left to settle in and the "slog" is on.

will have to go and try to pick one up at the local shop to see if i can manage it effectively before making a purchase i think.

what weight bat do you use at the moment. I've heard of Pro's going an oz or two heavier for ODI/T20. I think it it slows your bad speed significantly or restricts your shot choice (ie. you struggle to play cross bat shots), then it's probably too heavy.

Yer ive just had a blueroom swell 3lb 4 made up by RPC and is the best bat ive had by far. Pick up is fantastic and absolutely love the ping, big profile as well. :)(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BBDSySiCYAAiXd5.jpg:large)

I used Roco's 2 lb 15 ounces, custom CA 15000 Plus LE. It was longer blade and that bat pinged exceptionally well! Certainly better than lighter one which I compared with.

Had a 3lb 5oz county reflex in 2001. Edges were same width from shoulder to toe! It was immense! Still knocking about in th SY league I think!
