Title: Changing bats to suit pitches?
Post by: Steveo1000 on January 24, 2013, 12:57:12 PM
What are your thoughts on changing the bat you use to match the pitch conditions throughout the season?
Does anyone switch from a heavier low middle bat when pitches are low and slow, then switch to a lighter higher middle bat when the pitches are bouncier?
Do you think you should just pick a bat that suits your game and adapt to the conditions?

Is this a roundabout way of asking why so many guys on here have huge collections of bats?  :D :D :D :D :D
Just jestin' y'know  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Kind of. The club I moved to has a low bouncing deck so I've invested in a bat with a lower middle tendulkar profile - my Ayrtek. I still have a bat with a higher middle in my GM Icon+ and this has enough meat to adapt to most decks. If I'm on something really slow, where timing is an issue then out comes the Tempo. Likewise for big hitting the Tempo will be coming out.

The important thing is to stay within a comfortable weight range and have similar setup's on each bat. This helps you feel familiar with the bat. My weight range is 3oz between the long innings bats, the difference being the impact of pickup using a low middle (or lighter pickup of using a heavier but high middled bat). Both have oval grip setups and feel pretty similar to swing. The Tempo is a different beast for specific purposes, short innings/big hitting mode. I'm also going to net with it to train my muscles and improve swing speed on the lighter match bats.

:) it's a roundabout way of helping me decide if I should go down the route of having two different types of bat. Never have before this season and considering it.
Also just interested to know what people think on the subject as well.

I have been wondering why some of you have such a vast collection. And am feeling a bit left out. :D

I think if a significant amount of pitches play a certain way and your home deck plays differently enough that timing is an issue then yes it's worth looking at. If it's the odd game, then just borrow a bat. Training with a heavier bat or investing in a middling bat are also worthwhile ways of getting your bat count up  ;)

Ive used an older bat if we've played on a particularly wet track just because i dont want to ruin my match bat with damp

So what were people's opinions on the Crictech theory that no matter what pitch you played on a batsman would always look to hit the ball with the same spot on the bat? I found the evidence quite compelling but haven't tried it myself and they seem to have disappeared a bit from the forum of late. Also people are still talking about bats to suit pitches so does this mean that people are discounting their theory?

Is it just weight of the bat to take into consideration or does pressing have some art to play in it? I only ask as I've got a grade 1 bat that feels lovely against a hard ball coming onto the bat, but doesn't have that spongy feeling when i try to launch it to cow corner.

I used Crictech and I think the logic is fine - to a point. On a low deck you crouch more to compensate and play the ball in the same area on the bat. My GM Icon+ works according to crictech and does on most decks from experience. However, in some cases even the batsman can't compensate for the bounce ie. decks that are really low bouncing where back foot play is impossible. The crictech analysis might show a different middle profile if all the shots where front foot, as they are on some decks. I played a game at my new ground last season where I was bowled half tracker and it hit my on the foot! Having a lower middle makes sense on those decks.

If you do the crictech analysis, try and do it on your home pitch either first or as well as an indoor/artificial net.

Cheers Nick, that makes sense. May give it a go on an April pudding as well as an indoor net and compare the two

I had a wet weather bat, bad crack in the toe though.

It cost £20 from a team mate, had a lower middle which helped on a sticky pitch, and didn't want to get my expensive match bats wet

Thanks all, I think I've heard enough to convince me to buy a new bat. Which was the most important thing ;)

You should only ever need convincing to NOT buy a bat...

Buy 2? Then you get twice the "new bat feeling"

Just bought a redback paradox, so if I bought 2 I'd have three. Which is not necessarily a bad thing I guess?

I tried this last season. Used my H4L Hattori at home - low slow wicket. Then my 666 on bouncier tracks. Ended up averaging over 50 in the league. Definitely worth a go!

Stopping at 2 bats Steveo? Only stop once you get to double figures!  ;)

Tell me about it! I have stopped at around 150...but I'm sure that the more sensible (and less obsessed) person would stop in double figures!  :(

Pete, you should open your bat room up as a show room lol. I bet theres a better pick at your place, than there is at most shops.

surely as a noob i could put some sort of appeal on here with the sad music in the background
'Adam is struggling.......he only has a single digit amount of bats.......some people in his village are so poor that they have to carry only kasmir willow in old beaten up bags.......if you could find it in your hearts to donate amazing bats we could put a stop to this needless suffering......please find the time to join our appeal today and you will receive a welcome pack with a picture of your sponsored cricketer....lets put an end to this suffering......'
