Not sure if people's opinions are different but when would everyone put a protective face on their bats??? I have heard various times mentioned...after oiling, before knocking in...after both those...before both those....
Interested in people's thoughts??

Would suggest oil, leave to dry for a few weeks (not stood up and not in a warm room), then apply a face prior to knocking in.
That's my approach anyway

What we normally do is give the bat one coat of oil. Don't do two as then the Hammer Edge won't stick as well. Give the bat 24 hours to dry and then start knocking it in. A few days later, and just before the knocking in is finished, apply the sheet, and then do about 15 minutes more knocking in with the sheet applied. This way it makes the sheet stick a bit better, almost as if the sheet itself is knocked in! If you knock in the bat in one day, don't apply the sheet straight away, as the oil needs to have dried for 5-7 days ideally to minimise the risk of the sheet not sticking well. Hope this helps...

Mr millichamp advises applying one straight away. It keeps the moisture in the blade. Give the back/ toe and edges a couple of coats of oil, then knock in. If you oil the face you'll have to spend more time knocking in as it opens up the pressed fibres of the willow.

Going to slightly hi jack this thread to ask a related question...
Should you sand, then wax, then oil a bat? Is that the correct order? Or oil then wax..?
-
You should always sand/wax and maybe oil if needed. However you need to make sure you use a porous wax so the oil can seep through.
