Title: Oiling/Anti-scuff sheet
Post by: JimmyT85 on June 21, 2009, 03:08:32 PM
Hey everyone,

Is it okay to apply a coat of oil onto the cricket bat, letting it dry for 24+ hours, then applying an anti-scuff sheet onto it? Or would this damage the bat in any way, and make the anti-scuff not stick?

I've saw a video where the bat maker applies the anti-scuff sheet to the bat, and then only oils the back of the bat.

Which method is better?

Cheers

I'm not an expert so advice from others might will be better. The oil will prevent the anti-scuff sheet from sticking well or at all. I think the oil is just to prevent the bat from drying out but the anti-scuff sheet will do that too. Therefore the oil is unnecessary for the face with the sheet.

Simplified, the second method is better as the first won't really work.

The first wont work... I have been too impatient sometimes and tried to stick a sheet onto an oiled bat the next day. End result sheet wont stick and has reduced stickyness next time I try.

surely the 1st method will work - if you leave it for a couple of days?

there is no need to oil the face if your putting a cover on it:S

i oil the face and then leave for 3+ days and then apply an anti scuff, always works

Yes, I agree with Liam.

Gary (from Redback) oiled the bat for me and then applied an anti-scuff sheet to the face last season.  Before I use it this season, he just advised me to oil the back lightly.

I wouldnt use an un-oiled bat with or without an anti-scuff sheet.  Just my preference.

Guys sorry to drag up an old old topic but thought it was better than creating a new one! After receiving a new bat and a hammer edge off mike which i want to apply i need to decide whether to oil the bat, leave it and then apply or just apply! Looking for a definitive yes or no from any of the major bat people or knowledable people on here :)

cheers

just put it on with out any oil, then when face is on oil all over,if you put oil on you'll have to wait weeks for it to dry properly

For the face it is Anti Scuff OR Oil, not both.

I applied an anti-scuff to my ex-Ayrtek as soon as I got it, but having not oiled it, it became dry and brittle and snapped. :/

I personally always knock a bat in. Then oil it twice (leaving 24 hours in between coats), and knock it in for a final hour after the final oiling. Then I leave the bat for a couple of weeks before applying the scuff sheet and any edging, etc to ensure the oil is fully absorbed!
That's probably total and utter overkill?

you should awlays oil then knock in - the fibres can better enmesh this way.

On my talisman I knocked in then put the scuff on then oiled the exposed areas but that was on mikes advice as it's his bat lol

Well everyone will have their own way of doing it, but i would definitely reccomend oil first then knock in. I personally believe a drier bat is more prone to cracking than a bat that has been oiled first (when you are kncoking it in that is)

Everyone is different I personally just ask the person who supplied the bat and do what they say which changes with most bats
