Title: how do you know if you have over oiled your cricket bat

Any ideas?

I have a new M&H bat and have completed around 3-4 coats of oil to it and have now nearly completed knocking in! :D

but how do you know if you have OVER oiled it? are there any signs? and what could happen if you have?

the main one is very dark coulor of the blade
