Title: A couple of bats i've spliced/ handled/ shaped.
Post by: Ryan on February 06, 2013, 11:08:37 AM
Thought I'd post some pictures of a couple of bats I've been working on last sunday. Both are similar profiles with one having a higher middle.

Both bats will be 2.9oz dressed

Before splicing

Exactly, sorry guys  :D

I'm aiming to get most of them shaped this weekend (hopefully finished), as well as pick up more willow, finish my refurbs/ repairs as well as make a new sanding drum.

Busy week ahead.

Is it strange I spend more time looking at the tools on your bench than the bat? Everyone else always looks cleaner and more organised than me.

Nice looking bat by the way. I always find it amazing how when you finally grip the bat it makes the profile look different again somehow.

Cheers mate, only thing I don't or can't do is pressing...hopefully that will change in the next year or so. Need to make more space and save some cash first.

How long does the whole process of making one bay take you
Title: Re: A couple of bats i've spliced/ handled/ shaped.
Post by: Ryan on February 09, 2013, 07:43:30 PM
It all depends as I've got the splice them, fit the handles, leave the glue to set then come back to them and shape,  sand, finish and then sticker etc. But maybe 3/4 hours a bat. But I like to take my time and get them perfect.

Stickers and bat look quality. What weight was the finished bat?

And, more importantly, how big are the edges?  ;)

It ended up being 2.9.10oz so basically 2.10oz finished. I think the edges were 35mm and spine 55mm. It's quite thick at the toe and shoulders too.

Picks up lovely though.

received 2 bats from Ryan earlier in the week and very impressed with both. They need knocking in yet but they both feel great tapping up a ball and off the mallet.

I sent up my match bat for Ryan to make a copy of an the end result is very good. Couple of pics below of it.

going to get it knocked in and ease it into action towards the end of our indoor nets with any luck as we have 6 weeks left still.

That's a really useful visual indication. I favour a 2.9, but I've picked up a cheap 2.12 just to see what difference it makes - judging by this photo, quite a lot.

Looking back through the thread your work is amazing. What was your background, if you don't mind me asking.

Cheers.

I think seeing 2oz of willow shavings might be useful for people to understand what has to be removed from a bat to make something go from 2lbs 10 to 2lbs 8

this is a great help for people, I think

good idea buzz!

might be hard to do tho.. unless we get a box get the weight of it set it to 0 and then put the shavings in lol

Is that a laver copy looks like a laver toe Ryan

Or is it the camera angle and a whale fin toe

I guess as it hasn't been binded, gripped or stickered about 2.3-2.4 with a finished weight of 2.8-2.9

It's quite clear from the picture that its no binded, gripped,  stickered etc.

Binding/ gripping and stickers only add around 2/3oz depending on grip style.
