Title: Bats We all seem to have loads but how do you select the one
Post by: procricket on February 12, 2013, 04:37:56 PM
As most forumites have multiple bats it got me thinking how do you go about picking the one, thats if you do pick one i know some will chop and change.

My way is all about pickup it is help by a long belief that 90 per cent of all bats perform roughly the same or my skill level will make them so and very rarely do i have something that fits in the top 5 per cent and equally bottom 5 per cent.

So it is pick up and feel for me most bats that cross my path so far have had a middle.

So how do you select the one and how do you select the ones your going to buy  ie maker rep, never tried and so on....

Buying online takes away a lot of feel part so for someone like me i go through a lot of bats till I find something I like and end up sticking with that.

Not too concerned with the pick-up as long as bat does not feel light, I have learned after trying many bats that 2'11 bat thats slightly bottom heavy works very well for me anything below 2'10.5 seems too light and anything close to 2'12 becomes impractical. I think its a mental thing where if I pick up a bat and its feather light i never seem to get on with it, I like them to feel like there is good amount of wood in there wether its due to its size, weight or pick-up. RPC for example is 2'11 and feels 2'11, handle has become important as it needs to be a thickish semi-oval, i can get on with round handles too but thin is not acceptable for me. Don't know if it made any sense...

Pickup/Swing Weight and size. Very rarely bouncy ball but it can be a little misleading.

I've had bats that pickup wonderfully well and just don't have much of a middle. Likewise had bats that were basically too heavy and affected my game. It's pot luck at times, shop pickup always seem lighter than game pickup!. Best bat I had I didn't like the pickup, felt a little heavy but the wife decided it was the one. My god did it go and my game coped with a little bit of weight.

I myself have a net, Saturday and Sunday bat.

With regards to buying, recently I have bought bats for a variety of reasons.

Bought a Jester to try out LH and Black Cat - very impressed.

Bought a net bat because it was cheap but a bit heavier than what I usually go for and because of the profile.

Bought an SS because of the pickup and general feel of the bat, but this will be used by my Dad this season as he really likes it.

Bought my most recent and soon to be match bat (Blank Bat) because of the profile and price.

In the future I'm purely going to buy different brands/models which I want to try, not because of deals etc.

I'd look at the venue, where I'm batting, the weather, how 'Desperate Dan' do I feel.....and if I can get a cold beer in before I waft at thin air whilst pretending to bat.

At the moment I am looking at my new Aldred Supreme 'Bully bat', the H4L Hellfire (stickered as Excell), or the Ttttttempo.

Which one?

If it's wet I'll go with the Excell.
If it's bouncy, the Aldred.
Slow......oh this is too much!

It's about confidence. Nothing else, just confidence, oh and always a cold beer (our team runs of the stuff).

both I have three, they all weight the same. two have a similar middle position, one slightly lower.

I have a favourite and will usually, but not always choose that. I don't get too wound up by it, there are other things to worry about like where has the ball gone, why isn't it like a beach ball.
I am a bit of a "thumper" rather than wristy stroke player, so I just go with the bat I fancy.
I make the decision before i leave home as I don't want any doubt at the match.

I take my Laver match bat and my 20/20 bat to games. Only used the 20-20 bat once in a game last season as the game was over and I needed to give it a go. So in general I only use 1 bat as my main bat and stick with that for the season. Why I have 6-7 bats I've no idea as they don't get used but I kind of like the idea of having a few bats.

Yes 3 bats is enough but I have a 4oz difference between heaviest and lightest. More a case of specific bats for specific situations. I use the Tempo for netting and t20. T20 is a no brainer but I'm using it for netting as it's oz heavier than my icon and I want to improve my swing speed in matches. I've got the Ayrtek for low decks or batting up the order, because it's my lightest bat with a lower middle. Sat in the middle of all of them is my Icon+, big allrounder with a wonderful pickup for any situation. The Ayrtek/Icon have similar pickups, despite the 3oz difference and makes them pretty interchangeable as match bats.  I'll play the conditions and the situation, taking all my bats to the game. Not least because Redders will probably "borrow" one lol

I do not change my match bat for the conditions ever I feel no matter what I tend to hit the bat in the same area always slightly higher due to my dwarfishness.

I carry 6 bats fully capable all with a couple of ounce 2lb 6oz to 8oz with the odd one the new kg in at 2 11 which I know is not realy too heavy but I prefer lighter weights.

I'am defiantly a creature of habit with equipment once I get used to it not much else gets a look in 90 per cent of kit bought is tried then discarded.

I agree with rob I tend to stick to only one bat nowadays

Think he means knocking a bat up mate with a ball or mallett

I agree with nick I have bats that sing off a malett but in a game tend not to be as goodd

I only have the one, the reason for this is so Im used to it. I wouldn't mind an extra 3 though! Another reason is I don't really have the time to knock it in so I end up paying for a service even though you don't know if they're doing it properly!

I have one because I feel if I have more than one I'll become too fussy and create problems with a bat that it doesn't have just to choose another bat.

I've got a bat I like and trust it will do its job

I came across an old bat that I barely used and now having trusted in it and also preferring the weight of the willow get on very well with it.

I've taken every bat I think i might use to nets, and if they feel right, they feel right. I now have two that come with me to all matches that feel right. The others I am working with and one will be interesting to try post weight adjustment. But it's absolutely about how they feel when used against real bowling.

I try mine out at the nets. The 3-4 that feel the best in indoor nets I use in outdoor nets and then select 2 from the 3-4 shortlisted.

Use each of the bats in a couple of games and the one with which i get going and get my runs becomes my match bat.

You choose the bat that is scoring the most runs. Ha. I have 23 bats that have never seen a match and a dozen that have never faced a ball. If you fail twice with a bat move to the next one. If you keep scoring runs with one bat don't stop using it. I'm stuck on my second Mongoose at the moment and nothing else is getting a look in.
