Title: New Acquisition!
Post by: Johnny on July 07, 2009, 09:31:24 PM
This is my dad's old bat. He gave up playing around 10 years ago and passed it on to a mate, who has hardly used it since. I got him to retrieve it off him so he could pass it on to me! He must have used it for nearly 10 years himself, as I'm sure this particular model is from late 80's/early 90's.

Anyway, have already contacted Gray Nics who have agreed in principal to give it a full refurb, so to an extent these pics are here as the 'before' and I'll show you the 'after' when it's done.

I borrowed this bat for a short while in my late teens, as mine was away being repaired, and have to say, it was awesome, so once I get it back from Gray Nics it's playing career may well be resurrected!

That's exciting!!  One of these wound up at our club last year.  Didn't really suit me, but one of our middle order bats took to it like a fish to water and swore by it all season.  The owner of the bat then proceeded to just give the bat away to this guy bcos he was doing so well with it.

Hope it comes back a beaut and you score many runs with it!!  Cant wait to see the 'after' pics.

One of the older gents in the team I play in uses the exact same bat. Can't wait to see how the refurb turns out.

Just got off the phone with Gray Nics - after I sent them a bat they prepared a quote, (£30.76) so just called them to confirm they can go ahead and to make payment. They said I should expect it back in around 10 days

Does that include stickers - and if do which ones did you choose?

As per e-mail from Gray Nics:

"This includes sealing blade cracks, cleaning, re-labelling, new fitted Protec-toe, new fitted Extratec scuff sheet , new fitted grip, postage and VAT"

I didn't specify stickers to them - given the shape I'm not sure what they can do, so I said I was happy to leave it to their discretion.

ignite stickers with the 2 wavy bits on the back either side of the scoop would look good

i have seen someone have this done before and gray nicolls laminated a piece of wood in the "scoop" and then stickered it as a nitro is looked awsome u shud ask them to do that

you mean fill in the scoop? that just ruins the character of the bat, the whole point of it being a good bat is that it has a scoop

No way would I get rid of the scoop! this bat has sentimental value for me, and a bit of retro style. Ignite could look good - since the original graphics were green I thought Fusion stickers if they still have them, could look good, or otherwise, since this bat is kind of the great great grandfather of the Xiphos, then Xiphos stickers could be suitable

I'm pretty sure they have some retro stickers left - ask Talisman, or someone 'in' with Grays, but I'm sure I've seen one done in Oz with the proper stickers on.

They sold them all to Sports World, what a waste.....

I've ordered a new scoop from them, they said they might make one so waiting to hear if its on.

They did a great job!

A guy at my club uses one and says it pings. How does taking the scoop out, make it middle so well?!

how does taking the middle out make it go so well?

I've been thinking about the scoop shape compared to the modern bats with high spines. Wouldn't a scoop be like having two smaller middles spread across the blade, increasing the sweet spot size (but perhaps not power) like on a cavity back golf iron?

How does it compare power/pickup wise to other bats you've used?

I thinnk peremeter weighting is the idea of the concept. It picks up really well. Haven't used it in anger yet, so don't know on the power front, but it should be getting an outing soon.

I must put my one up, made by SAF industries without so much as a sniff of a licence agreement I might add.

Neither are on the respective gray nicolls websites? seems bizarre as I think they would be popular.

I used a GN Scoop 2000 in the 1994 season after Lara used it to score 375 in Antigua in the April.
It was a decent enough bat 2' 8 oz

I also used a GN 500 4 scoop in 1983 season as used by Gower in the late 70s and a GN Dynadrive in 1992 as used by Jimmy Adams

Although these bats were good, I don't believe they stack up to modern day bats IMHO

I don't think any bats from that kind of era do. I have to say, my scoop is sweet out of the middle, but I haven't hit any shots with it that just keep on going

Does anyone have any idea as to the quality of these bats? They might be worth a go.

I emailed GN and they have said they are 5 star quality range, so grade 2'ish.

I've always liked the scoops I also liked the Dynadrive which had narrow twin scoops :)

I am considering it, I've emailed Talisman to see if he could get hold of one, better someone who knows what a good bat looks like than a anonymous website (no offence to website cricket shops intended). It's just if you can't see the bat it becomes a bit of a lottery.

If I make the purchase I'll post some pics of what I get.

Lovely refurb i bet your dad is pleased? So are you going to let him give it a run out to see if it plays just as he remembers it!!?

His playing days are long gone, though he did pick it up and shadow a few shots

That's obviously a very wise decision. The Aussie one looks better I have to say
