An interesting pub question, so many choices from today to yesteryear... interested in your thoughts. Would Bradman rate high, or Benaud? Would Strauss, Vaughan or Hussain make it? My pick for my team would have to hold their position so that would rule out Brearley for a start. My top 3 picks would probably be: Mark Taylor @ 3, Clive Lloyd @ 2, Graeme Smith would be my number 1 skipper.

Me.
Failing that, Douglas Jardine.

I would write the same thing, except neither Mr Jardine or I would make the team.
on that basis it would be Warne or Viv.
I go for Viv because he is rock hard and no one would argue with him.

Jardine wouldn't have to be good enough.
He'd just instill his ethos on the team...
Failing that, I'd reckon George Headley would be a shoo-in.

Tough one - my all time fantasy test side would be something like:
Hutton
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Richards
Sobers
Khan
Gilchrist
Warne
Marshall
Trueman
Holding
So features several guys with relevant experience - of whom, I think I would take Khan. Aside from anything else, his ability to balance different interest groups would be key in a side full of egos...

Awesome suggestions I was thinking Jardine at one point... Warne would have been awesome and probably should have taken over after Waugh?? He would be capt of my txting cricket side

Steven Waugh

Waugh became captain at the time many thought Warne should have the job, though his predilection for belts off trousers down meant that the suits weren't ever going to choose him over squeaky clean SR Waugh (NSW). His time had gone when Waugh retired, especially after his drugs ban and thing.
Funny how it's easier to be the best captain that never was...

Steven Waugh
Same for me

Mark Taylor hands down. As good a player as Steve Waugh was, he was tactically inferior to Taylor and overly defensive.
-
Steve Waugh,Clive Llyod and I always liked Darren Lehmann as a captain.
I never liked Ricky Ponting as a captain, i think Australia was such a strong team when he was captain it made him look better than he was.
-
I think Michael Vaughan should be in with a shout.

Good picks interesting when you balance up the make ups of each capt's side they had during their reign, especially when you look at Waugh and Ponting, with the greats they had at the time, how much do the greats make the capt look better? Fleming had 28 wins and 27 loses but still rates highly.
I think you have to look at capts who brought in new innovations. Lloyd with a battery of four quicks to blast sides out in the mid 70s, which Richards later inherited.

Graeme Smith is fast becoming a great leader. Still has a few years left in him too!
