I am not sure what it says about the forum that there is no mention of the current games being played in there own thread - but after Ross Taylor's ton, Anderson's michelle today and Joe Root's batting, I felt it was worthy of a thread!!
1-2 in the 2020 series
1-1 currently in the ODI's with one to go
three tests
one question I have is who is going to make way for KP in the ODI batting line up come the summer :o!!
-
Hopefully Woakes and let Joe Root become a full on all rounder
Scratch that, hopefully Broad!
-
No one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
Harsh maybe but perhaps let Bell concentrate on test cricket only. That way England can resume the KP and Cook opening partnership. I like the bowling line up in this team and with Woakes at 7 plenty of batting.
-
this is the issue with squad rotation/resting periods. i guess out of the current side you couldnt really drop anyone. the bowling unit has its moments and the top 7 are doing ok. if the likes of joe root continue to take their chances then it would be a case of the man in possesion takes fav and the likes of KP has to battle to win his place back. competition for places is also good though.
-
Bells not good enough, drop him. Bring in KP for him in the ODI and bring in Root and Bairstow and sack off Bell completely.
-
Bell scores a world class ton every so often that just seems to keep him in the side that little longer
-
The beauty of a successful rotation policy is that the pool of players to pick from will all be pushing each other to perform. It looks a stroke of genius when the players step up but It can go the Australian way and have all sorts of issues. Too many players in good nick is far better than having 1 or 2.
-
Even though I like Bell he should step aside. His SR is just below Trotts and his average is below.
I know he has got better since opening, but I think if anyone it should be bell.
Bowling wise well Broad can go back to county cricket for a long while if it was upto me and woakes could do with some time aside to improve.

Bell looks so lovely technique wise that people just assume he's 'quality'. He's had the odd good score to keep his average respectable but overall he's not good enough. Kick him back to county cricket and then if he's in good form then you can always bring him back. Same with Broad. Woakes has had a couple of games now, give him a few more. If he doesn't improve then send him back to county cricket as well to improve.
Yes we have more of a pool than say Australia but I don't think our squad is as good as the Australia of old when you think of hte guys who couldn't get a game etc. Morgan needs to buck up his ideas as he's short of runs as well. Bresnan should be dropped totally now unless he proves in county cricket his 'pace' is back etc.
-
Its strange how people suddenly think Bell isnt good enough, when a year or 2 ago he was regarded as our best, most attractive batsmen
-
why has no one said drop Morgan?
-
Get rid of Bell - his stats are not that great and I reckon KP opening is a good option...
-

He's always looked the part and like the saying goes 'every dog has his day' but overall I've also always said he's not quite done it either. He's looked the part so been given more time than a more 'ugly' looking batsmen, plus as someone said earlier.. just as you think time has run out for him, he pulls out a career saving innings etc.
There just comes a point with a player that if they are not performing to the level you require then why not try someone else? Not that they will of course as Bell has been there for years and looks the part so people will always back someone that looks pretty over a collingwood type.
@Buzz - I did

Hales in for Bell, Kp in at 4 and root 5. Job done. See how that goes for a few series. Root looks like he could potentially take over from KP at 4. We just need to find a trott replacement as he's in his 30's.

Personally think Root is a better replacement for Trott and someone like Bairstow a replacement for KP

Could be.

Shows how good he is when I forgot he was even in the team

Morgan is world class lets not forget.

You've got a seriously strong pool of players if he can't get a game. He would walk into any one day side as a finisher.
-
Morgan has been poor for a while and should make way for KP. That top 4 looks particularly solid and that showed today considering how easy they made that chase look. Bell has flourished since taking the openers spot and it would be foolish to ditch him now. Still think there's a case for playing another all-rounder in place of Broad, who hasn't contributed with the bat for a long time and is struggling for consistency with the ball. I'm thinking Ricki Clarke / Ben Stokes or , god forbid, Ravi Bopara.
-
why has no one said drop Morgan?
When it's said it falls on deaf ears because of potential shown 4 years ago!!
Morgan has a good innings now and then, but when was his last good run of innings?
Drop Morgan for Root.
I'd like to see Hales tried at opening, if he performs better than Bell, then tell Bell to go improve/show he can still do it.
-

It all depends what you want from a player.
I would personally want a team of batsmen who would consistently push into the 40's so looking at a score of 250+ each time you play. Rather than batsmen who will get 80 then a duck.
Morgan is hit and miss. Dont get me wrong he can and has produced some great finishes, but he has also had a lot of low scores recently.

Cook(C)
Hales
KP
Root
Morgan
Buttler/Davies/Prior(W/K)
Swann
Patel/Woakes
Dernbach/Meaker/Broad
Finn
Anderson
I'm a big fan of Trott but with the likes of Hales, Root and Cook in the team you don't need another anchor imo. Plus in the shorter forms of the game a match can swing in one over and KP is more likely to produce that game changing over than Trott...
-
I do think that Hales deserves a go in ODI cricket. His form in T20 has been good since he came into the side and he obviously has a good temperament for International cricket so why not give him a go?
With Bell's S/R lower than Trott's I can't really see any reason why we need him in the side. He's not there to anchor the innings (I doubt he'll ever be able to bat through an innings in the manner of Trott) so what is his role?
-
Morgan is still that player like Mccullum showed today and KP that the opposition will fear. Those players can take games away from teams. Without Mccullums knock today it would've been a very one sided affair

He's quite stylish and has a good sneer.

:D
The Ian Bell sneer! There is no more amusing sight in cricket!
Never been a big fan of his. On his day he IS world class but those days seem to come around so rarely. Most of the time he looks like he is playing for himself and not the team.
-
I see the Bell bashers are back out in force again today. In the last 12 months since he has come back into the team Bell averages over 55 at a strike rate of 79 and you all want him dropped. In this period he averages 20 more than Cook and at a better strike rate. He averages 19 more than Warner and 15 more than Clarke at a slightly slower strike in the same period yet apparantly he is not worthy of a place in our side!
He also has similar stats to Collingwood over the course of his career, most people agree that Collingwood was a very good one day player.
-
Actually I like watching Bell. When he's in form he looks very classy.
-
watching the highlights now, bell isnt the problem, its Broad, if anyone is gonna be dropped he needs to be first to go
-
im with you cricketbadger
broad has no brains for a top class bowler
we dont need 7 batsmen either in the tests(broad aint scored any runs for ages anyway)
Onions has got to have killed Flower's pet cat or sommat.
England needs to
-
you say Bell bashers buit even Scyld Berry was recommending he be dropped over the weekend to allow Root and Bairstow time to bed in to the test game!

Doesn't mean he is right though! Here is a good riposte to that article.

Bell is a quality batsman. We have Cook, Trott, KP, Bell who are all quality and can play Test/ODI. Though I have my doubts about Trott in ODI's, I think 2 white balls came at the right time for him. Anyway, we have 4 quality batters and 6 spots in tests. Compton did ok but Root has stolen his thunder and Bairstow can bed in at 6 for tests. ODI's are a bit more of an issue as Morgan/Buttler have some credits in the bank. If Root could bowl 10 overs it would help, maybe Trott might be the one to make way and let KP prance around at 3.
-
Was listening to Nick Knight. I don't know how anyone could think about leaving Root out of the side right now - 75 average with a 90 plus strike rate.
It's horses for courses with the new format, Cook is the first name on the team sheet, then pick 2 out of the 3; Bell, Pietersen, Trott. Leave Root at 4 and Morgan, Butler at 5,6. Biggest question mark is Woakes bowling 10 overs. I feel for Bairstow, I think he should have had a crack before Butler but Butler done everything right to keep his spot so Bairstow will have to be patient.
-
with Trotts record he cant be dropped, he has done nothing wrong either
like was mentioned in commentary today he is the glue of the side, holds innings together and see's them through
albeit not as spectacular a finisher as a Morgan or Butler, but he has a way of making runs and its effective
-
Stat attack - Root is the first player in ODI history who's scored 30 plus in his first six innings. Make of that what you will. Don't think Stokes will be getting a sniff anytime soon, even if the undroppable Broad were to be left out. He's been sent home from the Lions tour for a second instance of unprofessional conduct...
-
Whoever they select I hope they get it right to avoid a thumping on the fourth day by my boys. Obviously Eng will win by an innings inside three days but its the golf on the fourth that will be the true test.
As an aside and to introduce myself, I live in Christchurch, New Zealand and have just rediscovered my passion for cricket after not playing the for the last 6 years. I'm planning on playing again next season hence how I stumbled across this site. Having given away all my gear when I retired I'm excited at the prospect of getting some new kit and thanks to all the effort you guys put in on this forum I'm sold on getting something custom made, even tempted to have a go myself at shaping a bat. The last stick I had was a GM Diamond Back that needed many a visit to the repairers but went like a rocket, if I think back to that shape and the shape of most modern bats, times have certainly change, for the better or not. That I'm not sure of as I'm yet to have a hit with these new monsters.
I look forward to adding a few comments here and there in the future and all the best for the upcoming tests (not that you will need it)

Welcome to the forum mate.
England have a nasty tendency to take their collective foot off the gas...
There's hope yet!

Don't write yourselves off too quickly.. Broad will be playing so it's just finn and anderson to worry about. Swann doesn't look quite as dangerous as few years ago.
-
Yep, Swann was useless in India... ;)
Swann will have a good trip as a specialist second slip if things go to plan.

He's not useless, I didn't say that. I just don't think he's quite as dangerous as he was a year or two ago. He's still a top spinner. I'd just worry more about Finn and Anderson currently personally.
-
I think New Zealand have a suprise or two in there ranks I'm expecting a decent series to be honest
-
I find it hard to have any confidence, we were all out for 45 four test innings ago, watching it my cuppa tea was still warm at the end of the innings. Our strengths are definitely in the shorter forms.
-
I think Brownlie, Williamson, Taylor are all the key men batting wise I just can't see your bowling being threatening at all. That's why you are very competitive in the shorter forms but in the longer forms where tight disciplined bowling is key you aren't quite there. Southee looks fit again so will be a threat but he is still an average test match bowler in my eyes.
-

Taylor is back and in form, as is McCullum. Williamson is a cracking prospect and not to be underestimated. Just need them three to do a lot of batting and the rest just work around them. Watling could be useful too.
-
McCullum is injured for the first Test. Williamson will look great getting to 27 then give it away.
Watling is flaky at best.
But then you never know...
-
Agree about Williamson, he has the technique and temperament suited to test cricket and will be a future test captain, the others while brilliant on occasions they get shown up against quality opposition as Philander and Styne showed. Still happy to be proved wrong.
Where did you here McCullum is injured?
-
Whoops. Misread an article - Guptill's out, isn't he?
apologies

The Kiwi's bowling attack has also really struggled to cope with the absence of Daniel Vettori (who has the added benefit of being a more than useful bat). Does anyone know anything about Bruce Martin, who seems set to play as the spinner ahead of Jeetan Patel?
-
He likes a beer
-
Bruce Martin has been around for a fair while, he is an attacking left armer and that's about all I know, might play the short stuff a touch better than Jeetan

Ha! Watching Jeetan against Steyn in the last series was just brilliant. Reminded me of some village circket I've been involved in.

Wow our 2nd Xl beat England.
Thats how we roll

Onions 1/213 from 38 overs for the match. Smashed

You missed a good opportunity there, I'd say he was peeled, diced and browned off ..

There are a few members of the England team with watery eyes this morning
-
oh dearie me, that was painful!
-
False hope I'm afraid
-
I meant the joke as opposed to the result!
-
Is Patel still making his way back from square leg?
Martin is 32 SLA, so it's not exactly looking to the future but has decent first class stats
-
Hmmm, fat SLA called Bruce, who likes a beer?
Sounds like a world-beater to me!
