Title: How to time the ball early and get under the ball
Post by: kouservice on March 08, 2013, 10:46:07 PM
Hi,

I want to improve my timing when I swing the bat. Most of the time when i punch the timing is perfect. I am happy with my back foot shots and defensive shots. But when I try to swing the bat and try to time the ball most of the time I mistime it. Also I have difficulty to get under the ball, so have less 6s in my scoresheet.

Can anyone suggest me drills to improve this weakness ?

Why do you need to swing hard? hitting sixes is more about timing then brute force. Balance and shape is also key, if you lose this (often happens as most players aren't strong enough to stay balanced with a hard swing), you may as well hand it to a fielder.

Don Boardman only hit 6 or 7 sixes in his test career.

I am 6ft athletic and good structure so no issue of power :). I understand , I am also not a fan of sixes, but i need to learn it in T20 era. Also the other reason is for a fast bowler if i try to swing the bat hard I mistime it a lot. But my punches work gr8.  So i am keen to improve this.

Further when I need to play lofted shots I have some problem due to this. Also one more thing to add , when i swing the bat and follow through the top end of the handle locks my wrists(top hand).

no one mentioned you lacked power. As someone said, it's not about 'power'. Power comes into it more if you just hit it rather than timing it etc. I can give it a biff if I want but the biggest hitter I've seen have been some really slight guys who don't gym it etc. Just naturally time the ball, which is what it's about.

Weight transfer and hips but agree with Phillip 6 are over rated

I agree. But thats what I want to learn and not only for hitting sixes but sometimes it is useful for forcing the other side to spread the fielding. How to do it any drills.

Aah. An old problem of mine. Just don't try and bludgeon it is all. At least initially. Fluidity is key. When we go really hard we seize up. It maybe the hips for some. Maybe the head for someone else. For me, its them wrists. Keep those wrists nice and loose. The extra effort can ruin the form also. It's ridiculous the number of times I've tried to whack it out of the park with all my might and it will drop in front of the boundary and dribble over. Equal number of times where a simple lofted straight drive(think extension of a punch with the bat ending up parallel to the ground) would sail way past the boundary. So, coming back to your question, hmmm, shadow practice till you internalize your swing and stay relaxed.

Keep lofting the ball straight over the bowler's head and it doesn't matter if you time it or not, unless, ofcourse, your trajectories are utter tosh ;).

As a former first class cricketer I used to play with said, sixes are mishit fours. Spreading the field doesn't require sixes, it requires boundaries. If you hit fours around the ground you will spread the field just as much as if you hit sixes.
