Title: Does an old bat need to be re knocked in?

My mate has just resumed playing cricket after a lengthy layoff and the last time his bat was used would have been 6+ years ago. It's an old school GM Maestro, it's probably going on 15-20 years old, has been repaired a number of times and has a scuff sheet on it.

I did have the pleasure of using it way back when and its a fantastic stick but will it still be ok to take straight out to the middle or will it require a bit of warming up first?

It wouldn't require anymore knocking in, but you need to be really careful of where it was stored. If its a naked bat (every time I think of a GM maestro, I think of em covered in white cotton!) then it will need re-oiling. If its got damp it will break, if its too dry it will break! Best to give a quick buff with some 400 grade sandpaper, re-oil it and then take it in the nets with some soft old balls and see how it feels.
