I'm always on the look out for new brands, developments etc. Apart from the horrid NB, AJK and Spartan to an extent are there any others people have seen?
-

Them bats are supposed to be the absolute nuts from what Nick's told me
-
any pics or a website ?
-
What about Owl cricket? I have seen them are on Twitter, they are also FaceBook and have a website. Te stickers are not the best IMO but they are new. Not heard any reviews. £220 for their 5* bat and they are based in Cheltenham according to their website.

Just seen on Twitter that HitsHard cricket bats won the cricketer mag boutique bat test, look very decent

A quick google suggest this is something related to Salix!
EDIT- and this picture pretty much confirms it for me

It does seem that hitshard cricket is an offshoot of salix - someone on twitter won one of their bats, posted a pic and it had arrived in a salix box that didn't look like it had been reused.

Hitshard.
One of the chaps at the forum net at Choice had one.

http://www.t-rapta.com/ (http://www.t-rapta.com/)
i believe T-Rapta will be launching at the beginning of april....website is partially up and a cricket store online and its just cricket review will be out at launch as well....their softs look good, bats are good as well, decals need a bit of work.
-
www.affinitycricket.co.uk (http://www.affinitycricket.co.uk) is a new brand, Hand making their own quality bats. i have one ( spectre ) low sweetspot and love it. #pingsoffthetoe

Not sure if everyone knows about http://www.whitewillowcricket.co.uk/ (http://www.whitewillowcricket.co.uk/) started by David Wall aka beachcricket . Some stunning bats and superb graphics !!.

The White Willow website is good, a touch slow, but looks really good.

Hi Guys
HitsHard is something I have been working on with Andrew at Salix on over the closed season. I didn't want to say anything or post bats etc as I would obviously want to take them to the market and sell to you lovely people. As you will all be aware at present HitsHard is not a forum sponsor. I have approached Admin in the past and the website should be finished soon.
HitsHard are indeed part of the Salix family. HitsHard offers amazing handmade bats in two grades, power and grade 1. There is just the stock shape at present and a single set of softs. In the near future I hope to bring the brand to the forum, but in the meantime please PM me of you want anymore info etc.
Thanks.

what is " Power " grade....im coming out with a lower grade bat and am looking for catchy names as well. can i also use " power "? i was going for grade X.....:)
OR is Power grade something else?
Decals do look nice....
-
Power range is the HitsHard grade 2. Just a different way of naming a bat grade was the thinking.
-
I lIke the sound of that !!
Hasn't Chris aka soulman got one of these?
-
Maybe a little late with the above statement haha
-
All smells fishy to me so hits hard is it a spin off of salix ??? Mmm did ajk come 2nd ??? Are sailx becomeing the new TK ?????
-
I would suggest that this other salix brand is possible a spin off for some of the lesser grade willow. There's only so much G1 willow to go around at the end of the day, with Salix (main brand) and AJK (his own named brand), getting the best of willow.

Having a subordinate brand for a different market is normal.
Brand segmentation is good practice.
It's about having clear lines of communication from the company to the public.

What's fishy about it? He's been more honest then most people about his bat maker, good luck to that man.

good luck and well done welcome to world of willow soulman enjoy all ur bats ;)

Nothing fishy mate at all. Only about 4% of the orders from Wrights are true grade 1. Do the maths and that leaves a lot of lower graded willow, will play just as well but may have some cosmetic marks. Salix grading is so strict they needed an outlet, hence HitsHard, you would be amazed at how strict Andrew is with the grading.
Anyway thanks for your first post, always a good way to introduce yourself.
For those that have asked I will post some pics. Asking as admin and sponsors are happy with this?
-
So the willow used will be the lower grade stuff cosmetically that wont be used for Salix own bats, what about the range of softs?
Is this going to be maybe lower grade stuff? or fairly similar to the salix range?
-

Not always no, some would be used for the grade one Six range and other clefts would be performance Salix range, soft are like the Arma range of Salix, it is perfectly good kit all through.
If it comes from Salix regardless of the brand it will be top end kit, still all hand made to the same standard as any Salix branded bat or soft item.
-
Good luck mate! Wish you all the best, salix gear is lovely so you'll be on to a winner.

How very true atleast they arent painting grains on the bats ;) or doing a bit of sanding calling them made in the UK...........
-
Only about 4% of the orders from Wrights are true grade 1.
Are you saying companies upgrade lower grade (lower as marked by JS Wrights) to Grade 1 themselves?
or that even marked as grade 1 by JS Wrights is not really Grade 1 ?
P.S. Good luck with this. You got a winner me thinks!
-
Wrights have, for the most part, never allowed buying in bulk of grade 1 alone. If you wanted x amount of g1, you had to buy 2, 3 & 4 as well. As a result, a g1 cricket bat is not necessarily created from a g1 cleft...

And does that mean they classify grade 3 from wrights as a grade 3 bat?

Good luck Soulman hopefully you have tons of success.

not at all wrights only grade the look of the rough sawn cleft, it can be a whole different story when you start getting into it !

Got my copy of the cricketer through..... 8.8 :) the best priced bat and beat a few others in the bat test............ great effort !
-

assumption being that wrights grade based only on looks - they always claim that its based on looks as well as something else.
Always leaving a few blanks in between.
-
And does that mean they classify grade 3 from wrights as a grade 3 bat?
that makes a lot of sense.
Explains a few brands that never seem to sell a grade 4 and only a few grade 3s every now and then! lol

Soulman - So Andrew (Salix) makes them for you or are you working for them?
Fast Eddie - I'm trying to work on the website speed. Lots of tweaking is needed but I'm waiting for an update to address the website formatting which may well help.
Thanks for the kind words Blazer and fasteddie

The website does look top notch when I can get it to work bud. Enjoying your toolmaking updates on twitter atm!

What part doesn't work? probably all of it given how much messing about I've done.

David just out of curiosity, what browser was the site designed for? Seems to work better in chrome but i think its the high quality pics on the main page that are slowing it down...you need a way to keep the pics of same quality but improve speed...
-
Safari and Chrome are the two browsers I use most. I'm going to scale down the images this afternoon as I suspected they were too dense, but this confirms it.
As I said in my email, I've got so much to tweak over the next few weeks.

Cool and no worries, Starting something is always busy but all this early work with pay off in the long run...

It doesn't work on my work computers as they are poocakes. However, I can get it to work on laptop/tablet/phone, albeit very slowly

HitsHard is Andrews company as it is a parent company of Salix. I do work there but only on part time basis and I work for free, I have been learning the art of bat making and I am very early in my career. I do some handle binding, polishing at present so starting at the bottom with the aim of working up as and when I have more time around my 9-5.
Anyway the bats are all made by Andrew, Ben, Hugh, the master craftsmen at Salix.
-
any news on their apprenticeship then Soulman?
-
So all the big brands go in the gear guide, which Salix win, and then all the smaller/mid sized brands go into the boutique brands test, which salix enter again under a brand that's not known to anyone bar a few?
Why do salix get to enter two competitions under different names and win both? Utter crap I think. It's take away the chance for a smaller brand to have the chance to win something like this. Surely whoever was testing this would have known what they are testing?
Think it's all a load of crap that Salix get both prizes, and I bet the bat sent to them wasn't some of this willow that doesn't get the thumbs up from Andrew for the salix sticks. I bet it was one of the blades he uses for the salix side of things.
What would stop the likes of GN putting the legend into it, or Newbury entering the cenkos? As there more of a 'boutique' option from a big brand.
(No offence intended Soulman or salix, just my views on this)
-
I agree. Would have liked to see more brands, rather than bats from similar/differently branded brands (if that makes sense)
-
We all know most of the guys who get there bats off that very well known bat maker, and I think we come to accept they make a cracking stick and there's a lot of these around, but he doesn't personally have a brand of his own so to speak.
I would have preferred to see the likes of a B3, choice, or a H4L, Aldred, vulcan something a long those lines that are truly something that is a boutique brand
-

No offence taken mate Everyone is entitled to there opinion.
I can promise you though that the bat sent in as the Hits Hard bat was a cleft selected from the outset as an HHS cleft. It was not some huge, light 50 grain super performance thing that you would get on the AJK for example.
At the end of the day mate, they won both because the judges judged both the Torque and HH as best in class. I would liken it so say brand X that may have there bats made, pressed and even shaped by say TK, they get the benefit not TK. Is that any different?
At the end of the day I would class Salix as a boutique brand, a bigger one mind but still boutique, they are not on the same page as say GN, GM, Slazenger etc in scale of mass production and market share, they offer fully handmade bats and I think more players are appreciating that over mass produced bats at present. Just my opinion though that last one.

I think where TK is different, is that he doesn't have his own brand as such mate.
Don't get me wrong, I don't see Salix in the same boat at all as GN and the likes. They make the bats in England and not Asia etc etc, but in my view, you can't have it both ways entering two things. You either want to contest with the big boys and go into a gear test with them, or you want to be seen more as a boutique brand, in which you enter the boutique brands contest/test. I think this will be a cracking debate and people will have views like both of ours.
-
From a business point of view your would put your new brand straight in at the deep end would want maximum exposure. Putting both brands in the test was from a business point of view a great idea and I'm sure we would all do the same.
Your right TK doesn't have 1 brand as such, he has about 15 in reality.
-

I agree with you on the TK point, as I guess would everyone, but it's not like TK has 15 different brand names that he uses him self?
But my point is, it shouldn't have been allowed to happen. A salix, is a HH and a HH is a salix. You can't enter both of the tests in my view, it should be one of the other no matter what the stickers. Salix have the AJK, which I can understand is Andrew's personal bespoke side of it, and obviously the Salix side of it speaks for itself. But apart from the HH side offering a lower grade bat at a better price, I can't see why it would be a different name, and personally don't think it's fair that Salix get to enter bat's into both of the tests
-
I'm unsure how this looks to be honest (from salix's pov).
For me this has completely downgraded Salix as an organisation(ajk/salix/hh), it's quite clever from a business POV to create these separate identities - however for them to be successful I believe they have to be completely separate.
Now every Salix I pick up, it will relate to a 'hitshard' bat that I may have seen which could be an ugly G3 for example. I do think it could be a successful model for them outside of the forum, as Salix/AJK will be using the best clefts for themselves, which means that you will not be getting any G2/G3 clefts in their range. These clefts will be used only for the HH side of things, which I'm guessing will be more affordable and also have a 'louder' feel to the brand.
However, on the forum we are a minority that are quite knowledgeable about the industry with who makes bats for who etc - I feel this has completely downgraded Salix for myself and I'm sure that I'm not alone in that. I did see Salix as the best out of the retail brands, personally - but I feel this has cheapened the feel of their identity.
-
Thanks Soulman, I thought it was that as I'd spoken to Andrew and he'd mentioned he was doing something like this with someone. Good Luck with it, it's an interesting idea. If it means more Hand Made bats then I'm happy.
-

Hi mate just a few things, as I said earlier every company that buys from wrights, only has a small % of true grade 1. This is the same for all companies that will buy in bulk from Wrights, others may and are able to hide the ugly grade 3 as you say behind big stickers etc, Salix still sell there grade 3/4 bats as the select option and that will still be the case. HitsHard is not some brand to take of Salix's rubbish! An ugly looking grade 3 will often still play very well if pressed, crafted in the best way to get the best from that piece of willow!
Every one is entitled to there opinion, but HH is there to provide a handmade option to the market place. It supports players by offering another price point for a truly handmade bat, it supports the industry by allowing a UK batmaker to showcase a dying art and all is done in the Uk including the stickers and grips. Finally HH allows people like myself to learn under the supervision of a true master craftsman and get an insight into the industry etc.
Anyway I will take your opinion on board and thanks for your comments.
-
so sailx only use grade 1s for there bats ???? and hits hard are going to sell 2s and 3s?????

I have to agree with the comments about Mr Kember putting bats in both categories... I don't have anything against Salix, in fact, I love Salix. I just don't feel it is very fair that they could put in a 'sister' brand in the other category... Won't stop me from buying a HitsHard bat if I wanted one, but I echo Tom's thoughts that another brand like Aldred or Vulcan would have been a better boutique brand to win it...

i dont think my point came across clearly, i meant that if he didnt enter a bat he cant win.............. i dont blame anyone for entering a brand at the end of the day i wouldnt buy a bat on what a writer says id have to play or atleast see a bat in person before considering it

He said your crap Buzz :) Oh and old :) It's ok though, I'm sure he plays County Cricket or above? Maybe plays for 'district under 10's' or something. (ps Yogi, most of us on here pay to play cricket which generally means we are a distinct level of crapness!)

I am not sure there is, Yogi made a factually correct statement about me (is 35 old these days?)
i cant wait to see someone come out to bat with one of these....... surely it will be too easy for the "did you also bring your toys today?"
I still don't understand this post though
Why would someone using a new balance bat be more open to abuse than any other batter using an overpriced bat? And why the reference to other toys?
I am not all that great with direct sledging, I prefer other ways to harass batsman, like discussing their technique at length to the keeper from slip or actually not interacting with the batsman at all frequently works too...

Stop trying to deflect away from the issue Buzz. You are clearly garbage and past it. Time to give it up mate and move onto something less taxing on the old ankles.
Perhaps a food critic, or management consultant?
Bloody keyboard warriors talking utter nonsense...

I am not sure there is, Yogi made a factually correct statement about me (is 35 old these days?)

Not saying a word to me puts me off. Discussing me or sledging just annoys me into playing better I've found. I don't actively listen or anything though it just seems to be that when a team sledges/discusses I play better.. WHen they literally ignore the fact batsmen are even there I tend to lose focus. Weird but true.
35 is not old.. It's just nearly old :).. Now when you are 36, that's old.

my avatar is Ralph Fiennes who, according to Trypewriter's wife, I look like... :o
