Decent little article on Cricinfo today discussing the fact we may be struggling for quicks after the Ashes, and the future in general, compared to the likes of the Aussies.

Not the biggest fan of Boycott but he's rarely wrong and think he brings up a good point here.

Forgetting about Tremlett (when fit). Hardly think the cupboard is bare when you have a fit Anderson, Finn, Broad, Tremlett and Bres for 3 bowling spots. Might be an issue at this moment as Tremlett, Bres are recovering for injuries but Onions will do a job in England. Brooks and Meaker possibly have another season to mature.
I think it's just a slow news day at cricinfo.
-
Let's not forget about James Harris and the lad from Essex as well....I think we're pretty well off for quicks looking into the future plus, in the next couple of years a couple are bound to appear seemingly from out of nowhere....there is supposedly another seriously sharp lad at Surrey...can't remember his name though?
Just looked it up....Matt Dunn.

Still not convinced about Meaker, obviously he has wheels - but he's way too expensive, especially in the one day stuff - and he's not as young as you think. He really needs to come on this season for me.
-
Meaker is a typical pacy young bowler. When he's having a good day, he's unplayable, but when he's bad, he's very expensive. Haven't seen much of Dunn but he is seriously sharp by all accounts.

don't need to be express to be a good bowler. Toby Roland Jones at Middx is a good prospect, as is Harris,

Agree, Mills and Dunn spray it and go for plenty.

I don't think the cupboard is bare by any means; after all, whilst Anderson will probably only have threyears or so left in him, Broad is only in his mid 290s and Finn is younger than that. Bresnan, Onions and Tremlett may not be long term options but they will all by around for at least a couple more years yet and - this is the point that Boycott's answer misses, though I suspect he is aware of it himself - a lot can happen in that time. As far as I can tell, Harris, Woakes and Roland-Jones are all though to be potentially good enough, and all have the time to put on the couple of mph they probably need to function at the top level, whilst there are plenty of young bowlers in the Shires who could make the necessary leap forward - Mills and Dunn have already been mentioned and I would add to that Moin Ashraf, who is raw but has wheels and swings it both ways, the better of the Overton lads at Somerset and two lads who have moved counties and might use that as a chance to kick on - Chris Jordan and Olly Hannon-Dalby.
-
Hannon Dalby is absolute pants I have to say
But agree with everything else
-
I would hope that England (ECB) haven't been stupid enough to not concentrate on bring through the next few generations. Hopefully they are already eyeing up the guys in their early to mid teens that are prospects etc etc
Otherwise we might find we suddenly have no one coming through like the aussies now etc. same with batsmen!
-
He was pants last year, I'll grant you that. But he is not perma-pants - he has the ability to get close to 90mph and a frame at 6'7" that will make the most of those clicks - he just needs some better coaching than he has had at Yorkshire because it pains me greatly to say that we missed the boat with him - noone making their FC debut at 18 should be quicker then than they are five years later!
-
The ECB might want to spend some time developing an attacking spinner.
-
Reece Topley is supposed to be pretty decent. Think one of the earlier posts reffered to him as lad from Essex. Seems we do have a few options to me.
-
What about that other young guy at Somerset, Gregory? Apparently he's an opening bat by trade but bowls 90+mph - surely he's worth looking at.

Topley or Mills, both promising

Faced HD last year in a cup game reduced to a 20/20 game . If a pants cricketer Like myself can see him out and milk a few boundaries (in crap light) it tells its own story really.
I will add though he is so bloody tall the ball came over the screen down the hill ha ha not rapid by any means but the bounce and seam was lively.
-
thats the thing - he WAS rapid (I remember chatting to Ramps after said not entirely (No Swearing Please) batsman with 100+ first class tons was OHD's maiden wicket and he was very impressed with eh speed that Oli got on the ball).
-
Meaker really needs to start bowling a bit more efficiently if he's got any chance of progressing for England.
Against a good batting side in Somerset, his current figures are;
SC Meaker 21.4 - 4 - 111 - 1 @5.12/over
-
Dernbach the standout for surrey at the minute... (How often has that been said?!)
-
not often, thats for sure!

Long term I think he will be A future england captain, but at the moment he's still very raw. He will bat at 4, and bowl first change I reckon when at the top of his game!

Not a bad bowling set up for Middx at the moment - Finn, Murtagh, Roland-Jones and Harris - with Berg and Dexter as the all-rounders and Collymore creaking away on the sidelines.
Desperate for a spinner though!

Apart from Swann, there don't seem to be any spinner's that would be capable of holding down a spot in the current England set up.
