Has anyone tried the five finger running shoes? tempted to buy a pair but interested in anyone who has tried them and what they think.
thanks
Danny

honestly they are superb i have two pairs, what type of running do you do ?
-
i do a variety of running, mainly road of upto 10-12 miles, but do some off road trail style and do use a treadmill at work. what kind of running do you use them for? would they be suitable for cross training in the gym?
-
i have done a fair amount of trail running in mine and have a pair i use for the treadmill / crosstrainer they are really comfortable. my one word of advice would be to not buy the cheap ones...... if you plan to use them seriously (10-12 miles is serious in my book!) then buy the real ones. start off with a 3k run rest a few days then 5k and build back up to your distance. if you run straight off 10 miles you wont walk for a week! just goes to show how slack i was when running in my asics i suppose !
-
Doesn't show you were slack in your asics, just that you weren't forefoot landing...

Agreed. I am looking into getting a pair this summer too.
Only advice I have from my trainers is to start off real slow - if you doing 5 miles earlier - do 2/3 days in a week for a mile.
Jag.

i was planning on getting the real vibrams sprint ones, wouldn't get a cheap imitation for running shoes. what made me think about getting a pair was forgetting my trainers for work one day and jumped on the treadmill in my socks, found it fine so thought might try barefoot properly. i am a forefoot runner naturally so hopefully it shouldn't be a massive shock in changing my running style.

When I ran as a soldier, we where always taught that we needed professionally fitted proper running shoes.
We used to spend £80 per pair and get through 3 pairs per year!
Is it now the case that you can run in bare-foots without the risk of shock injury?
I have a pair of barefoots which I wear around the house and at the gym for the spinning bike. I wouldn't run in them.
Am I a dinosaur?

Eddie - The barefoot shoes do little more than force the human body to utilise different muscles and stress different ligaments/tendons. As for impact, the human body has a remarkable ability to adapt, however this takes time so as suggested above I wouldn't advise going long distance early in these. Take your time and build up your distances, give your body time to rest and adapt.
Out of interest were you told to buy the 'correct' shoes for your running motion? As this (along with sports drinks) is the biggest marketing gimmick in the leisure industry. Studies have shown no difference in injury rates between runners using neutral shoes and those using 'fitted' shoes

Thanks for the insight.
There was a group of 4 of us who all went to a specialist running shop and all came away with shoes which worked for our 'gait' and style. Spent a fair few £'s as well!

i got my vibrams today, will give them a go in work later and post how they are. For shoes that are basically just lycra and a thin rubber sole they aren't cheap though. i remember seeing the program that was on TV a little while ago about sports drink and the marketing gimmick that they are.

tried the vibrams out for the first time in work on the treadmill lastnight, bit of a strange feeling when i first had them on and started running but once got into my stride i can honestly say they felt great. didn't notice at all that there was no cushioning or support. ran for about 25 mins at a steady pace and felt light on my feet and ran as quick as i have done previously in my asics. all in all very impressed and looking forward to getting out on roads a trails for more running now.
