Title: Injuries YOU caused
Post by: Kez on April 09, 2013, 11:23:14 AM
Having come back from uni for Easter I attended club indoor nets for the first time this season and well I don't think the 2nd team captain or 2nd team opening bowler are too happy with me.

Said opening bowler digs one in and liking the short ball I go after it unfortunately I time the absolute pants off it and it travels like a tracer bullet back at him and split open his head!

Wondering if i am the only one to take out a team mate at nets? batter/ bowler or even fielders.

Note: all is well only a few stiches.

When i was younger and quicker, I bounced someone in nets, hit them on the back of the head as they tried to avoid it and knocked them out. Huge lump and concussion...

In a match I bounced someone and hit them squarely in the nose, hence loud crack, cascades of blood and trip to hospital.

Have felled a couple of batsmen over the years, always felt like (No Swearing Please) afterwards...but then if I felt that bad guess I wouldn't bowl bumpers! Split open a guy fielding at silly mid on batting once too that was nasty...

Hit a length ball over the bowler, didn't get all of it and he stuck a hand up, caught his finger, snapped it back and bone came through the skin. Wasn't nice to look at to say the least.

If I had got hold of it, it probably would've missed his hand.

Wasn't me personally but this happened in our nets last year.

I was stood up keeping so had full view and was quite horrific. Batsman smashed a half volley to mid on where the said player wasn't looking, he turned just as the ball got to him and well here are the results

I have put a link direct to my photobucket and not uploaded the picture direct and it isn't nice to look at! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

4 internal and 8 external stitches I think it was

the batsmen in the other net was bending down to get the ball out of the net and I timed the pants off a drive and knocked him out.

Creamed one back at a bowler and broke his hand

Whilst at Uni, the batsman in one net played a full blooded pull and missed the ball. He didn't miss the head of the batsman in the next door net who was bending over to retrieve the ball... Straight out, cracked his skull.

This is all whilst bowling - I've broke a rib
A nose and helmet both with bouncers
And ive give people some really nasty bruises on toes and feet with yorkers. I'm not allowed to bowl at
                                   3rd teamers anymore.

Broken toes as a bowler is just something that happens to batsmen... Done that a few times.

Few years back when i had an arm, i proceeded to sling one back to the keeper from deep square, but managed to clock the umpire at square leg on the bonce. He took it like a champ although his legs were wobbley like Bruno's against Witherspoon.

When playing under 15's I split someone's forehead open in training, they bowled and I timed my lofted drive perfectly. Instead of going over the bowlers head it hit him, a lot if blood and 14 stitches later he stopped playing. My mate still has he scar so I still feel guilty to this day  :(

Got a ball to bounce up of a length on a dodgy pitch and smash the batsman square in the grill, no damage done. Opening over of a T20 game on tour one year, I pinned a guy on the fingers, he then preceded to hit me for two 4's before retiring hurt to go to hospital.

My mate has a toe which is black and deformed from a Yorker I bowled
7 years ago.

Same guy I bowled a Beamer, he backed away but the ball swung, hit him square on the inside of his shoulder blade. Was beautiful.

I  played a cut shot and hit the keepers helmet last season, his fault for putting his head in the way  . Also hit the bowler a few times no major injuries but one concussion. My bowling couldn't injure a 5 year old so no danger there.

A month or so ago I came down the track and smacked it straight, a guy walking back poked his hand and he ended up getting a fracture on one of his finger.

I've hit a a few batters when I used to bowl, some nice bruises but nothing serious.

But batting... A laddo fielding at silly mid off wished he wasnt when the bowler bowled a half volley on my legs. Head split open instantly and blood flinged off the seam of the ball as it spun round.

We still ran a 3 while the other fielders were stood round him, was going to go for the 4th but decided to make sure he was ok...

About 5 years ago my mrs came to watch and was having a nice picnic with a couple of friends at the long off boundary. Pleasingly the bowler gave me a half volley which I duly despatched..... straight at my mrs! Luckily she was watching and saw the ball en route to her lovely picnic. To my horror she decided she was going to be helpful by collecting the ball when it arrived..... unfortunately she did not take the effect of the boundary rope into consideration. You can guess what happened next, hit the rope then jumped and said hello to her forehead. Incidentally there was more damage done when I burst out laughing upon seeing the seam mark later that day and referred to her as 'Potter' for the rest of the evening.

I gave my Dad 6 stiches once in the nets. It was at Hook school during the U13 girls county cricket tournament (which he was coach of one of the teams and mys siter played in so we went down as a family). After dinner we went for a net in the outdoor grass nets, the end one for support had a pole at "midwicket" . ive middled one off my legs "through mid wicket" which deflected off the net straight into my dads head. There was blood everywhere, he ended up being carted off to hospital and spent all night there being patched up. He had a massive bruise and cut - i've never felt so guilty in all my life.

I've broke a bowlers finger when hitting a straight drive back at him - serves him right for stopping a 4  :D

As the majority of you have done the broken bowlers fingers line, ill add when i was a wee 17 year old fielding at fine leg, launched the ball in from the boundary, our man at first slip wasnt paying attention, ball straight onto the top of his head, nice spurt of claret

2 years ago during my maiden ton i hit a ball over towards cow-corner (obviously) and the pavillion where an outfielder tried to take the catch. Little did he know that I had hit it rather well and as he running under it he did not notice his proximity to the raised concrete veranda in front of the pavillion. here he ran straight into the ledge and snapped a bone in his big toe clean in half. all whilst clattering into some garden furniture, i kept a leg as a memento.

The guy was a trooper though, carried on the game batting and bowling.

In the days when I could wield a 3 lb bat, I 'retired' a square leg umpire when he took a pull shot full on the shin bone. To his credit he saw the over out, but then limped off to his car and drove away...

Hope it was an automatic...

In our Grand Final this year, I creamed a sweep shot straight into the helmet of the guy in short. There was a lot of blood and he ended up with 6 stitches. The series of pictures below captures it all:

About 20 years ago a went to put a slow beamer out the ground & ended up scooping round 180 degrees and the ball smashing the wicket keeper in the face. Blood everywhere and broken cheekbone.
Glad to say I still see the fella now and again in the local :-[

I managed to get a top batsman to top edge pull one of my dibbly dobbly mediums into his face (im a keeper).  Blood everywhere which stained the net mat.

Everyone used to joke to new players that I was rapid, point out the blood and there would be a big build up as I charged in to bowl my first ball at them.  50mph later we all had a good giggle...  :-[

i've hit a few bowlers and umpires with straight drives, but think the worst injury i've inflicted was on myself. playing on a day where there had been a little drizzle so the outfield was just a little slick i charged round the boundary and dived to save a four, i didn't realize quite how steep the bank the other side of the rope was and how thick the brambles were down there. as i flew down the greasy bank in my tangle of arms and legs i managed to tread on my hand putting my spikes through the skin, then ending up fully entangled in brambles and finally in trying to scramble still moving back up the bank stood on my other leg and opened up about an inch long gash that would eventually require 4 stitches. i didn't manage to stop the ball either to add insult to injury plus the mocking i received from the rest of my team.

In juniors, I was bowling my good old top spinner on a concrete deck, it bounced so much that it knocked the kids cap off and his cap hit the wickets!

also my twin bowls around 120 and when i was 12 i lifted my head it went under my helmet and the seam gave me a nice seam grave down the left of my face, oh those good old county helmets, quality protection ;)
