Pretty obvious from the picture!

I'll keep this thread updated but I'm hoping to complete my own press for less than £300 within a couple of months.
Progress will be updated as I go along but I don't have too much time to devote at the minute so it will be slow and steady.

Chicken soup for lunch?

Stratigically placed product......
What it called

Deliverance?

This looks interesting , don't think anyones done this before and actually shown us their progress so keep us updated :)!

No... But now you mention it!

Ha, never realised, I've called them Defier, I've also Challenger and Contender, but I'm just playing at the minute.

Well, I always see people buying pre-pressed clefts and as an engineer I thought, why can't I make a press? It's just a roller with pressure applied. The only reason they cost so much is they are so niche, so pretty much everyone is a one-off.
When I've finished I don't mind people copying the idea.
-
How many hours in work time are you actually expecting it to take? Also , being someone who doesn't have much of a clue about this , how do you make sure the right amount of pressure is being put on the cleft (probably a really simple answer that I don't get :().
-
I'd imagine it's a lot of trial and error - a lot of cheap willow will get wasted during the process of getting the pressing right, but thats half the fun!
I say good luck to you master banksy, if i had the time I would be doing exactly what you are attempting to do - no point spending £1000+ on a machine that some one is getting rid of when you can make your own and truly understand it's design and function.
Im presuming from the 'chicken soup can' it's going to be a relatively flat faced press, or are you hoping to shape that into a slight camber?
Also, nice looking stone work bench!
-
If I had all the tools and materials infront of me I reckon it would probably take me 3 days, so 30 hours ish.
I'll be using a floorstanding hydraulic workshop press to apply the pressure so it's just by eye, or I could fit a pressure guage.
We'll see how things go in coming weeks anyway.
-
That one that beachcricket had for sale was very basic and I imagine it would take less than a day to make if you were handy with a welding kit.
Looking forward to this thread and wish you well.
-
Be interesting to see how it goes, as I've got a friend who's doing his masters in engineering that is going to help me build one at some point in the future.

Can't beat good ol' Yorkshire Stone ;) Although I think I'm getting kicked out of the cellar soon and moving up into the garage.
There will be alot of trail and error... but at least you can keep applying a bit more, have a tap, apply a bit more... etc. And see how it progresses.
I'm not sure on what to do with the roller yet, I might try and shape it a little on the lathe, but not much. A new lenght is cheap enough anyway if I want another.

awsome!!!
will be watching this thread love anything like this bit of enginering :D
-
Good luck mate, i may have to pop round and have a look/ place an order :D
-
Good Luck! Looking forward to the developments on this thread!
-
Excellent!! :)...hope to see as many pics and steps as possible...good luck, may the force be with you :)
-
Interesting, good luck
-
Any more on this?
-
Funnily enough I've just gathered some bits this weekend I need to make start and will be updating tonight hopefully.

Top man

How's this coming on?
-
Hi mate, any update on the press?
-
I'm just really struggling for time at the minute. The only spare time I get is on weekends, and that's when I play cricket! Was contemplating taking a drawing and the metal to an engineering shop, but I want to do it myself. Might have to wait until the season's finished unfortunately...
-
Just wondering if there was any more updates on this :D?
-
Abandoned...
I've fell out of love with it all.

How far did you get in the end before abandoning?
-
Awwww , that's unfortunate , looked like it was building up to a very interesting project :(.

!!! You got stuck making some part or the design doesn't work?
I do a little engineering as a hobby, it can be great fun........... or a real pain when something goes wrong >:(

That's a shame, would love to have seen a home made press.
Is it a hard concept to put together? Presumably it's got to be well built to withstand the force, but how difficult can it be - Only saying as my father in law is an engineering buff, and I'd secretly love to make one ;-)
-
I've just fallen out with it all, bat making as well, I've abandoned that too. The press never got very far, I got the roller put together and bought a workshop press, but never sorted the drive mechanism. I just don't seem to get any spare time these days and when I do, I've got other priorities I'm afraid.
You never know, I might finish this one off in the distant future.

Have you got any photos or drawings of it?
-
Just out of curiosity, is it possible to buy a cricket bat press anywhere?

I'll get some photo's soon to show how far I got, could possibly do a write up on how I planned to make it to help others out?

Would be very grateful :-)

Agree , that would be a very interesting post in my view , and could inspire a few people on here ;).
-
Anything more on that write up with pictures Banksy :D?
-
He was going to try and get it finished last time I spoke. I'd love to see some pictures myself, get the camera out mate!!
-
Great news, fingers crossed for success.
